Hello guys, I have the same symptoms with OP except for 'clicking' sound when swallowing and the pain does not get worse with movement. However, I do get some sort of ligament/joint grating sound in my neck when I turn my head to the right in certain angles (doesn't hurt). I do have additional symptoms such as pain in left side of my teeth and mild throbbing pain in the lower middle teeth area. The pain will radiate to nearby areas such as the cheek and around the temple and eye. Sometimes the symptoms will shift to the other side like a mirror image, but they usually stay on the left side. Recently, I also get dull left arm pain without weakness. I have seen an ENT and did an endoscopy of the ear, nose and throat. They were fine and the doctor later diagnosed me with TMJ because I do grind my teeth at night. However, I am kinda not convinced because I had previously done a physio/chiro therapy targeting the TMJ joint and it was not effective at all. I believe that TMJ problem is not capable of causing deep aching spot in the neck ( correct me if im wrong) plus sometimes the pain in the neck is far greater than the pain in my teeth.
I have had this problem for about 4 months now, my life is totally ruined. I am only 19, I cant focus on my study because of this. By the way, I noticed that the left side of my neck seems to pulsate stronger than the right. And I think I might have some sort of GERD problem since I occasionally get some bitter/sour acid in my mouth but without heartburn. I am planning to get a scan of my head or neck. Please offer me some guidance or suggestion, I am really miserable right now. Thanks in advance!

So, I've been experiencing for the last few days most of what folks have been describing here. I had just had a chiro treatment -- i've got really bad lumbar discs, though I also have incipient degeneration and bone spurs in my cervical spine. Anyway...I went to the gym after, and I was mixing bench press with bent-over dumbbell rows for the back. It was doing the latter. I think that I first felt the pain in neck and behind my jaw. I've felt it before, so I didn't worry much...but it got progressively more painful. It was hard even to find a comfortable position in bed. I've felt this pain before, but never so intensely or for so long -- over 72 hours now.
The pain was localized in two areas -- one behind my jaw (sort of below my mouth, and also just to the left of and in front of my throat bones. While most of the pain is when I press on it, there is some pain in the back left also when I swallow. Because the pain is most intense as I press on the side off my Adam's apple area, I wondered if it's related to the bone spurs, but it somehow feels muscular, too, The pain really kicked in when I tried doing some crunch-like exercises on the floor for my back. I have also been a long-time GERD suffer -- well, either GERD or laryngopharyngeal reflux. It might be a combination, or more the latter as sometimes it feels that food gets stuck along the way. That actually happened yesterday to me -- and that can be pretty scary.
So. I'm wondering if this is one thing -- hyoid bone diagnosis sounds interesting -- or whether it might also be a confluence of things, perhaps one triggering another. Someone mentioned Eustachian tube dysfunction. I will say that using my pinky to open up my ear canal a little and let water drain out did give me some relief. Because of the way it feels muscular in nature, I have also tried stretching and massage, which does rigger it more. However, after doing the ear thing, I also tried doing some crunches as I was pressure-massaging the muscles in my throat, pushing them down toward my clavicle. That gave me a lot of relief, which validates what someone else posted above about myofascial release trigger point therapy. I still have the pain -- it feels like a lump behind the jaw, an a dryness/difficulty swallowing. pushing on the the spot behind the jaw seems to exacerbate the feeling inside my throat, which persists even though I think the massage relieved the sensation of something pressing on my throat.
It's Xmas Eve, so I don't think I'll be getting medical help for this for a few days at least, but I'll be interested to see if I can relieve this in some way -- maybe the stretching-massage and maybe an antacid (along with a little attention to my ear). I really think that the pains are a combination of things going on, and I'm going to have to calm down each of them. There may be a better long-term fix, like removing some cartilage, but before I talk to someone about that, I'm going to see if can calm things myself.

This sounds like a condition called "Eagle Syndrome". Google "Eagle Syndrome" to learn more. Most doctors don't know about this. You would need imaging to verity.

you might tell your doctor that i told you i have the same symptoms as a part of my autoimmune problem. I have rhematoid arthritis, but also as a complication i have muscle pain all over. it actually rotates to different parts every few weeks, and recently went into the throat.
i used a camera to look deep in my throat and it is fine, gargling salt water also confirms ghe tissues in my thoat are fine, despite that i feel like i have a deep sore throat.
i take daily prednisone and dissease modifying drugs to prevent joint damage, and the steroids make it better fast! but i try to take as little prednisone as possible.
i am in no way qualified to give medical advice, so please talk to a doctor trust.
it sounds like everyone had mild pain and your doctors have done you right in not treating it.
sadly the drugs that will help are dangerous a d cause long term harm.
those that have been gastroscoped and scanned just be glad nothing showed.
others , make sure a thourough evaluation is done by a good set of doctors
