My left parotid gland used to swell up, but would eventually subside. It now is permanently swollen. There is about a four inch long hard "rope" under my cheek from ear to mid cheek. The parotid gland under my ear still swells separately from the permanent "rope" and comes and goes. My doctors are useless. When the "rope" swelling started it was very painfull, like having a migrane, toothache and ear ache at the same time. I've been given strong antibiotics which did nothing but cause stomach aches and salagen, which gave me horrible side effects and did not help. Instead of doing a scan on the gland they did a brain scan (?), which of course showed nothing because that's not where the gland is. One doctor thinks it's from Sjogrens, but the blood tests came up negative. They did a lip biopsy for Sjogrens and still it did not show up. Months later my bottom lip is still numb. The ENT I saw said it wouldn't be cancer because it wouldn't be painful if it was. She sent me back to the Rheumatologist who has no idea what to do. At first the pain was constant but still comes and goes. I asked for a second opinion and was sent to the same doctor. It feels like it's starting to act up again but going to the same doctors would be useless. Does anyone know what the symptoms of cancer in the parotid gland are?

Wow, I was just researching Parotitis, as my husband was just in the ER Sat. night due to swelling & pain on the left side of his jaw and came across this site. My husband is currently on a course of antibiotics for 10 days and pain killers. Pain was pretty intense, swelling hasn't gone down very much yet, but we are hopeful. I wonder if those of you who are still suffering have already done the antibiotics and the pain/swelling has come back.

I have an intense pain in both my parotid glands when I eat after arriving home after chemo for colon cancer. (drugs; 5-FU, Oxaliplatin, Leucovorin, steriods) The thought of bringing something to my mouth is often enough to start the pain. I 'tough it out' and slowly start eating and press under my ears. It really hurts but goes away after a few minutes but it will starts again if I take a break. This Web site has the closest comments on the same symptions an I wonder if anyone has some history or insight into my problem. So far my oncologist has no answers.

I just started chemo for colon cncer

I have had this pain ever since I can remember, but I always thought everyone gets it and it's nothing I should worry about. It usually happens when I eat something sour or am about to eat and my mouth starts watering. It is a very sharp pain, but I don't think it's anything to be alarmed about.

I think there are probably several problems which give pain. My own has always been with me, and consists of rapid salivation and quick sharp pain in the parotid gland when I am take the first bite of something I like. My two daughters both have the same symptoms. We sympathise with each others’ sudden shrieks. In the last 50 years, I’ve met a couple of other people who had it. I thought it was just an oddity, but I am now researching Marfan’s syndrome as we also share a lot of other symptoms that are common in our family but not in others. If anyone can shed light on this, I would be truly grateful.

I also have this same swelling in my parotid gland.
I was advised to get a cat scan.
after the dye was injected into my vein, i began to have heart problems that continued for over a week.
I went to the doctor for that as well and NOTHING could be done to help me.

needless to say, i went on antibiotics twice, since July 2010. It is now November.
they did not find any tumor in my gland.

today it is swollen again and I am having twice as much pain as I was before.

I will have a follow up on the CAT scan and see if there is anything else they can do. I have my doubts.

now i seem to have two lumps on the gland. one huge swollen one, and one small one above the gland.

If i could flush it out of my system, that would be ideal... but we will see.

If you've seen an ENT and they didn't help, they weren't good ENTs. My mom recently had surgery to remove a tumor in her parotid gland. The ENT she saw was great! And has done loads of these surgeries.

A week ago, I woke up with acute swelling and pain in my right parotid gland. Not only was my cheek and under my ear swollen, but inside my mouth as well. I also had terrible pain whenever I tried to eat or drink, and the swelling worsened right afterwards. My primary care doc put me on antibiotics, which has helped a great deal but not 100%. Doc suggested sucking on lemon drops to help with saliva production and see if that helps. So far, that hasn't helped.

I also saw the dentist to get his opinion, and he said definitely parotid, but not sure why. Not blocked totally as he was able to get secretions out from massaging the gland. He wanted to send me to an oral surgeon, but said ENT should be fine as well. I found that if I squeezed the gland and massaged up to cheek, the swelling and pain lessened. Dentist did say to drink tons of water to make sure I'm hydrated as that can help.

I still have minor pain and swelling after 7 days on the antibiotics, which is why my doc is sending me to my mom's ENT.

I have the same symptoms as everyone here, with the addition of a stiff neck and extreme arm, hand and leg stiffness and I feel for you, all of you and I know what it's like to feel the pain of this very sneaky culprit 24/7 it's just good to know that I am not alone... My pain started three years ago and I have been to countless ENT's and TMJ clinics and have been told that what I have is an autoimmune disease of some kind i.e Sjogren's Syndrome. I headed to another specialist a Rumatoligist on Tuesday January 11 2011. These appointments are not easy to come by as I live in Canada and must wait and be referred to doctors, I will report my findings on this site and I hope to give us the answers we so desperately seek.

Good luck to all and may your lives be long an prosperous!!

Sincerely

Jeff

re: glandular pain in "jaws:"
I have had this symptom for DECADES although with other health issues (and comparatively minor pain) I have chosen not to explore with doctors.
EVERY morning (and sometimes thru the day) when I take my FIRST bite or drink of almost anything, I prepare myself for a moderate-to-intense "STING" at the back of my jaw. Sometimes more intense on one side than the other it's typically bilateral, and very consistent.

It DOESN'T happen with brushing my teeth (which I do upon awakening); but a moment later when I grab the daily pills with either water or juice, ZING! goes the _____ glands for a painful moment. The type or temperature of the food or beverage doesn't seem to matter much.

That being said, I do have a prior history of TMJ-tooth grinding (which has resolved).
I also have a chronic autoimmune-neuro disease that manifests in various ways-- but I cannot easily attribute "jaw lightening" to MS!:-)

This is obviously a rarely-read forum but I thought I'd give my 2 cents' worth.
Cheers.

about 3 years ago i got a nasty pain under my tongue while i was eating chips, i messed with my tongue for the next few days, and managed to push out a small 1/8"-3/16" of and inch solid white "stone" it brought tears to my eyes, ever since then ithas been a reoccouring problem, but never managed to find another stone, i highly belive it is some kinda of build up, almost like kidney stones, and was wondering if theres a less painfull way of gettin rid of them
