Hi everyone - I've had this problem since I was a small child. You're not crazy, and don't panic. You probably have an autoimmune deficiency, or an allergy - too much histamine in the body. I am lucky enough to have both, and thus the "clown lip" look is a regular thing for me. I also have problems with swollen eyes, where my eyelids puff up and I look like a domestic abuse case. And, on several occasions, I'll wake up with hives, and look like I'm covered in cigar burns. It's very, very frustrating.

Antihistamines are the best thing to take. I myself use a combination of Allegra and Singulair (Allegra in the am and Singulair in the pm). If it's especially bad, my doctor has me take 2 Allegra - a second dose with the Singular in the evening. Your body will either immediately respond or (like mine) take a couple of days to respond, but it will respond. Oh, and carry around Vaseline. Don't use Chapstick or Blistex - I don't know what's in those, but they will happily trigger the clown lip effect.

same story here. Last weekend when I was traveling to Vegas, I used my girl friends lip balm and noticed that my lips became puffy and red. Lips feel kinda numb, sometimes i feel it throbbing. Im also starting to notice small bumps on my lips. Also my body became itchy. I thought it might be herpes...I DONT KNOW!

I've been experiencing the same problem recently. this past thursday night before I went to bed my left foot was really itchy. then I woke up Friday morning and my right side of my lower lip was really swollen. That swelling went away in about 7 hours. Then sunday night my foot started to get really itchy again and started to hurt alittle. I woke up monday morning and now my left side of my lip was huge. A lot bigger then the swelling that occured on friday. I went to the doctor and she gave me allergy medicine.

But has anyone else experienced itchyness or another part of your body hurting alittle right before your lip swells? So far these are the only 2 times this has happened.

I am a 43 year old male with the same problem everyone describes. Over the last year at what seems like random times, my lips start to get numb and tingly and then start to swell. It has happened both in the morning and at night. Antihistimines don't seem to have any impact, and the swelling reduces in about 8-12 hours. I have also had this happen in other parts of my body, including the arch of my foot, but mostly in different parts of my lips. I have gone months without this happening, but then it will happen twice in a weekend. I am glad to know I am not alone. The only allergies I am aware of are aspirin and ibuprofen, but I don't take those anymore. I need to get to an allergist.

Lately I've been experiencing swollen lips or even my face and/or eyes when I wake up in the morning. It's really becoming a bother for me now. I have no idea what it is, or what's making it become swollen. My parents tell me it's the things I eat. After giving birth to my son, I've been eating massively and my diet is not healthy. Other than that, I start to scratch on my body because I feel a little itch, then it becomes real itchy and looks like I got hives or something. It mostly happens on my legs and thighs though. Does anyone know what is going on with me? Are you experiencing the same thing as me? What should I do to help the swollen lips/face/eyes go away? I'm in desperate help right now.

this is a reply to swell guy- I too have been suffering from bouts of swollen lips (and occasionally swollen eyes and hives) since April, 2006. I was terrified at first but have calmed down since antihistamines like Claritin and Benadryl seem to help. I have been to an allergist who scratch-tested but no food allergy was confirmed. Since then I have been keeping a food diary. I think in my case it is either MSG or a combination of MSG and other factors (fatigue, dehydration, hormonal shifts) that bring it on. In your case since you mentioned you are allergic to aspirin, you might want to look into the food coloring tartrazine- yellow #5 I believe. It is in a lot of things varying from Gatorade to Tums to wasabi and people who are allergic to it are also allergic to aspirin. Good luck!

I have had this problem off and on over the course of this year and I believe its an allergy. At first it went away after a few days and now I have had it for a month.

Its just in one area of my upper lip and it has not gotten worse but has not disappear entirely. My advice would be to write down every drug and food you are using and then change your diet to see if goes away so you can pinpoint it.

