I am so glad that I found this post. I have been on singular and symbicort for about 5 or 6 months now and have gained approximately 10-15 pounds. I asked my doctor about it and he said that it was just "being eighteen." I have been really upset about this weightgain because I have been 115-118 pounds for almost 5 years, I am now almost 130. I know this isn't heavy but I am becoming self-concious about my weight. It is all in my lower abdomen and a little bit in my back. My life stye hasnt changed and the only difference is this medication. could it be the steriods in the symbicort? or could it be the harmonal changes from the singular? I just wonder if it is water weight or actual fat.........
Singulair is a terrible medication and unfortunately I've just learned this after being on it for 6 years. Over the past 6 years I've gained weight steadily and I'm now overweight. I recently decided to go off of it because my anxiety has been terrible and I finally realized that I had my first panic attack after I started this medication. So it kind of just hit me that maybe it was because of this medication seeing as how I'd never had a panic attack before. The bonus is that I weighed myself and lost 4 pounds in one week. Coincidence? I don't think so. I've been trying to lose weight for years now. I've eaten healthy, exercised and the most I've seemed to lose is maybe a pound or two. So after I stopped Singular for a week I've lost 4 pounds. I totally believe that I've gained so much weight because of this medication. I would never recommend this medication to anyone!
This is amazing. I have been taking Singulair daily for 4 years. I've gone from weighing 130 lbs to 187 lbs, and I'm only 5'3". I couldn't understand why I was gaining so much weight each year, even though I was exercising regularly. I thought I may have fibroids, since I had gained so much weight in my mid-section, but after I got tested, we found that wasn't the problem. I continued to gain weight. I then thought it was the birth control pills, so I stopped taking them, but I continued to gain weight. I then went to get tested to make sure my thyroid was ok. Sure enough, it was ok, but I still continued to gain weight. I continued to go to the doctor, but we couldn't not figure it out. My doctor never suggested it could be a side effect from Singulair. Finally, I started searching the website, and found there are so many people, who are experiencing the same problem. It's not listed anywhere as a possible side effect. When I started having the numbness in my arm and reached 187 lbs., I knew something had to be done. I stopped taking Singulair immeditely, just to see if that could possibly be the reason for the constant weight gain. It's the best health decision I have made in a very long time!
I am SO glad to see this 6 pages of responses to this horrible drug and the very REAL side effect of weight gain before I started to take it. I just had the same very very BAD experience with Seroquel I took for seizures for 10 yrs; SAME thing a 130 pound weight gain!! I still have 100 pounds to loose the last thing I need is a repeat of this with singular and sadly the medical "profession" has nothing but steroids to treat asthma in any way - it is cruel. There are steroids in the inhalers and the oral prednisone is pure dangerous steroid is also in the injections they give you in asthma crises are also just as bad. I am a retired RN and I am appalled at the terrible drugs I see on the market being given to people as guina pigs and then being lied to by the Dr's who lie for the Pharmaceutical Companies who give big fat checks to the Doctors! I am embarrassed to be a part of such a crooked profession and have even had doctors tell me to LIE to patients about things that went on in their surgery.

I came here to hear some opinions and views also about gaining weight after taking singular, and this past year has been the only year that ive stayed up-to-date on my singular, and ive gained 10-15 lbs, i even started working out after realizing this and have had trouble losing anything! i think im pretty much done with singular at this point. natural remedies all the way***
Wow, I have been battling with my weight especially around my stomach even though I am excercising more than ever and have cut down my food intake. I am also on Singulair and Seritide (which is cortizone based).
Has anyone come off these meds and lost weight?

Agree...I gained about 12 pounds since I have been on Singulair in my abdoment. I work out regularly, eat a low fat diet with small portions, and still cannot lose a pound. I have lots of bloating as well. I will stop taking it and will deal with the possible consequences of an attack.
Janek1,
I could have written your post word for word! I just went to my doctor thinking I had an ovarian cyst as well. I have been on singulair for a few months & have gained weight which will not come off no matter how much I exercise. Very interesting!

