I ( 36 year old female) too am dealing with swollen lips that come and go throughout the day. I have been lucky enough not to have clown lips, but definitely the Angelina variety. Perhaps I should be grateful, but it is not comforting. I have no idea why this happens and I just want an answer. The allergist just wants to give me cortisone shots and send me on my way. I am in the midst of trying to rule some things out in my environment - sodium lauryl sulfate (in toothpaste and soaps), nickel (in silverware) etc. It is comforting to know that I am not alone. I had read a comment on a post about someone who had had their thyroid out. There is a connection to that and swollen lips. I am sorry that I can't seem to find a reference or the name of the disorder. I also found a useful thread. It lists a lot of the common reasons for swollen lips. It can be found at

Good luck to everyone, and maybe together we can discover answers.[/url]

Hi guys swollen lips can be a sign of an allergic reaction but sounds to me if your getting cold sores on the mouth and nose. it can be from a different type of herpes, HSV-1, which is the most common type, usually causes cold sores (oral herpes). try reading this

netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/facts/coldsores.htm

This may apply to some of you but not all but if you experience severe swelling on the lips try a compression ice message to help with the swelling.

* what you do is take and ice cube and message the area in circular motions until the ice melts **** But no more than 15 min
* also try abreva for cold sores or h balm

Thanks hope this can help some of you guys

I have had these symptoms as everyone describes; by trying to self diagnose, I beleive it may be 'cheilitis'. Nothing I've tried really works to any effect but petrolium jelly (Vasline) seems best to relieve the problems slightly.

Upon wakening in the morning I often have crusty lips from the weeping through the night. I generally try to gently pick this off then apply a coating of Vasline afterwords to try to appear more normal. I work where I have to face customers all day so it is also quite bad for me.

I find it funny that while reading some of your posts, i feel as if i could have written them myself. For several months, i have suffered from this type of lip swelling. The swelling is loaclized around my lips and sometimes cheeks. Like some of you, it is only the top or bottom, never both. Several times a month my lips are swollen upon awakening. It only happens sometime at night, several hours after i have fallen sleep. I am positive my lip swelling is not caused by allergens.

For me, it is more likely to occur after i have had a couple beers. I read on another forum that yeast may cause the lips to swell. Dont have much research behind that though. Im still searching for the cause. Hopefully one of you finds it soon.

your problem sounds similar to mine a few years back. exact same symptoms and feelings. my dermatologist put me on a medication that helped my immune system with my histamine response. He said I'd grow out of it after a while on the medication and I did - a couple years later. sorry i dont know what the med is called... it was several years ago.

I get the same reaction with my lips when I eat dressing made with both olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I have been reading that some cheaper balsamic vinegars have a preservative that some people are allergic to. It's called a sulfite. Sulfites are also found in other foods as well. The FDA has been looking into sulfites for a while now. I am planning to see a specialist and be tested for a sulfite allergy. I suggest you do the same.

I thought I was all alone on this one. In the past 5 months, I have had random swelling in my lips. Perhaps 3-4 hours and then goes away. More recently though, I lips and cheeks have been swelling and staying that way for up to 24 hours. I have seen an allergist who was unable to pinpoint it to a particular food or product or mites or pollen, or any of the other 13 things he says I am allergic to.

I considered MSG. I have heard a lot of people have reaction to MSGs as a result of having an sensitivity to them (can't say allergy or the MSG people get pissed).

Still searching though!

I am so glad to see I am not alone. My lips have swollen to at least 5-6x their size 4 or 5 times in 4 months. The first time it happended I was eating oatmeal and by the end of the bowl my husband and i could not believe the size of my top lip. The second and thrid time it was at different times and more than once it was over 6 hours since i ahd had anything to eat. My lips don't hurt, i just get a definate "feeling", almost an itch and poof it swells in 10 minutes. I don't want to go to work when it happens I look abused and no matter how fast I take something it swells up. The swleeing lasts 8-12 hours if I take something or not. Sometimes it's my top lip, today it was both. It happened right when I woke up. I had allergy prick tests for food and not one food allergy came back. My allergist thought it is an intolerance to Salycilates wheich is a naturally occuring enzyme(I think) in a TON of foods. You are not allergic, you have a reaction when you get too much salycilate. It's in Red food coloring, yellow, liquers, spices, fruits, so much stuff! I don't know if this is really what is going on, but I thought I would pass on the info since my allergist knew about this condition. Hope your lips return to normal size!

My daughter has also been having zwollen lips. She's allergic voor melons, mango, kiwi, almonds, banana and grapes.

