Thank you for sharing your experience and advice. My 5 year old Lab, Rosy was just diagnosed with Addison’s after her 1st very scary episode, during which she almost died. It’s very overwhelming but what you said gives me perspective that I hadn’t been able to put into words when you said “you’re doing something really special for an animal that otherwise wouldn’t stand a chance”. Thank you.
Thank goodness someone here talked some sense. I thought I had landed in a parallel universe. Get real people, if your dog has Addisons, it may die and quite quickly too. Nothing you can feed it will make any difference, it needs drugs, and quickly too.
We found a vet with experience in addison’s Disease about a year after our girl was diagnosed at age 4. Her meds, including percortin continued to rise over the next few years. We then moved from CA to OR and found an awesome vet that believed in diet for helping Addisonian dogs,. We removed beef, pork and chicken from her diet and put her on salmon dry food. Different stores carry salmon but we found Costco’s salmon to work wonderfully. Mabel went from daily steroids and monthly percortin shots of 2 mls to steroids every other day and her percotin shots are at .08 mils. She is now 13 and still runs, plays and fully active. Removing beef, pork and chicken has worked wonders. For treats we look for lamb, salmon or turkey.
A raw diet from a reputable manufacturer (Primal, Tucker's, Natures Variety, etc.) will provide all necessary nutrients in an easy-to-digest form, including the correct amount of potassium and sodium. Raw goat milk infused with probiotics will also be very helpful and reduce the amount of food intake needed, thus reducing the work the digestive system has to do. Daily probiotics also fortify the immune system. Chicken and rice DOES NOT supply MANY vital trace elements. Don't fool yourself with this one. C/R diet is strictly a short-term way to transition a sick dog back into a regular, fully-nutritious diet.
Your friend should not add onions to the dogs meals as onions are toxic to dogs. Google toxic foods for dogs and you’ll get s complete list of foods to never feed to your dog.
Try mixing the egg yolk into other food. Especially if your feeding any dry food. The egg yolk makes gravy!!
Raw eggs put dog at risk for food poisoning--which is ESPECIALLY BAD for a dog with Addison's. Not worth it. Look it up. Agree that chicken and rice is ONLY for short term emergency diet. Not nutritious enough to maintain a healthy dog.
Onion can be VERY BAD for dogs, PLEASE tell him not to do this!
Onions are not good for dogs. My dog is 13 and has Addison's disease since she was 7 years old. She has no appetite anymore.
I have a 13 year old Standard poodle named Shaina, which means pretty in Yiddish, and she is very pretty. She has had Addison's since she was 7 years old. She was down to 35 pounds she should be 50 pounds and the place I took her to at the time just said she had an auto immune disease, but didn't pinpoint it as Addison's. I changed vets to save her life. He did not stop until he found out exactly what was wrong with her. He is a half hour away from me, but I don't care. You do what you have to do to take care of your baby. She also had high blood pressure and thyroid problems, so you can just imagine how much medication she is on. Every 28 days she goes in for her percortin shot and blood work 3 times a year to check all her levels. I am so happy to hear that you have the heart and the means to take care of your sweet baby Sweetie. ❤️
What salmon dry food do you buy? Do you also cook regular salmon too? My dog is 13 and got Addison's at age 7. She lost her appetite about 2 weeks ago, so we have tried everything. Unfortunately it's been all the things you mentioned. She doesn't like anything, not even treats anymore . She goes to the vet for blood work tomorrow. I hope something can be tweaked so that she can get better.
Thank you for your insight. Our pit bwas just diagnosed with Addison's through blood test along with a lot of other test. Once we are comfortable with this diagnosis we want to order the injection on line. Where did you order yours from. Thanks again ♥️
I can relate my Abby sounds a lot like your Sweetie. Abby and I have been battling Addison's for 3 years. Yes it is very expensive but she is worth it. She has almost died 3 times and each time I have to rush her to her Vet. and he brings her through it . He is great she is 12 years old and he has been with her since she was 8 weeks old. Now she is anemic and I'm trying to find a way to get rid of the anemia.
What do you feed yours on ? I have a miniture poodle, her poos to very soft .
Thank you for this helpful info!
