I've been thinking about our collective problem. There's got to be some explanation/solution as to why we lost the ability to taste sweet. I'm referring to those of us who are otherwise healthy and have lost it for no reason. This May will be 3 years for me. I'm thinking about creating a Facebook group for us so we can post more information and what we tried and didn't work, and if anybody has had success with alternative medicine. If we spread the word enough, perhaps some researcher or genius will see it and be able to offer a cure. Please reply to this if you have any interest. If I get a few replies, I'll create the group and post the link here.

Tasteless Breakfast:  Early this morning I noticed I could not taste sugar.  I opened the container of brown sugar and smelled it thinking, somehow, the sugar went bad.  Placing a pinch of it on my tongue, all I could taste was not a taste at all--I could feel the sugar melting--that's it.  Then I got really worried.  I peeled a banana and it had a hint of "banana", but it was the scent--not the taste.  It was as if the banana was just cool glop, no sweetness, no flavor.  I tried salt--and it is a distant memory of salt--salt straight from the shaker was not salty salt, it was a very diluted sense of salt.  I took some bitter coffee grounds and, due to my wondering if I could taste anything, I put some in my mouth--and nothing.  I even chewed the grounds and only got a hint of coffee--but not taste, I think the scent from the crushed grounds in my mouth came from the release of the odor particles going up the back of my throat and I was actually smelling the scent of coffee.  I poured a glass of orange juice and it tastes cold and wet--no flavor.   Okay, now I'm freaked.  I searched an found this forum (thank you).   THE ONLY thing that has changed (deviation analysis here) in my life has been this addition to my oral care.  I just, less than a week ago, using an after-brush rinse.  "Powerful Dentist Clean Feeling up to 3x Longer" is written on the bottle of "Listerine UltraClean with Everfresh Technology".   I am allegedly saying it is this rinse, I am not making a statement, it is  my opinion and is not a conclusive evaluative reporting on this product--it is me, as a consumer, trying to find out why their taste suddenly vanished who is of the opinion, due to this being a new product being used, that it may be related.  I am not affilated with any research or consumer group.  (In other words, I am not bad-mouthing Listerine and do not want to be sued if they (Listerine misconstrues my intent).  I'm just freaked out and worried and want answers.  In other words:  Help!

What do I do?  Have I blasted away my tastebuds for the sake of longer fresh breath?   Will this be a permanent part of my life now?    :(

Eating was my friend...not she is lost.

I lost my ability to taste sweet in November 2014. My mental list of possible causes are: A flu shot I received in October, 2014 or high liver enzymes (AST & ALT) as a result of chronic HepC. I've had HepC since around 1977, so it seems unlikely that it would suddenly cause my sense of taste to go flat...I've never had a flu shot until the one I got in October and I only mention it to see if anyone else on here also got one before they realized their own sense of taste was changing. I have found one thing that allowed me to temporarily taste sweet again. I used a thing called mberry...It's a pill that you dissolve in your mouth and then for the next couple of hours you (or at least I was) could taste sugars & fruits pretty normally. Its also called "miracle berry" (Synsepalum dulcificum) and is an actual berry from a plant.

I had the same thing to happen right after July 4th week. I can't taste sweet at all. I tried a piece of chocolate cake today and it was like eating a sponge with a slick gooey grease. No sweet! I eat now because I have to not because I want to. I started having trouble with dry mouth at night about 8 months ago. I would wake up and tongue felt like leather. My blood sugar seems to be normal. I'm going to try putting aloe vera on my tongue at night and keep some by my bedside to reapply. I pray this is not permanent.

My wife had a taste problem especially for anything sweet since June 2014 today she is cured all the taste already come back to normal. Before that, we had check in to 3 doctors (dentist, ear-nose-throat specialist, and accupuncture specialist) none of them can cure her problem. She had done 12 session of accupunctures with needle in her tongue, finger, ears and cheek. The result is zero, since July 2015 everything back to normal. By the way she already in the late 40s and by natural already menopause, and for sure she is deficient of hormonal like progresterone. She was 66 Kg before and down to 52 Kg before and now she gain her weight back because everything is tastefull. I wan to tell the way I gave her tretament to cure her taste problem which consist of multivitamine with zinc, because of her lost weight I gave her Megestrol Acetate 40mg/mL suspension one full cup once every 2 days and some time every 5 days, some time lapsed to one week/full cup. Megestrol Acetate has a content of progreterone hormonal (becasefull for pregnancy not recomment), this is the cause of rising her apetite and finally she can taste seweet and everything back to normal. I juat want to share a hopeless feeling like any body else in this forum...And now she is back normal condition.

I repainted my room last weekend and after that I had no taste of anything I eat and every food left a bitter taste in my mouth even after eating a mango ice cream. A friend of mine told me the same thing happened to her. It's awful.

Same thing!!!! I had a hysterectomy six weeks ago and was fine until two days ago... now EVERYTHING sweet tastes bitter or medicine like. It's so nasty! Also, sour things have a weird flavor! I just started on a new medicine around the same time, and I'm wondering if that brought it on....

My husband lost his sense of taste September 2014 after having a filling done. We are 99.9% sure that the dentist, unintentionally, hit the Chorda Tympani when giving him the injection for anesthesia. The very next day he noticed that he could not taste anything. He also had sneezing attacks that lasted a few days and developed a severe case of tinnitus all within days of having the filling. He called the dentist, who was stumped and sent him to an oral surgeon. He said that it was possible that the Chorda tympani was damaged and that it would just take time. We gave it time and nothing has changed. The dentist then sent him to a neurologist who had never heard of this and basically said that his taste may or may not come back and if it does it may be different than what it was before. (Very encouraging :() The GP was stumped and sent him to an ENT doctor who basically told him that if he could smell he should be able to taste. He was a real winner. He had an MRI done which ruled out any other possibilities. At this point we know more about it than the doctors who shrug their collective shoulders. My husband has become very depressed and despondent and I am very worried for his mental health. Any suggestions or words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

Oh.... when he does try to eat he gets this horrible "aftertaste" in his mouth that won't go away. Makes him nauseous and not want to eat anymore.

I found this post because I'm experiencing the same thing! It's annoying but kind of reassuring to see someone else has had the same side effect from the drug.

Well its about 3 years later, I got a notification in my email that this post was still up. Mine gradually came back to me. Again I didn't have a sore throat, just "bam" woke up and couldn't taste anything sweet. I see Crest mouthwash a lot in these post, I never used that, always Listerine. Also Ive stayed away from splenda.
