I had the same problem a couple of years ago. I finally realized I was allergic to ground up flax seeds and ground up sesame seeds. I was eating them for health reasons, but no longer can. Swollen painful lips are most likely an allergic reaction to something you either are eating or applying to your skin or lips.

Do you by any chance use Splenda sugar substitute? My husband has suffered from the same symptoms for almost a year...and cannot sleep well at night for the pain and dryness. He's also seen two dermatologists in this timeframe...with no success from their treatments and the statement that "he's a challenge." We were on the verge of looking for an allergist to see if that specialty could help him, when I googled his symptoms and read some interesting remarks from current/former users of Splenda (which we also use). I (so far and thankfully) have not been afflicted with his condition/symptoms but also use Splenda. He also has Type II Diabetes, and was improving beautifully to the point of being able to stop taking one of his medications, when all of a sudden his A1C levels spiked after he experienced a bout of cellulitis. We are going to stop using Splenda today and we'll see what happens. It's worth a try if it brings him any kind of relief from his suffering and self consciousness over the appearance of his lips.

I also have this, it starts as itching and redness above my top lip adn then they start to get really chapped and then its gets all red and chapped broken skin look, its so emabarrising in school. Also when it heals after a certain amount of days it leaves like a mustace looking brown mark on my skin. i try to cover ituup with makeup but it still shows through and it always comes back. i dont understnad what it is, and the dermatoligist toook some skin flakes off my lips and the top area around it and checked it out he said that there was no yeast or any idetification. I was thinking it was a food allergy but i dont know what it is, i wish this was more popular known to doctors, so it can be explained more and have a complete cure/ treatment for it. OMG, I am having this same exact issue. Throbbing but feels numb when I touch my lips, they are swollen with little red bumps, and my whole lip starts peeling every three days. I have been using different chap sticks and it will not help at all. This has never happened to me, and now I'm on week 3. Could it be some kind of seasonal allergy?

Well I have heard that applying Vaseline around the affected area helps heal swollen lips or chapped ,and it prevents instant itching. Try it, it helps a lot , just apply every once in a while, preferably during the mornings or nights.

In January 2013 I had 2-3 URI bugs & then I got the worst chapped lips ever. I looked like a clown & didn't want to leave the house. I didn't want my husband to even kiss me. My lips & area surrounding them was so red, sore, swollen, itchy, dry etc. Everything I applied to them hurt & stung & did nothing to heal them. The only ointment that I can use on them is Aquaphor that gets applied 24/7. I finally went to see a dermatologist in May & she said I have "Perioral Dermatitis" & prescribed me an oral antibiotic & Metronidazole 0.75% topical cream. It's mid August & I have still not used the prescriptions, due to the adverse reactions that I read about. Besides I looked up "Perioral Dermatitis" & saw case pictures & my lips/skin problem doesn't look like what I saw. I'm really sick of this.....one day it looks & feels better & then the next day it's bad again !!! Today my lips & surrounding area itch sooooooo bad ! Help.....I need a cure ........

I had the same thing a month ago and tried everything from honey to RX but the only thing that worked was crushing a benadryl to powder form, dab a tiny amount of vaseline on your finger, dip in the benadryl powder and apply to your lips...ahhhh...you are welcome!

I used fucicort cream and it does make all the pain and dry cracked skin go away and heal after apply for 1 or 2days but sometimes still come back too but after months and it depends but once I put the cream on, is all good again. So the cream is my MUST HAVE medicine in case I get all those pain again on my lips! I cant live without the cream.

This sounds like an allergic reaction! I had this allergy for years, I finally narrowed it down to a food additive called "carrageenan." It is added to a lot of foods to make them more creamy, things like half and half, sour creme, almond milk, frosting, ice cream, etc. This explains why the condition can get better and worse seemingly without reason, because some days you consume it and days you don't. It took a long time for me to pin-point it because the reaction is not instant. If I eat something with carrageenan, it takes hours or even a day for my lips to turn red, itchy and swollen. I also have eczema that seems to be connected with this allergy. Much sympathy to all of you, hope this helps!

I wrote about this lip problem as a guest (4 mon. ago). My problem has improved 98% by using "Triamcinolone 0.1% Cream RX" on the skin around my lips & then using Aquaphor on my lips 24/7. My dentist also suggested I switch from Colgate Total to a toothpaste w/o SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), so now I use Sensodyne ProNamel. She also had me use around my lips OTC "Lamisil Cream 1%" (an antifungal for athlete's foot or jock itch) to clear up any yeast growing on the skin. I'm finally feeling almost normal again. I'm not in constant pain anymore or looking like a clown w/big red, sore lips ! I better knock on wood that this regimen keeps working......it sure feels good to be smiling again, after suffering for the past year and a half !
