My daughter had the same thing and I have had 3 different doctors tell me its due to Allergies & Asthma. I would see if your doctor could prescribe you on a nebulizer, which is like an inhaler but they breath more of it in. I have one for her and we do it once in morning when she gets up and one right before bed, which really helps. I also have her back up inhaler just in case we are out and she gets wheezy/cough.

When seasons & temperatures change is when it gets bad.. hope this helps.

Glad I found this. My daughter is 4 and I have been dealing with this for a year or more. im at my wits end. she has been to the er 3 times in the past 2 months and to the dr twice. She has been on breathing treatments since she s a baby. we have a humidifier in her room.  coughs so  hard she throws up. She cries and cries. i think its time to ask the dr about singular. and maybe a dr change

Singular (Montelukast Sodium) tablets caused more damage than good. Our 6 year old daughter would cough during the night only, productive cough with mucus and phlegm. Other than that she is perfectly healthy, during the day not a single sign of cough... only at night. This has been going on for the last couple of months. After 4 sets of antibiotics (Amoxicillin and the last one Azitromicin), our family doctor told us to start taking Singular. While we noticed little improvement when it comes to her coughing, we've also noticed she developed some facial tics that she never ever had before. Totally uncontrollable on her side. It was painful to watch sometimes, my husband and I were so worried. On the top of everything, our daughter became super aggressive and very impulsive, which have never happened, not a single time since she was born.

We've decided to take her off of that medicine. It took couple of weeks to "clean out" of her system I guess, until we saw improvement and tics finally completely disappeared. She is not on Singular anymore for the last 6 months and she did not have a single facial tic since then.

While this medicine might help with cough and other breathing problems (I am not denying it, nor I have strong proof that it actually does any good), we've made our decision - never ever again! Nor we would ever recommend this medicine to any parents or anyone's child. There must be some other methods, some alternative medicine. Singular does more damage than good, at least in our case it did.

Our daughter is off of it for the last 6+ months, and even though she sometimes cough at night, during the day she is her beautiful old again. No more tics, no more sudden mood changes, no aggressiveness anymore. Singular gone, our beautiful child came back!

While this might not apply to all kids (every human being is different), I strongly believe some parents will identify themselves with my post. It may help to others too. We don't want our precious children to go through hell if they don't have to. They all have deserved to have nice and worry free life, they are the precious thing we have to fight for.

We are having the same issue with our 2.5year son. He was so normal and happy and active. One day he was playing with our neighbor’s 2year old girl and she was sick and he came home sick, and the DRAMA began. OMG it is horrifying when you hear him coughing through the whole night. Sometimes I feel bad for him that he just wants to play and watch Barney and Mickey Mouse but his cough is so bad that he chocks sometimes. The doctor isn’t telling me anything different from everyone else’s doctor here. The only time he stops coughing for 2-3 hours is when we give him two sprays of the inhaler. He never has gotten better for the last six months. I’m a desperate dad looking for help.

We had this problem with our 4 year old... no sinus pain, and the Dr could not hear anything wrong with the lungs. She prescribed Flonase but after a week it was just worse. The next time we went they gave him an inhaler. We were instructed to use it every 4 hours during waking hours and we could also use it at night if needed. Then after 2 days of continuous use to only use it as needed. We didn't need it anymore after 5 days or so. Still on the Flonase as there might be some allergen that was triggering asthma, although we plan to take him off the Flonase soon, since we are fairly certain that any allergies involved are related to temporary extremely high levels of pollen. The Dr. was saying it had been so bad even non-allergic kids were having issues.

Hope this helps... I understand how scary it is. It got so bad at one point he was puking. I would say if the lungs sound fine and an inhaler doesn't work, keep in mind that sometimes pneumonia can only be detected by an x-ray that shows mucus in the lungs (which could be something else entirely).

my 2yr old son recently started the coughing at night... i took him to the doc and she said just seasonal allergies, then another doc said bronchitis... honestly idk what it is. and i can honestly say nothing has helped him.. over the counter or prescription meds.  The only thing that has helped some is i put him in light weight long sleeved pjs and turn a fan on low to circulate air and every once in a while when it gets real bad i give him a little warm tea with peppermint about an hour before bed.  it seems to help some but not always.

