It happens to me when i habe used some kinda of blushes and cleaners. I think they do damage and out is a reaction to that. I habe stated going for more non toxic cleaners and it does help. Although in the winter when the hat comes on it is worse.
I think I've narrowed it down when I eat dinner types of bread...either to the wheat or gluten or something...since I can get a glimpse of it sometime...just when I eat something and sometimes getting constriction right above my belly...I'm inclined to think it's a digestive issue...when I'm on a strict diet of no breads, sugar and dairy...and now I think carbonation...this is very difficult though. The smell goes away...I would like someone to try done of these things and try to link a connection..but I know it's real..

I am so sorry to be so happy that I'm NOT the only one with the smelling exhaust problem. It's horrible and makes me feel so sick to my stomach. Sometimes it's so strong I can't stand it. I haven't spoke with my Dr. about it yet but have been dealing with it on and off for about 4 months now. My husband thinks I'm crazy and doesn't smell anything. My body doesn't produce B-12 so I get monthly injections. Never noticed if it was worse when I was late getting my injections....hmmm I will have to take notes.
It will come and go. I am vit. D deficient and wonder if that is linked to why I smell it. I smell it big time in the hospitals and any big building. One day I smelt it so bad in the car that was running and hot out. We were next to a big restaurant. I don't know why and it drives me crazy. Trying to figure it out! Good luck , you are so not alone!
I think I have found that it relates to digestive issues, either leaky gut or candida and I've been following those diets pretty well and have not smelled it lately on a continuous basis. I feel that possibly bread because it contains either yeast, (which I am allergic to) or wheat (or the gluten), which I was not allergic to wheat, but nevertheless, I seemed to track it when I consumed the high carbs. Nevertheless, staying away from them made the difference and haven't been brave enough yet to try bread again yet. It takes about 4-6 hours to come on and then 24-48 to go away. But I think my gut is getting stronger and have been using things like l-glutamine, probiotics and staying away from dairy to heal. I do feel and hope that I will be able to consume whatever soon and not have to worry about this as before.
Do you have some article to point to for that. We have had a little mold issue in our home and I suppose that's possible but would like a little more information. But the fact that I had this when I was away from home for several days makes me think that it is more diet related.
I suffer from seasonal allergies. I live in southeastern US. Every year, when I start smelling that exhaust fume smell, I know it's time to start taking my zertec daily.
For me, it is a symptom of my seasonal allergies. For me, my worst allergy is to grass pollen, I can't say for certain which causes the smell...

Yesterday it was the smell of cigarette smoke...today it is car exhaust. Both are horrible.
Me too 10 years back for a couple years then it went away now it is back with other health issues
I had it when I had mold poisoning!
I had the same strong, horrible exhaust smell for months. ENT did head CT to check for polyps. None. Then he told me to take B12, B2, and B6. He also said it was most likely from acid reflux. Told me to take Prilosec at BEDTIME. Cleared it up immediately!! Hope this helps someone else!
I had it a little while ago and went away after a few hours.. It has comeback again worse. I woke up with the car fume smell first thing this a.m. It has been like that all day... My nostrils are even burning. Slight headache Ache is. At the temples. It is really bothering me.....
I have had the exhaust smell for several days now. I am supposed to take a B12 supplement, but I have been off of it for a while...hopefully getting back on that regime will make this annoying smell stop!
I also thought it was just me. Wow I've been asking co workers why does it smell like exhaust fumes, but it can we ate up in a wind turbine. I also take multi vitamins. I'm wondering if this has something to do with it.
