I'm 13 and this has been happening to me since I hit puberty about a year ago . Your comment about it being hyperkeratosis really helped. Something I find interesting is you said it was caused by dairy and I happen to be allergic to dairy . But I have cut out dairy since I found out about this allergy around 8 months ago but I still have the crust in the centre of my nipple. I haven't told anyone about this . Does anyone else have the same problem ? Or is anyone else allergic to dairy ?

I'm 22, don't have any kids yet. I've had this problem since I was in highschool. And I wouldn't even say crusty is the right word but it's just like pin head of sore skin that'll get irritated on the tip of my nipple and hurt until eventually they fall out. I've used bandaids to keep it from hurting when it brushes against my bra/clothing. It comes and goes. Never a constant thing, but I'm glad that it looks like I'm not the only one with this problem.

So I found out that I have hypothyroidism. Some of you may have it. It is a really easy fix as you just have to take sum pills for it. Beware they will probably take some blood here and there.

Hey! I've had this ever since my body started developing (a bit before my teens), so I guess I was born with it. It never bugged me, but now I'm older I'm curious if it impedes breastfeeding. One of my nipples is literally an empty hole sometimes. Anyway, I doubt that it's a sign of a serious disease.

Woah we have the same problem. As i can remember i had this since i was a kid (puberty stage). But mine is inverted nipple. When i use breast suction i can see those tiny pieces coming out. Before, I could pick those tiny bits but this time it hurts and it bleed a little when i tried to pick it with tweezers. This makes me hate myself because i didnt do anything before and now im 21 yrs old having these nips. Im also scared to take off my bra with someone because it looks so unattractive huhuhu. Im so happy that i saw this site and im not the only one who had this problem. Help guys. Any update???

Indentation in the nipple is normal. Depending on what you’re talking about.

I asked my obgyn and she said it is dead skin that is unable to slough off so it just sits there. It's nothing to be worried about according to her

I all, I'm 42 and I've dealt with this since hitting puberty at 11. First of all, rest assure you are fine. I dealt with the insecurities and being irritated with it, I wore a bra to bed for a long time, just so nothing would brush against it. I paid more attention to it than necessary. A doctor once told me, after doing a biopsy, that it was dead skin. That my skin cells actually rejuvenate faster than usual and it creates the crust. Since then, I also believe that hormone fluctuation also plays a role. They are painful to remove and leave my nipples feeling sensitive. Another doctor once gave me a low grade acidic lotion to use and it worked well, but I got lazy with it. I'm married, my hubby doesn't care about it or let it bother him. I have two kids. I did not breast feed very well. I was able to pump milk for about 2 weeks but my babies had a hard time getting milk themselves. It was difficult to accept but once I let that go, I realized what was more important in my life and to not let this area of my body control me. I wish you all the best!

I get dried skin in my nipples, but reading the comments helped me to get rid of it. I have one other question though, my nipples have little bumps around them, is this normal??? I am 14 and have only just started my period a week ago, but I’m just wondering whether this was something I’m to be concerned about.

Hi,
It is normal to have small bumps on the flat, brown part of your breast called the areola. These bumps are called Montgomery glands. They secrete oil that helps to lubricate the areola. They become slightly larger and slightly red/pink when you are pregnant and breastfeeding.

I get this too! I thought I was the only one. Mine is yellow and usually grows back and is rather sensitive sometimes. Only thing is I have it in both.

I’ve had this same problem since I was18. Never been pregnant, don’t have cancer, my gynecologist had never noticed it on my nipples so I never asked but they are super annoying. Itchy until I scratch them off. Happens to both nipples. Just looks like chunks of my skin coming off.

Sounds like it's some kind of discharge, you should ask next time you visit your doctor/gynecologist about it
