I discovered that I have the same reaction and that it was due to my toothpaste, which has the anti-bacterial triclosan. I switched toothpastes, started taking probiotics to replenish the good bacteria that the triclosan was probably killing off, and my lips gradually got better.
I also used Yu-Be cream on my lips to help dryness - this is a very rich, non-greasy, gentle cream good for lips and hands. After not having this problem for a long time, I recently got it again after I made a short holiday visit to family and using their toothpaste. I knew it had triclosan, but I thought, it's only a few days... But now I have the same exact symptoms as before! Never again!

I know this is late but I want to get a successful answer out. Someone close to me had this same problem & like you tried everything. The doctor gave this person a cream that treated the symptoms but it would always come back. And I asked the Lord Jesus to help me figure it out. Praise you Jesus for answering my prayer. This person used all kinds of fancy shampoo's & conditioners & gels to keep curls or stuff to protect the hair from the heat of the curling & straightening irons. Without a second thought as to what this stuff could be doing to her shin.Take a look at the chemicals in these products & you'll be shocked. It's no wonder this person had rashes & swollen itchy lips. So to cut a long story short this person stopped using all those products & only used baby shampoo & a mild soap like Dove. After the 1st shower this person began to heal. To date a problem that plagued this person & was the source of so much pain for about 2 years is COMPLETELY GONE. Please stop putting vasalene on your lips it only aggrivateds the problem. Do the research & lookup vasaline on the net. I pray that this truth will heal you as well.

I assumed he had an allergy to the aspartame or splenda he was consuming in his coffee and soft drinks. Then we found out about GMO's and how damaging they are. Also, after researching GMO's we also realized how glyphosate, the weed killer most non-organic food is laced with is damaging people's gut everywhere- notice all the gluten intolerance/celiac disease and Chrone’s disease coming out of the blue and increasing like crazy? The amount of poisons in our food has also been increasing throughout the years like crazy. When lips are inflamed they are signaling a problem in the gut (they are part of the digestive system). Consider it like a red flag. Anyway, our family ended up going completely organic once I realized how bad conventional food was and that our government has been allowing the food industry to slowly poison people. We didn’t do this with a goal of curing his lip issue, but it did completely cure it. He has been eating organic, no soda, etc. for a year now and has not had an issue with his lips. Sometimes they tingle and start to hurt if he drinks beers that aren’t organic or eats out too much. Now we're convinced that this was his body’s allergy to GMO soy, because the first time he broke out with it was when he was working out alot and consuming protein bars/shakes daily. We’ve since then realized how bad those products are for you, they are packed with GMO soy. It's possible for other people to have an allergy to other chemicals that are in products we use, such as toothpaste, shampoos, etc. But we wanted to be sure to let people know that if you are still looking for an answer, it may be that your body is allergic and reacting poorly to the harmful glyposate and GMO's that are in ALMOST all conventional food. By the way, his brother was also having gut problems and was just diagnosed with Chrones. We are glad he changed his diet before something like that happened to him. So even if this helps one person, we would be glad....EAT ORGANIC! :)

I have been suffering from this challenging issue off and on for years. It improved or disappeared when being very strict with my diet. I have tried almost everything noted on this site at one time or another thinking this was a reaction to a food, yeast infection or even a thyroid issue. I have had tests and seen doctors. I've quit dairy, wheat, sugar and carbs, changed toothpastes The issue keeps recurring. So, reading this about gmo's is VERY interesting to me. My husband and son are already gluten free and we eat mostly organic. However, the gmo's thing could explain the inconsistency of presenting symptoms. I will try no GMO's and report back my findings. It could also explain the delay in symptoms. I'm trying the lanolin today. I will let you know!

I am wondering if vaseline started off my lip problem. I thought I would just moisturise my lips before going to sleep just to stop any possible wrinkles from developing. After a month I had a few little bumps around edge of lips and with a close up mirror I saw white pigmentation dots under the skin. I stopped vaseline and thought well it is petroleum and who knows if the formula has changed singed grandma's days. More recently i put on an acid based serum to remove dry skin cells from the face and it seemed to slightly sting lips. After a few days the lips started itching just like everyones description and so dry. I think I have developed an allergy to any moisturiser at the moment as everything stings. I think the ingredients in the acid peel like retinol palmitate etc and glycol parabens may have set it off.

I began having sore chapped lips about a month ago. I was constantly purchasing and applying chap-stick and lip balms. My lips and skin around my lips continued to get progressively worse. Around my lips were extremely sore & red with tiny almost blister looking bumps. After several weeks the skin around my lips began to weep clear fluid. My lips were dryer than ever and were cracking and flaking. I then gave up all chap-sticks and lip balms. I began applying bacitracin cream to the skin around my lips and raw coconut oil to my lips in the morning, night, & after washing my face. Within a day and a half all my symptoms have pretty much resolved.

This is an old post but I think I have part of the solution. You are probably having an allergic reaction to a medication or similar. If this is happening around the time of your period it will be something you use around that time. I was suffering with the lip problem now and again but it has now become a full blown allergic reaction with the rest of the face and neck being swollen and big red splotches. I have worked out that the culprit is a sleeping tablet (Somiden) that has caused the problem which I took at irregular times when I couldn't sleep. and my lips would react. I then took it every night for about a week and have spent the morning in Emergency getting it under control. Doctors only want to treat the sympton and should rather look at the underlying problem. My doctor didn't even look at the side effects on the medication he regularly prescribes me and there it was on the sleeping tablet pamphlet's warnings!