I HAD A TOTAL THYROIDECTOMY IN JULY 2006. I HAVE EXPERIENCED HIVES AND RECENTLY SWOLLEN LIPS . THE LIPS BURN THEN SWELL. USALLY IN THE AM AFTER I SLEEP I WAKE UP AND THE LIP IS BIG. ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER. IT BURNS AND IS PAINFUL. IT REALLY MADE ME NERVOUS. NOT SURE IT IT WAS A ALLERGIC REACTION SO WAS IT GOING TO CONTINUE ON TO THE THROAT? SO FAR IT HAS STAYED ON THE LIPS . I HAD A DENTIST GIVE ME FEMVIR IT DIDN'T WORK. I TAKE ZETREC BEFORE I GO TO BED AT NIGHT. TODAY I TOOK ONE IN THE AM AS WELL . I CANNOT FIGURE OUT THE CAUSE. MY LIPS TINGLE AND BURN THEN GET FAT. THE WORST THING ABOUT MY THYROIDECTOMY WAS GOING WITHOUT THE MEDICATION . NO THYROID MEDS IN MY SYSTEM. ALSO FEAR OF THE SX . MAY HAVE BROUGHT THE HIVES ON BUT WHAT IS THE SWOLLEN LIPS FROM. PLEASE REPOND IF YOU KNOW

I have had bouts of this, getting worse every time. They did a scratch test and with no food allergies. I managed to get it under control for about a month, but then it returned while I was away at a seminar for a week. It may be a combination of Hives, swollen lips, swollen eyes, swollen cheeks bumps on my head, Sometimes difficulty breathing. I have an Epi pen, but the directions say go the hospital if you use it. I have been able to bring it somewhat under control with Anti histamines. Last week, the facial swelling left me unrecognizable. The allergist says I may be allergic to myself. I have been able to stop the reaction by avoiding Coke, Diet Coke, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Italian Salad dressing, jelly candies, and some types of tonic water. Recently, I had a reaction to Chocolate. . I am getting the impression it may be a preservative of some type. If anybody can figure out what’s causing this and how to make it stop, please let me know.

I've suffered with swollen lip for years. It starts out a a stingle in my lip then they start to swell, get hot and then small bumps start to appear (sort of like a fever blisters). They crack and peel and it looks awful. My lips are really sensitive to hot things, but cold compresses give me some relief.

I was tested for allergies, about 4 years ago and I'm allergic to several things, but this is what I've found:

Three major things start my break outs and it sounds like others have the same issues.

- an ingredient in wine (chardonnay), wine cooler or margaritas. I stay away from wine coolers, they are killers for a flare up. I think its sulfites

- SPF products (my dermatologist told me a lot of people are allergic to a particular ingredient in sun block, but I can find the name of the ingredient that she gave me, if I find it I will post.
- jalapeno peppers (really peppers of any kind)

The first 2 are the main ones. (This time my break out was cause by using a lip product with SPF)

I take zytec and a Antihistamine and a hydrocortisone cream applied twice daily (my doctor told me not to over do it with the hydrocortisone on my lips; causes the skin to become thin). I also start to drink lot of water to flush my system. I'm going to try the HBalm recommended by someone on this site, because I had a good product to drying

My mother has the same problem.

This started happening to me back in April. I would get swollen, numb feet and hands (only one hand or foot at a time), and swollen lips, but only on one side at a time. It might move around my mouth, as the swelling went down on one side, it would start in the other side and sometimes move from top to bottom. Also swelling in the tongue (one side at a time) or the back of my throat. Also mega-hives. I was tested positive for a bacteria called yersiniosis. Some people develop Reiter's syndrome (reactive arthritis) after being infected with this type of bacteria and from the reading I've done, it can also be a symptom of sexually transmitted disease. I'd advise doing a search on Reiter's syndrome or reactive arthritis and see if the symptoms match. I had to have a week of intravenous antibiotics to get rid of the bacteria and it still happens from time to time but the symptoms are much less and easier to manage.

I have the same problem....I think that it is an allergic reaction to my cat or something on my cat. It doesn't happen everytime I touch her...just once in a blue moon. I will pick her up and minute later my mip swells up.

I have the exact same symptoms as the 37 year old guy. Mine swell up on EITHER the top or bottom lip. Never both at the same time and it is either on the left side, the middle or on the right side and yes, it goes hard when its swollen. I think I know the answer to it.... it could be the toothpaste we use that does this. Maybe it is an allergic reaction not cancer or anything like that.
I hate them when they swell up i never want to go out, they are so embarassing. :$ If I do go out people look at me like this :-) o.O