She's 28. Only problem is that she is also handicapt. She's had it 9 times now.
Next month I have an appointment with a speceialist. I'm very worried about it because it seems to get more zwollen everytime. I remember taking her to the night doctor the first time and she said that it will keep getting bigger. It's sad. I hope the specialist will give us advice on how to deel with this.
Everything seems to have glucose and sometimes this is made from grapes as you know.
Bye for now

About two years ago I woke up one morning with both my lips greatly swollen. It did not go down after a few hours so I went to the emergency room very worried because they were so swollen I was afraid they would literally burst. At the emergency room they gave me steroids which immediately started to cause the swelling to subside.
After a few months I had the reaction again to my upper lip right side only. After taking some benadryl it went away within an hour. A few months later the same thing only the lower lip left side. Again, after some benadryl it went away.
Since then I have experienced this about 7 or 8 times. This past weekend I was sick and on Saturday my lower left lip swelled. Benadryl did not help. It went away after almost a day. Next day I could fweel my gums tingling and sure enough my upper right lip swelled later that night. This morning it was still swollen. Benadryl no longer does the trick.
This would make it approxiamately 10 times now. Here are some of my observations from trial and error from so many occurences.

Things it is NOT:
1. It is not a spider bite (as the emergency room suggested) If it were it would be unusual to keep getting bit on my lips.
2. It is not stress related. (only during 2 of the episodes was I stressed out about something)
3. It is not due to change in diet
4. It is not due to allergy of laundry detergent or household chemicals.
5. It is not due to allergy to pet. (pet passed away a year ago)
6. It is not a food related allergy as best I can determine.

Things it MIGHT BE:
1. I never considered the wine or beer thing before so I can't rule that out since I only have beer or wine once in a great while. I did have a beer the night before this last outbreak.
2. I have noticed that it may have occured after sleeping on my stomach. So I am wondering if somehow laying on my stomach with my face in the pillow I may be cutting off circulation or breaking blood vessels in my face. I also awoke with a swollen tongue while slepping face down.
3. Maybe lowered immune system. (Can't rule that out)
4. Maybe hereditary. (Can't rule that out)
5. I have considered it may be a bacterial infection. Maybe something like bacteria on toothbrush scraping inside mouth. Or... maybe by touching my hand to my lips while asleep after touching ummmm "other body parts which are prone to have high levels of bacteria". (It's not pretty to think about but I guess it is a possibilty)

When this first happened I was really scared. Now it has happened so frequently I no longer sweat it. I know I will look goofy but eventually it will subside. With each occurence I am able to eliminate and narrow the possible causes. Eventually I will narrow it down enough to figure it out.

Alright I have read these post in here to try and find some kind of reasoning with my incident and no luck. I was out today shooting basketball and this happened. Now I know I have some type of histamin problem cause I break out in blotches ( like small lil welps that are itchy as hell) when I starting sweating or if I am out in the cold. I have never had my lip to swell up though. It's my top lip only and it has been atleast 2 hours now since this happened. I took an antihistamin an hour ago and no results.

If this was a food allergy or something similar wouldn't this have happened before? What could have caused this and how do I take care of this?

Thanks in advanced!!!

And yes, it happens to me to.....I'm so glad i found this thred!!!

But thing is it's only just started in the last 4 months and only happened about 6 times.
At first it was one swollen lip, upper or lowwer and only on one side. Other times it has been my eye only, lasting for 4-6 hours.

The other night it was the worst it has been. Right eye and both upper and lower right lips swollen. My lips were about ten times the size they should be, and now I have little strech marks on the inside of my lips. This time it lasted about 24 hours and i took 2 "Claratyne" which only reduced the swelling a little.
I have this after sleeping as well. I thought it might be my pillow, it's a litle old, but oh so comfy. So i'm going to ditch it for a new one and i'll let you know how i go, and if it happens again.
Good luck fellow swollen friends/ dectives.

I'm so glad to read that I'm not alone! The first time this ever happened to me was while eating a strawberry/rubarb pie (it also had other things in it as well), and while I was eating my lips seemed to burn, and by the next morning they were swollen, red, peeling, and along the edge it seems that it's sore and slightly weeping. It's since then happened two more times. I can sort of 'sense' when it's going to happen. I always have chapped lips (I'm well known for ALWAYS having chapstick in my purse, pocket, desk, coat, by the bed, etc), but this feels different. They're sort of tingly and numb. I tried to think of what I'd eaten the last two times it happened, but I can't pinpoint it. I regularly eat strawberry cream cheese, but I've been eating it for years without problems. I look terrible, and my job is interacting the public, particularly children, and I'm afraid people think I'm horribly diseased! Like some, it generally only happens severely to my upper lip- although my lower lip peels as well, it has little swelling and none of the weeping and redness at the edges. It also tends to peak overnight, and its worst when I wake up. I have a doctor's appt in 4 days (by my luck it'll be gone by then and she'll have nothing visual to go on), so we'll see. I hope I have some details to share soon!
