I recently as of last night started with the same thing. Now when ever i eat i end up with my neck about the size of a baseball and it hurts it does go away after a few hours then when i try to eat again the same thing happens i am an alcoholic so i am going to be trying not to drink for now to see if it gets better.  I mean it got so bad this morning that i even had a hard time breathing and had to call the paramedics out to me.

I'm having a similar issue, last night I went on a 20+ mile mountain bike trail loop with some friends and had about 6 beers. I generally don't drink much, probably less than 10 beers a month so needless to say it was more than I'm used too. I did bring a water bottle along but unfortunately there were no opportunities to refill once I finished it about 2 beers in. Mountain biking is very strenuous so I was sweating profusely and by the end of the ride I was severely dehydrated and hadn't eaten much that day so I pretty much only had alcohol in my system. I realize the conditions were less than ideal but it was a spur of the moment ordeal and I did not realize how long I'd be out there(about 6 hours). At the end I reached a point of nearly passing out and had to lie down quite a few times. Once I finally got home and could get water and food, it was very hard to me to eat or drink. Even just water made my throat hurt tremendously and it took me nearly an hour to eat a sandwich. That being said, this morning, now sober, I realized how bad it actually hurts. I can eat about two bites of something before my lymph nodes swell so much that swallowing the food is excruciatingly painful and I have to sit an recover for about 5 minutes. I'm not a very big fan of doctors but from what I've read on here it sounds like I should go to be on the safe side. Any advice?

i have a similar problem, for instance, last night i had 4 dos equis beers. i get up this morning, have a drink of water and as i swallow i get a slow creeping kind of ache that spread to my lymph nodes under my jaw. so i kinda just shake it off, then i pack a bowl of good home grown and smoke it. Same thing happens, get a slow creeping ache as I exhale, but this one is a little more intense. It literally feels like tendon on both sides of my tongue start to spasm. And now my lymph nodes are slightly swollen. I think it's from drinking last night...any physicians thoughts out there?

I rarely if ever drink, but about a month or so ago experienced this problem. It was painful and lasted about a week. My doctor said he wasn't worried because I didn't have a rash with the pain. I didn't understand what it could be from. I quit taking aspirin as I thought that was the culprit. I had just started taking an aspirin a day and then no more symptoms, but then my husband made me a vodka drink and then there it was again. I resumed taking aspirin without incident.

This morning I drank an herbal energy drink and today I am having the same type of swelling in my throat, albeit not as intense. I am going to write down all the ingredients and see if later I can pin point the exact cause when I have another attack.

I have read that heavy drinkers have this issue, but that's not me. I also quit smoking years ago. The dehydration issue seemed intriguing as I am notorious for not drinking enough water, but it doesn't seem to fit well with the circumstances. If I figure out what the ingredient in that drink has to do with anything else, I'll post it later.

diluted apple cider vinegar with warm water and honey seems to help every time....

I have had this, one beer, neck glands swollen. I have attributed this to the barley malt in beer, since I was diagnosed as celiac from two high positive blood tests for celiac.

I am also having this problem!

I've always found that when I drink beer I get a slight ache in the left side of my neck. I thought nothing of it, assuming it was a slight allergic reaction. I had never had any other symptoms, even last weekend when I went to a cottage with some friends and spent the entire weekend drinking.

Monday morning I actually felt pretty good,(despite the three day bender), so that night I went to a friend's apartment for a few drinks. Turns out he had a keg, and the beer was beyond flat. I got blackout drunk (first time ever for me) and puked all over the place when I got home. The next day (tuesday) I woke up with a severely swollen lymph node behind my ear with a smaller one just below it.

After looking up a lot of scary things online, I came to this site and let me just say THANK YOU! I feel so much better now! This is clearly some kind of allergic reaction, and in this case I think it was made worse by the punky beer. I've never had swollen lymph nodes before as a result of alcohol but because it is only one one side and the side corresponds with discomfort I had in the past as a result of alcohol, it's only logical to assume they're related. As another poster said, it can't be Hodgkins because it's only one one side. And they're definitely not cysts or tumors because of the fact that they are hard and slightly sore (also their location).

