Just to comment on the lymph system....it is a very important and not a well known secret that in cleansing the lymph system a person should be jumping up and down during the day. Purchasing a small trampoline for the home is well worth it as the system is cleansed given this action..ten min. a day should benefit the body greatly!

I had the exact symptoms. Sore spot to the left of my throat, not in my throat, that feels deeper than just just below the skin. Mostly hurt only if I pushed on the area. This has been going on for 3-4 days. This morning I woke up and my left ear felt clogged like I had fluid in it. Shortly after I realized that the sore spot was MUCH better! There is some connection between my ear and the spot.

I occasionally have this kind of pain in my neck. It's usually on the right front side, between the trachea and neck muscle, fairly deep, no lumps but tender. Ibuprofen helps with soreness, which points to inflamed tissue. It's far enough above the thyroid area that I've ruled that out as a cause. One commonality I've noticed in this thread is "stress", which I too was under a lot of before this came about (again). I'm thinking possibly a herpes-type viral infection coming on because of the lack of sleep and stress. That might explain the re-occurrence over time. If true, antibiotics wont help, but I'm trying to stress down and get lots of sleep.

i have this same problem its hurting right now. what i do is i have to lay off the coffee which causes stress rather you believe it or not. and I take a water pill from the gnc to release the salt and bring my blood pressure down. for some reason this stops the pain in my neck and jaw. i lay off milk too. and dont sleep with your pill all balled up and uncomfortable. but if i had to do one thing to stop it it i would be lay off the coffee. next i would check my blood pressure.

I had the exact symptoms and in my case it was stress as well. I went to chiropractor and this helped immensely with pain relief. Will try some of these other suggestions now - like cutting back on coffee.

I have had this very same internal  irritation and pain specifically on the right side of my throat. It started a month ago. At one point it seemed to have subsided but not completely gone. Then it came back as strong as ever. I cannot pinpoint the exact location of the pain/irritation but it seems to be deep and   above /behind the adams apple .Its a mild pain when i swallow, yawn and breath in deep. As others have commented , I can push into the right side of my throat to feel the pain. Not on the left side. There is NO swelling. I went to my Doc on an unrelated issue and broughtr this up. He gave it a very basic examine and didnt see anything out of the ordinary. He did suggest ibuprofen.   Maybe to see an ENT doc if it persists. This is so frustrating.

To update, yesterday I started taking ibuprofen -2 pills (400mg) every 4 hours. The pain DID subside . Much later in the evening it came back and I took 2 more ibuprofen pills. -the pain backed off.
Not a cure of course but a BIG HELP.

I am a dental hygienist and believe it or not, dental professionals are in most states considered experts in head and neck anatomy.  That being said, I think all of you need to realize that a quarter inch difference in location and depth in the neck can mean your problem is caused by something completely different.  To the person who made this thread, the fact that your pain migrates downward in your neck and subsides with the use of antibiotics does make me agree with you that it is probably in your case lymphatic, as that is the direction that it drains, and the reason doctors cannot feel any lumps or swelling is because it is probably deep cervical nodes which they would not be able to feel.  The fact that your problem started shortly after recieving treatment for an abscess worries me, and I think you should be talking to your dentist about this, not your physicians.  People always act like the mouth is seperate from the rest of the body but trust me, it's not, and even doctors don't seem to realize this.  Have your dentist review your x-rays and perhaps take a pano (if the other x-rays you had did not show the jaw) to double check that the abscess didn't spread because if it did it might be the cause of your problems which would cause lymphatic inflammation.  I have also head of lymph nodes becoming overactive after major infections which could also be the case here.  If your dentist cannot make a definitive diagnosis you might want to have an MRI done specific for lymph tissue.  If they can prove that way that your lymph nodes are the problem then you might be able to get a doctor to make recommendations accordingly. On a side note, your ear aches and other infections could very well be related.  There is very little distance between the jaw and certain parts of the ear, meaning any swelling in the jaw area can cause ear problems.  In addition, all infections go through the lymphatic system which all drains downward from the head, and eventually into the deep cervical nodes which then eventually travels to your bloodstream for disposal, so your sinus infections and ear infections could very well be related to your problem because if your lymphatic system isn't draining properly or is backed up there is nowhere for drainage to go.

To the rest of the commenters here, you should all first and foremost be visiting your dentists in my professional opinion.  Doctors so rarely deal with anything relating to the neck that they aren't as proficient at making diagnoses on this region unless it's pertaining to the throat.  In addition, they do not do a lot of head and neck exams so they are less likely to feel lumps and less likely to be able to discern between what is normal and what is not, whereas some dentists do head and neck exams on every single patient, and therefore will much more easily discern unusual characterisitics.  In addition, those of you who had the pain start shortly after dental procedures or problems have an increased need to see a dentist about this and tell him that! It is VERY likely related in some way or another and even if it isn't I honestly think a dentist will have a better chance of identifying the problem than your doctor will.  Depending on the exact location of the pain though you guys might have anything: an infection, TMJ problems, an abscess, an inflammation of your salivary glands, acid reflux, etc.  Chances of the answers you guys find here being what you actually have are 1 in a million to be quite honest.  Visit your dentist!

Try taking an anti anxiety med such as paxil for two months, see if it helps. I have the same throat pain, also major pain on both sides of my neck when I'm stressed. It might sound like it would not help, but try it. I'm going back on paxil soon and I'm almost positive it will help.
