I, too have chronic sphenoid sinusitis. This was confirmed with a CT scan. To answer your question, yes I have a weird popping in my neck right under base of skull. Sounds like tissue paper crinkling. Doesn't hurt...just annoying. I am getting scheduled for surgery soon and hopefully this will take care of it.

I have similar symptoms. Is there anyway we can compare notes. I have a lot of creaking and cracking in my neck. I just had sinus surgery but not on the sphenoid.

Yes Erica,
I'm now connecting my sphenoid sinus problems with toxic mold in my house. There is a book by Julie Rehmeyer called Through the Shadowlands. Please read.

I have suffered chronic sinus issues for over 30 years now, with a tendency towards head pain indicative of Sphenoid sinus issues. I have had two operations to straighten my septum, one to remove nasal polyps and two balloon sinuplasty. None of these solved the issue.

My symptoms are -
nasal congestion, especially left side
constant nasal drip and over production of mucous, alternating with..
Dry nostrils with crusting
head pains- generally around the crown, but also intermittently above and round the eyes
dry,itchy eyes
flushed cheeks
Congestion and head pain worsens in artificially heated or cooled conditions- I need to sleep with a window open year round
Lethargy,mind fog, difficulty concentrating

I manage the condition with 2 salt rinses per nostril per day, morning and night and around 1 hour of inhalation of steam containing olbas oil- if I miss a session, morning or night, congestion and pain increases- When I die, Olbas Oil shares will fall in value by half!

Following my last operation, when the ENT consultant more or less wrote me off, I consulted a homeopathic doctor. She believed my symptoms were caused by inflammation linked to allergies and began treating that. Though I wasn't cured, my symptoms were under control for a couple of years (i.e only 20 mins of steam inhalation per day!). Then around 2 months ago, my symptoms worsened again and I'm back to square one. I finished a course of amoxycillin to rule out a new infection a month ago and am back to see a new ENT consultant next week.

I'm doubtful he'll be able to cure me unfortunately. I've learned to live with the condition though it does have a profound effect on my life- I'm basically addicted to olbas oil and steam, and live with congestion and pain every day.

Sinusitis is seen by most people as an extension of a cold, but unfortunately, it can become an extremely chronic condition. I've read the posts on the topic here and it seems many people suffer, though not many for as long as me!

I would say not to give up and trial and error can help you learn what best manages your personal condition. I'd certainly try steam inhalation. Good luck !

Hi- I have used J&Jbaby shampoo twice and now have no sense of smell. you list statistics about how many people have the symptoms and how many people recover. I have searched but not found anything. Do you have a source I could look at? thanks.

I had the exact symptoms which lasted for over 6 years. Not kidding. Went to ear nose and throat and they dismissed the ringing in left ear as tinitus on the onset. What happened was that got rear ended and had sever e whiplash. Two months later, ringing in left ear. Forward to December 2916,ringing double spiked in left ear. Was unable to sleep, comcentrate, light headed, and some dizziness. Went back to nose ear an throat, again they said nothing they could do. Old age. So I decided to research. I was in military, fllybhelos, didn’t make sense. In the summer of 2016,I got a rash, in chest. Went to emergency room and they couldn’t figure out cause. They gave me predisone. Took 2 pills and rash disappeared. Had 3 left over. (20mg each. Read that it’s good for tinitus. So I decided to take the 3 pills (1 every day) along with nettinpotti, nasal spray, and fluticasone daily spray and hot shower with steam daily. My sinus completely opened up. They drained along the left ear. Apparently I had severe sinusitis or rhinitis. I didn’t even know I had it. This drain8ng went on for 4 months. Additionally, back to symptoms, I had a severe crouching over problem. All of this dissapeared with drawing. It was scary. I went to 4 different doctor, (Brigham’s and woman’s, mass general, my doctor and ent. No one could figure out problem. They thought I was nuts. Even had a scan. Nothing showed. My sinus completely cleared. Ringing went down to a minimal and is still going down now. Very faint. I have lost all confidence in doctors. Needles to say, I feel great now. Still do netti potti, 2 Times a week, use nasal spray, and steam showers, maybe due to whiplash, my Eustachian tubes were blocked and build up accured. I mentioned to a friend and he mentioned calcification. Maybe that was it who knows. I hope this helps people out there. Best of luck .

I have had headaches for close to a year, been to the doctor three times with burning in the sinus area, very top of my head hurts, left side of face, jaw area sometimes and even teeth hurt sometimes, then it will run to the back of my head and neck and almost feel like my scalp hurts. No runny nose or classic sinus infection symptoms. Been told to take claratin, its just allergies... Most recent doc thought left side of sinus area was inflamed and wants me to take flonase spray every day and claritin allergy med and possible decongestant. No mention of Sphenoid issue so am going to bring it up at next visit as I have every single symptom and am sick of feeling horrible. Anyone advice?

I had sphenoid surgery 2/2017, and it does affect the neck as you have described, my sinus was 3/4 blocked right side. Found on CT. Your description is spot on for what I have had. Hard to recover, but spinal meningitis can develop if you have it and don’t get surgery!

A number of years ago this started happening to me (worsening neck pain with impact of feet) along with tinnitus as a result of an MVA. I was diagnosed with Cervical Dystonia. This is very debilitating as it is difficult to achieve a reasonable level of fitness or involvement in activities without pain. Dystonia is basically a constant spasming in the structures surrounding the cervical spine area impacting muscles nerves etc...See a neurologist to rule this out.

Maybe it helps anyone...
4 weeks ago I started having imbalance, head pressure (feeling like there was a knot or blockage inside my head that was about to explode), weird electrical "brain waves" spreading in my head while turning head, extreme fatigue, random nasal discharge (but otherwise my nasal passages were clear, just a bit dry and swollen), painful and full ears, extremely painful and weak neck (feeling that my head is too heavy and my neck cant carry it any more), cracking neck vertebra, tremor in the neck while turning my heavy head...
I got extremely anxious, because I couldnt figure out what it was - a middle or inner ear infection? some neurological disease (the tremor was the scariest symptom besides brain waves)? As I had had a slight imbalance to begin with from my recent diving accident, my first thought was "Gosh, the balance got worse again because of the accident".
So my symptoms were overlapped and masked.

Will see an ENT next week for my diving accident follow-up and will tell him all this mess as well.

Finally googling I understood that the most probably cause is a sphenoid sinus infection (I probably have household mold and I have stopped sleeping in the room with suspected mold problem).

I started neti pot and Im massaging like crazy the acupressure points for sinusitis/nasal congestion ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** posting of web addresses is not allowed*** Please read our Terms of Use and drinking lots of herbal tea. Im a big fan of acupressure and it really helps!!!! I feel relieved that it is a sinus infection, not a brain disease. Feeling already better...

I’ve had these exact symptoms for 3-4 weeks and don’t know that a year of this would be easy to say the least. Can u tell me if you got better??

I had thes problems for 7 years. It was awful. I saw neurologists, acupuncturists, allergists and more. 800mg of ibupophen was the only thing that helped, but it was temporary. I finally found a solution in the most unlikely place. I cut out sugar and wheat and it slowly went away. I guess a gut flora issue was causing sinus and brain inflammation. Anyway - good luck all.
