I've been dealing with similar symptoms for years now. It usually starts with itching hands or feet but sometimes it's other areas of the body like the back of my thigh when I would sit in a chair. I'm a 47 year old man and I exercise daily and consider myself to be in good health. A few years ago a blood test showed signs of elevated creatinine. According to my doctor, that was possible signs of diabetes. At that time, I was taking Creatine for body building so once I got that news, I immediately stopped taking the creatine and reduced my sugar intake. Since that time, my levels have been normal but the swelling continues. Can't figure this thing out!

You should try the Candida diet. This diet, in addition to restoring the good bacteria in your intestines through the use of probiotics, eliminates the consumption of chemicals that are used inconvenience foods, non-organic meats and artificial sugars. You'll also lose weight.

You should be aware that meat producers are using antibiotics in their meats, especially chicken. Even fish farms use it. A recent study discussed in the New York Times last month revealed that the chicken growers are feeding their chickens feed that contains antibiotics, arsenic (makes the flesh pinker), and Benedryl. The farmers were unaware because they receive their feed from the large food companies that contract with them. The solution is to eat only organic meats.

Tampa7603 high cholestorol will not cause this level of swelling. This sounds like an allerigic reaction. Any new medications or foods?

Hi mark. Just like you and others, I have and is currently experiencing the same symptoms. I went years without experiencing symptoms after I was diagnosed with hives which resulted in my immune system being too high. I honestly thought having a high immune system was a good thing, but I guess not. So I was prescribed meds to lower my immune system and my symptoms went away almost instantly. I must say, during that time in my life, I was drinking v8 splash drinks which are high in vitamin A and C, almost daily. I guess those drinks resulted in my immune system becoming too high. NOW, years later, the symptoms have returned and v8 splash drinks are no longer in my diet. So something else has to be the cause. I was thinking that maybe the cause could be physical stress from standing up too long, which would cause my feet to swell, or from lifting heavy weight when I workout, which is why my hands and wrist are swollen. But my lip is swollen. There is NO workout that I do where I use my mouth. So physical stress, I'm close to ruling out. I'm thinking that something is going on with my (our), immune systems and the bacteria in our bodies. One commenter mentioned a Candida diet. I'm trying that as my next course of action being that out of all of the info on here, that has appeared to be the most mentioned solution. Good luck.

As I've mentioned previously on this post, I had all of the swelling and hive symptoms which got worse over a period of seven years. It's clearly some sort of allergic reaction. The comment regarding an overactive immune system is an interesting one and may have some merit. The question is, how do you slow down an overactive immune system? In February, I went on the Candida diet and followed it religiously. It is designed for yeast infection but I believe it how some kind of healing effect on the autoimmune system. I was on it for five months and it stopped the symptoms. I'm now able to have some sugar and carbohydrates including alcohol without a reaction. However, I'm staying away from sugar substitutes and convenience foods as well as non organic fish and meats. I also read food labels and won't eat anything with preservatives in it.

OMG! I have the same symptoms also my wrist, hands, under my feet @ between my toes, my lips, my butt @ even my tongue. I get this itch @ then it starts to flare up. It last anywhere from two or three days. I went to the doctor they can't even explained why this is happening to me. After the swelling goes down then have soreness for a few days. If anyone find out what this is please let me know.

Hi, I have had similar symptoms in my past as well. I am 32 now but I noticed my hands and feet started to become itchy and swollen when I was about 25. I noticed that the fleshy padding just under the balls of feet would gradually become irritated on occasion. At first I didn't think the itching was anything more than a case of common athletes foot until one day when I walked barefoot on a hardwood floor. The sensation was immediately confusing. I felt like I was stepping on something stuck to the bottom of my foot. Years later my hands had similar reactions but nothing was ever overwhelming or painful. The only thing that would trigger any repeating symptoms was exposure to cold water. Sometimes after going swimming in the river for the day I would experience these reactions but not always. I have been very fortunate so far in that the swelling has never really gotten any worse. To this day I still don't know what causes it but running warm to hot water over the swelling seems to "thaw" it out and it usually goes away no more than 30 minutes after that.

Yesterday my hand began itching and I noticed a small hard swelling on the side of the palm which seemed redder than the rest of the palm. It's continued to itch and has grown and today is about and inch long and slightly narrower. I think it's an allergy but have never experienced it before. It's below skin level. I ate two double choc biscuits, the only out of the ordinary food. Also noticed at the same time yesterday a small swelling which turned out to be a flap of skin on my tongue about 2 mm across, looks as though it was cut but I don't recall eating anything sharp. Very odd.

This is the first time I've been back on this site since I posted. I'm totally overwhelmed about the number of people experiencing the same symptoms. After several episodes of my feet swelling, I went to a Podiatrist. They acted like I was making this up, and had never heard of anyone else having these problems. What a waste of money! I found somewhere on the internet about similar symptoms but the cause was attributed to being allergic to the cold. I have noticed that I have this problem more in the Fall and Winter months. When I feel a flare coming on, I put heat on my feet, or wrists, or wherever, and it seems to help the pain. My husband says I'm just using this an excuse to move from Michigan to a southern, warmer state :) I'm still trying to figure this out. Please continue to update.

I looked Angioedema up and it sounds like the best diagnosis I've come across so far. Are you all still having this problem? I am, mainly on my feet and wrists. Thanks :)

Hi bntgarret -

My father has been experiencing the same symptoms as you on and off for the past 2-3 years. It is usually on his lip, around the eyes, head, behind the ears, and hand. We have been to the ER numerous times and all they can do is prescribe steroids. We have been to 3 different allergy specialists and all have the same explanation 'Oh wow, I have never seen this before." He has been taking benedryl and zyrtec to help the swelling to go down. He is tired of going to anymore doctors since no one has been able to help or diagnose the problem.

Its nice to know he is not the only one with the issue. Please keep the blog updated with any new diagnosis.
