I experienced the exact same thing! Used to get acrylic nails and never had a problem. Started doing my own gel nails at home with professional products and uv lamp, and immediately had itchy dry skin on the tips of my thumbs. I tried using heavy sunscreen around that are when I did my nails, it didn't help. I tried covering the skin around my thumbnails with bandages before placing them under the uv light, that didn't help. I stopped doing gel for a month and although the skin was much better, I knew it was still there. Last time I did gel nails, I didn't do my thumbs. I painted them with regular polish and a topcoat. I am sorry to say that I still had the same dry, itchy, cracked throbbing on my thumbtips. I am really concerned about this. I guess the next step is to go to a dermatologist. In my web search you are the only person I found with the same problem. This is awful. I love gel nails, but don't know how much longer I can put up with this. :( Mia in Ohio

I had gel nails for 5 years with no problems. Suddenly, out of the clear blue, I started having blisters around my cuticles and an insane itching under my nail bed. I would wake up in the morning with bloody fingers from scratching them in my sleep. I thought it was the product that was doing it, but have learned that it is the UV lights that cause the sensitivity. I've been doing acrylics (no lights required) with the final coat being gel and the girl has me spending no more than 2 minutes at the very end to cure the gel. I have no problems now, except that I don't like the look of the acrylic nails. They look too fake.

I was also getting nails done for the past 14 years but it was not itchy, but for the last 3 years, its really bad, My fingers are so itchy that they turn red, feel hot on fingers cos I rub them so much. Also last week, I got a blister on my hand cos of itch. And I get nails from few diofferent places. And its itchy from all. One nail artist told me to put my hands in ice cold water for few seconds(its hard to soak for minutes: water too cold) and it does work for a while. But last weekend it was horrible and worst night, I was itchy whole night, did soaking 4 times in a night, but still itchy. Now this weekend, I asked the lady to not to put primer and its still itchy. Please help. I bite my nails so can't live without getting nails done.

You may have developed an allergy to the nail polish remover that may have been used to prep the nail before adding the acrylic. At least that's what happened to me. I would go back and have the nails removed as quickly as possible at least that's what I was told to do. Good luck.

Thanks, I might try to remember to take my own nail polish remover. I actually have my own nail kit to get my nails done. There are 6 pieces I ordered (for about $65 and I take it with me. So thanks.

i actually tot i was alone on this. ive stayd off fixing nails for a while now, and even painting my nails cos of d sore feeling ive had repeatedly in d past. d latest painful experience was abt 3 mnths ago, a frnd gave me a black polish, i applied it to my nails directly,nd ohh my! by d next morning my fingers wer swollen wit blisters, itchy too nd painful. i called her up d nxt day nd asked her wer she got d polish from, she said she bought it in d market at cheap price but hadnt reacted to it as i did. i recently got a foreign pollish from my salonist, nd i havnt experienced it. i guess 1. skin types differ, and 2. d quality of the nail polish matter.

I also have this problem and do not know what is causing it.  I get acrylic nails and fill ins.  However, I have found Dr. Scholl's Foot Powder helps relieve the itching.  I figured if it works for itchy feet, I would try it on my nails.  If you sprinkle it after each hand washing and rub it in around your nails and under them, it will give you some relief.  Be sure to wipe off the excess and please do not touch your eyes.

You are definitely allergic to acrylic liquid, take it off and if you still want acrylic then asked for pink and white liquid by retention. It won't cause an allergic reaction.

So I've been getting my nails done for about 15 years...and been at the same place for about 6 years...only in the past couple months have I started getting a reaction. The tech told me it was that foul smelling liquid they put on the area that they have prepped for the acrylic.....what is that stuff anyways?

I started getting the itchy/burning/peeling reaction earlier this year, and since my regular tech (the owner) had gone on vacation for 6 weeks, I first thought it was "old product", so I let them grow out, tried "gel" nails (which must have been done wrong cause they peeled off within a week) and then replaced them and started over with acrylics at a new place.  Besides the filing abuse that re-tore up my fingers at the new place, the problem with itching and burning skin did not stop with the new acrylic application. So I went back to my regular salon, and the owner told me it was the primer. The primer does make it worse, but even without it I still have the problem even this time. After reading all of this it must be the acrylic liquid they are using that I'm now allergic to - MMA. She seems unwilling to believe I am allergic to her acrylic product, so I doubt she will switch to EMA(sp?). But unless she does silks too, I guess I have to find a new salon. This pain and itching is torture and looks horrible - I'm not paying anymore for this suffering, but after years of nail biting and naturally weak nails, my natural nails aren't strong enough to let me function, much less work in a professional environment. Guess I have to stock up on hydrocortisone/Benadryl and Aleve and increase the nail budget now for sure! Here's to recovery!