I was so happy to have this and some other forums posting the same problems that I've been living with for nearly 3 years now. Saw my asthma specialist yesterday, showed him printouts and research I'd done on the Internet -- and he agreed to me going off of Singulair with his blessings to see if this is the culprit of my weight gain. One of the rare few in the medical profession who actually believes me with this weight gain issue and who has been trying to help me with it. From my research, I've seen that it can take anywhere from 2 to 6 months to really see weight loss after getting off Singulair, so I'm eager to see what happens with me. I'll post again when I've got news. It's so amazing to see just how many people out there have these symptoms -- which may all be linked to this one medication. Good luck to everyone!!!
Everyone has different reactions, it can make you gain weight. I'm glad you don't have this reaction, but not everyones body is the same. I have PCOS so I've been under close watch with my doctors for what i eat and have to log everything in a data base online, plus excersise regularly. Nothing changed eating or excersise wise when I went on Singulair and I still gained 30lbs. I've had every test performed to see what the cause was. Such as thyroid tests done twice and blood drawn to see what all was in my system (it's pretty hard to fake a blood test).
Thank Goodness! That is all I can say. I work out 3-4 times per week, stick to 1200-1500 calories, no pop, no candy, no fast food, and have maintained within 2 lbs, the same weight for the last 2 years. Then suddenly I gained almost 8 lbs in less than 2 months. I started getting more and more bloated til I looked almost 3-4 months pregnant! I've always had a flat stomach so this was very upsetting. I noticed my back and sides getting thicker and thighs as well. I started singulair last fall, but only took it for a few weeks...looking at beach pics from vacations during that time I noticed my stomach was bloated as well which I contributed to drinking a few adult drinks :) Now I really do wonder... This spring I started it again when my allergies kicked in again and have been going crazy wondering why I was gaining so much weight. I don't know why I decided to google Singulair and weight gain but I am so very glad I did. I stopped taking it yesterday and today I have already noticed a decrease in the bloating and a dip on the scales. I hope to see this continue. I worked very hard a few years ago to lose 40 lbs and keep it off. I'm not going to let a stupid pill put me back in that position!
CreativeSoul- You posted 3 weeks ago, any promising weight loss results from discontinuing the Singulair? I stumbled across this forum today as I googled Singulair side effects (i've had most of them and have been tolerating them for over 6 years). I'm done with Singulair.
My son is 8 1/2 years old. He has been on Singulair for almost 2 years. He weighs 102 lbs but is very active. I try and monitor what he eats and feed all of my 4 children healthy meals with fruits and vegeatbales. They drink lots of water and limited juices or sport drinks. My son is the only one on this medicine and his weight gain over the past 2 years has really been excessive. Just today did I google this topic. I am starting to think this medicine has contributed to the weight gain and will stop giving him this medicine immediately! Although his allergies are seasonal and can be severe, I will continue to use natural products like saline spray to help clear him up somewhat. Ironically, my oldest daughter now 12 also had bad allergies but at that time my pediatrician who retired a few years ago did not believe in giving children any of these medications. He said see if she grows out of it and she did. I started a new doctor who suggested he go on Singulair. As a parent, you want to trust and believe in the people who care for your children. I am curious to see if the weight subsides after I stop the medicine.
YA KNOW.... Blame it on the person not the medication. Always the same c**p. My 11 year old daughter is actually eating less but gaining excessive weight that she doesn't need to gain. If it is the medication, it is the medication. She didn't gain the weight without it. She is actually eating healthier and trying to stay in shape.
My 8 year old has been on Singulair 5mg daily since last August. He was always super skinny and reasonably active. Since being on this medication, he has gained huge amounts of weight quickly without changing his appetite habits too much. I have been looking at everything lifestyle-wise to see what may have caused such a drastic change in his appearance. The other day started thinking about when Singulair was started and was about the same time. Even checked through photos to support this. Glad to have found some info to support this.
