i have the problem every two months or so. I noticed it w/ alcohol when i have a big binge. my left upper eyelid everytime. i can usually feel it before it happens. i noticed it happens when i get really bad sleep sometimes too, like nights where i take a sleeping pill and dont really rest very well. i havent found anyting to help it go away or any explanation. i wonder about sinus perforation draining into my eye that only happens when i get a slight sinus headache due to drinking, that is my best explanaiton so far....frustrating.

I'm glad I am not the only one with this. Feels like a small piece of gravel under the eyelid, either eye, no ryhme or reason. Sometimes with wine, sometimes with beer, but so far not with whiskey. Eye drops of any kind, painful. I have also noticed some major sinus drainage on the affected side. Hot steamy shower tends to help a little. Usually goes away after a day, but have had it turn into a chalazion lasting several days. Otherwise healthy athletic, mid 40's male with good diet.

Make the weird eye thing stop!!!! Good luck to all with this.

Cheers!

Hi,
I had a flu type virus and towards the end of it when I woke up in the morning my eyelids seemed to be glued together. When I had sorted that out they were still crusty. This went on well after the virus had gone. As it was over xmas with much celebrateing my husband suggested that it could be down to the booze. I laughed but having gone back to my normal intake it does seem a lot better. Still have to bathe my eyes occasionally, but I think he might be right (isn't he always >:( ). Still will go to the doc's if it doesn't go completely.
Good Luck

I have pollen and nuts allergy, dry eye (has many forms, took 3 yrs. to diagnose). My eyes become irritated after a sip of alcohol (along with other things). Have tried vitamins (rutin, bioflavonoids, lutein), artificial tears .. no avail. I also have antihistamine pills and (o)patanol eye-drops, which help against the irritation, but worsen the dry-eye situation.
I suspect something in my previous allergy medications to trigger this carrousel.

It's called Nocturnal lagophthalamos - googld it -- alcohol is the culprit.

So I'm not alone. I'm a relatively heavy drinker. ( 4-6 beers a night and usually some red wine). Been drinking like this for 20 years. Never had this problem until the last twelve months or so. Not all the time, but is getting more regular. I've had the swelling in my lip, cheek, forehead?! And upper eyelid. Never any pain or irritation involved, but embarrising at work!

It should stop in about a 2 week or so. Please get to some AA Meetings they will help and you can talk to people going through the same thing. Good luck! Take it one day at a time.

I have the exact same problem. After drinking my eyes (mainly my right eye) becomes puffy and irritated and remains that way for 1-3 days. I have taken patenol and it irritates it even more. I dont know what to do and want to be able to enjoy drinks moderately, but this side effect is terrible.

I wonder if when you sleep on your side after drinking the upper most eye stays open (perhaps muscles are more relaxed through drink). Hence it only affects one eye.

(Bye the way I have just looked up Nocturnal lagophthalamos which was mentioned above and it says the problem is one eye not closing fully and it sounds to me as if this is the problem)

I will try a small piece of tape or an eye mask with a bit of extra padding on the bad eye.

Alcohol causes the tiny blood vessels on the surface of the eye, called the sclera, to become dilated and inflamed, resulting in bloodshot eyes. Heavy drinking depletes the body of the nutrients needed for eye health and consequently can lead to a condition known as alcoholic optic neuritis. This can impair eyesight and, in time, lead to blindness.

That's interesting. I'm now on antibioticsfor life and have recently been suffering from sore eyes after drinking. Any info on the change of diet? What do you consume to replace the depleted good bacteria?

Hi, think I may be able to help.

I had an eye condition for a long time not just after drinking, sounds like what a lot of you are describing. I happened to be going to the opticians for something else, but as soon as I walked in and she looked at me, she said "I know why you are here". Its called Blepharitis, which is caused by something called seborrhoeic dermatitis.

I know some of you have mentioned getting dandruff, or it being made worse by alcohol. And dandruff can be caused by.... seborrhoeic dermatitis!
