I am also experiencing this pain in my fingers. I cannot make a fist and the pain is particularly acute in the morning. (I also require heat to make them feel better... though the heat doesn't help with the swelling!) My fingers are so stiff that I've been dropping things. The other day I dropped a large glass bottle of olives and 2 minutes later, dropped a bag of nuts on the floor. I can't seem to grasp anything. My midwives have also assured me that I'll recover the use of my hands after I deliver. Can't wait for that!

Well this kind of many different changes you have to face during pregnancy period. so don't worry a lot. Just enjoy your pregnancy and be happy. Taking care of yourself during your pregnancy is of utmost importance. Your gynaecologist will give you general guidelines, but don't expect to be spoonfed. Here's what you need to know and do on your own.

This happened to me 2 weeks before I delievered my daughter. I just woke up with it and could barely open my hand. I was told the same thing, water retention. However my daughter is now 2 and I'm still having problems. :-( I have been to 3 other dr.s and no one can tell me what is the problem.

I too have this issue at almost 8 months pregnant. Luckily I only have this during the middle of the night. I found that taking off all of my rings before bed helps a lot, and not drinking too many fluids within an hour or even two before bed. My doctor did not recommend any water retention pills, but suggested instead a single tylenol before sleep and reduce my fluid intake before bed. Also, inclreas your fluid intake during the day. Be sure that the swelling that you all are experiencing during the day is not related to preecampsia, which is a pregnancy related condition and can be very serious. Definitely talk to your OB if you havn' alreay.

I started experiencing all the above symptoms around week 35. And yes, it's worse during the night and when I wake up. I was also told that people who have thyroid problems (which I have) have a tendency of developing these symptoms.

wow! I entered sore fingers pregnancy into the search toolbar and got this website. Thank God i found my answer and now i know that this is normal. I too did not want to call my OB about sore fingers but you all have relly helped me to understand what is going on. Its been going on for almost 3 days and i'll be 33 weeks tomorrow and im starting to notice the swelling in my feet but the fingers I could not understand. Should I soak them in hot water or something, OMG this is weird because it feels like i've been cracking my knuckles or that I have arthritis, ughhhhh!

i realsie that most of the posts are REALLY old but i thought just in case some one like me stumbles across this, there is something u can do to reduce swelling, which should ease the joint pain, it sounds backwards but drinking LOADS of water through out the day will prevent water retention, also sleeping with your arms as straight as possible will reduce carpel tunnel syndrom, which probably contributes to the stiff morning hands.
good luck every one! i hope all the symptons will/have dissapeared after the birth :-)

I am soo glad that this is what it is! I was getting so worried that it was arthritis as i have been a knuckle clicker since i was young. I am 32 weeks pregnant but have had this awful pain in my joints in my hands since about 29 weeks pregnant.. Especially when i wake up in the morniings! Its soo sore to open and lose my hands.. Lets hope its gone soon :-)

Thank God it's not just me.. I have searched the web for information on this and the best I could come up with was Carpel Tunnel Sydrome which I know it is not because they are not numb nor tingly.

As above, I'm waking up during the night and in the morning and can't move my fingers, and if I do manage to make a fist my middle finger in particular is sticking, or clicking into a frozen position and I'll have to acually correct it with my other hand.. So weird..

I asked my own GP about it and she seemed stumped which freaked me out, she said we couldn't rule out Arthritis *eeek* but I'm happy now to have found these comments :-) yay

I am 38 weeks pregnant and for the last 2 weeks I have finally started to get the swollen feet and ankles- then about a week ago my hands started to do it as well- and my hands are the ones that get sore.

What I have found to alleviate it:
immediately find a way to cool off. Sort of easy for me, here in SE Alaska during the winter, BUT if I'm at a family dinner or at work and am not able to step outside I literally fill my 32 oz. water bottle with ice then water, AND fill a glass with the same and finish both as quickly as possible.
Baby will squirm to adjust and move away from the suddenly cool stomach, but oh! Mama feels BETTER!!!

I think that when I get swollen it's a definite sign that I'm dehydrated, and I think that the swelling is due to the inability to move fluids through the body as well.

As for the swollen/sore/stiff hands- that happens if and when I fall asleep with the blanket covering them. Again, I think it's due to overheating/dehydration.

To help with that, I have kept the room at basically the temp of a meat locker. I do my best to keep my hands and feet uncovered as I fall asleep. If I happen to wake up and have eventually covered up my hands and have the soreness- I spend a few minutes running them under cold water and then resume the day with another bottle of ice water.

Good luck, ladies!!!

Wow...i'm so glad to hear that you all have this issue! Well, that sounded bad but you know what i mean! I've asked EVERYONE i know (including my doctors!) and no one seemed to have any answer better than "it's just a pregnancy symptom." I'm a full-time professional musician and i play guitar for a living (still working at 38 weeks along!) and it's getting almost impossible to play at this point! My back, feet, other joints and energy are all totally fine so up 'til this point i've had NO problems continuing to work on stage every night (other than having to let out my guitar strap a lot and holding my guitar to the side since my arm can't reach around the front anymore!). I do have some trouble singing the way i used to because of the diminished lung capacity but i guess my body is telling me to let up, finally! Oh well... to get some rest would be nice! But i guess no Xbox 360 since i can't move my darn fingers! :-( (i'm 35 with a baby on the way so this is probably a good time to grow up and forgo the video gaming anyway!) Best of luck to you all, Ladies! I know you can't wait to meet your little ones!

I can't bend my fingers in the morning. RHeu. Arthitis runs in my family so I was scared. Glad I am not the only one. I am 40 and in my 36 week

So glad I'm not the only one suffering from this. The pain is sometimes unbearable...at times I can't grip things such as bottles or jars to open them up. RA runs in my family as well, so of course this is a big concern for me as well. Thanks everyone for sharing!

I too have this. Since about my 8th month of the pregnancy, my fingers got stiff at night. I am now 2 mos. postpartum and I am still living with this misery. Also, my feet joints hurt and its hard to walk, worse in the mornings. My fingers start to go stiff if I lie down or even when sitting for a bit. The doctors don't seem to know what it is except that its a pregnancy thing. Well, I am not pregnant anymore, please leave!!

I had a series of tests last week for RA, thyroid etc. I am waiting on the results. Upon researching the topic, I find that a lot of women developed these strange symptoms postpartum, but it looks like a lot of us got it while pregnant.

I am breastfeeding and a part of me is hoping that it will go away once I stop and lose the extra 15 pounds my body is holding onto. I have had no improvement with the passing of time. I have read on the web (postings) that it could be caused by deficiencies in things such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, Vit D and Vit C. I have also heard that apple cider vinegar can help (2 Tablespoons a day). I am trying them all. I will post if I notice a diference.

Please post to this if you have found any cure to this hand stiffness. Are all of us (postpartum) breastfeeding? Maybe this is a common cause?

Thanks! Eileen