So to everyone else reading this right now: RELAX!! I still have swollen nodes (three now actually, one came up on the back of my neck right around my where my hair ends), but I am confident they will get smaller (they already have) until they are back to normal. The moral of the story: NO MORE BOOZE FOR THIS GUY!

Im a bit worried too. I don't drink much anymore but when I have one night out, I pay for it up to a week after. My neck and shoulders become really sore and stiff and lumpy after consuming alcohol. My dad thinks its a build up in toxins but its getting worse and I am only 22. I feel like I am too young to be suffering like this after one night out a month , if that?! What should I do? Get a professional massage? Go to a doctor?

I thought I was the only person who experiences this!! Mine is my neck radiating clear to my mid back, and is a horrible aching that will become unbearable at times. It is brought on most specifically by certain liquor. The feeling is like having a severe headache type pain ... But in the neck and back. I was really beginning to question myself until I read this post.

My doc says that with age some develop allergies to tyramines. I think it may have to do with my inability to metabolize alcohol made from wheat, rye, corn, etc. I learned that alcohol from potatoes has less tyramines. Chopin and Titos vodka are the few brands on the market that work. Vodkas like these that distill more than once reduce the impurities that cause problems. Most other brands sold in the US are not true potato vodka. I can do this, but only in small amounts with the aid of an over the counter allergy med taken about 20 min prior. Otherwise I will get flush and can experience sharp pains in my jaw or end up with swollen glands, my throat will feel like it's closing up, extreme heat, other side effects, My dad has a similar allergy. I have found that most Mexican beer, like corona and dos Equis, and and other bland US brands like bud and miller and super dark beer (porters/stouts), and red wines and champagne trigger the worst reactions. If you have one drink lots of water and an allergy med. the potato vodkas allow me to have a drink or two periodically which is great.

This is almost exactly what happened to me. I do have an alcohol problem, which exacerbates things, but the brain fog, panic attacks, red eyes, swelling of the throat: these all seem to be symptomatic of drinking. The onset was rather quick. The brain fog and panic attacks are horrible. I feel like I can't concentrate on a single thought, and the panic attacks make me feel as if I am loosing my mind. I don't see any visual signs of swelling, but there is the tell tale stiffness in my neck, and now it's after a single drink. On the plus side, I have wanted to quite drinking for years.

Let me know how it goes. You and I are experiencing the exact same things. I hate to give up Red wine... but I guess I can stop to detoxic and renew only to pick it up again at a later date when healthier. Sensory overload with sulfite etc. Hum weird how the body changes on us. Guess we gotta pay attention and cater to its need not just the emotional part.

You are the first person to mention the increase in swelling after eating that I have ever found. It is extremely frustrating to have this happen, and the swelling does last 3-5 days. It only happens after I have consumed alcohol in a larger than normal portion. I just don't know why? I have talked to doctors and scoured the internet with no results. Why would food affect the swelling of the glands? and why does this happen sometimes and not others? Is it the result of the Kidneys or liver shutting down?

Having read people's own experiences I now know the connection with alcohol and swollen glands is definitely what's been and is going on with e too. I am going to cut it out completely and detox. I too have extremely stressful life and must be careful about my own health. The reaction I am getting from alcohol with swollen glands and sore throat and viral type feelings has become more and more obvious in recent months and my intolerance has got worse and worse. My immune system must be struggling so much ghT it can't cope. I'm not an alcoholic either but I think I will stop the small amount I have at weekends now as I'm not getting any enjoyment out of it. The consequences outweigh any benefits now so I'll give my body a rest. Thanks for all your comments as I was getting. Erg concerned about this and it seems I'm not alone with the connection. Xx