I'm happy I found this website I thought we were alone in this situation, my 3 year old son has had cough attacks since he was months old, his pediatrician has prescribed so much medicine for him he has been on abuterol, xopenex, atrovet, cingulair and nothing has helped him the doc says he has asthma but non of this medication has helped my son or controlled his cough, he coughs until he vomits mucus its so horrible and I'm sure you all can relate to this, those medicines have made him so fussy, angry, hipper his behavior is so bad I'm beyond frustrated and I feel so helpless just seeing my baby go through all of this and nothing helps him, during the day he is fine no cough the only thing is that his mood is always changing and I know that is the side affects of all the meds he is on, I have tried so much these past months home remedies you name it I've tried it and nothing seems to help him. Tuesday we have an appointment with a pulmonoligst I pray I can get answers and they help my son, I wish everyone the best and pray that you can find something that helps and relieves the cough to your little ones they have suffered so much and it breaks my heart reading about all we have gone through with our children :( good luck and I will post about my visit.

Thanks :)

My son is 2 and has been coughing at night for a while now the pediatric  seems too busy to know what's Wrong. However, I noticed that our central a/c and ceiling fans have to be off at night or he coughing gets worse. Also if he plays outside in the pool or waterslide it

Provokes the cough.

keep him away from cold first of all..and secondly, away from dusty and smoky areas. let him have ginger and honey till he recovers. if it doesnt help, go to the doctor because coughing can be the symptom of any disease.

My son's night coughing also started after a one day fever. This was a few weeks after getting vaccinated for whopping cough. he's had a slightly runny nose since.

As with "almost dad" our 2 year old has the same symtpons and we too have the same season with the heater and mold. Thanking God we will be leaving the trailer in couple of days. Also to note....if the heater does not run a whole lot through the night we all do not wake up to her coughing fit. Now if its serious cold and the heater is working overtime she will hack from 3 to 4am until she gets that moucus up.

My 2 year old daughter is having coughing spells at night also. They get so bad it sounds like the whooping cough. I took her to the doctor yesterday and she has strep throat and that's typical for her she has had it like 10 times already, but this type of cough is new. It is only at night right before she goes to sleep and sometime in the night she will wake from a coughing spell. It scares me so bad cause it's hard for her to breath. Any suggestions? I am scheduling her an appointment for the ENT doctor to discuss getting her tonsils out because of strep throat.

Has anyone figured out why this has happened to their child? What about enlarged adenoids? My 3-1/2 year old is going through the same thing now. Please tell me what ended up being the diagnosis and what to do. Its been over a month of this.

Is this still working for you? What kind of toothpaste should we switch to? Also, could it be caused from enlarged adenoids? Thanks

My 3 year old is also suffering with a dry cough mostly when she tries to sleep... Naps & bed time. We have been told asthma and she has been using a nebulizer since November. She was hospitalized about a week before Christmas because of a coughing fit that sent us to the ER and then a low oxygen level. We spent 3 days in the hospital and I have missed 15 days of work since September. She stopped coughing for about 2 weeks and now the cough is back so its Budesinide and Albuterol all over again. I sit here listening to her cough and wonder if we will end up back in the hospital again and if I will soon lose my job because the doctors cant fix this for my poor girl! My 6 month old son has been coughing since 2 months old and the Dr's say its acid reflux and asthma... We have been instructed to see a gastroenterologist for him this coming Thursday-wonder what magic this Dr will propose. Im womdering why there is no answer to whats causing this problem for so many children and why arent our children important enough for the doctors to figure out the problem and fix it! Sorry, Im just so frustrated.... I hate having to drug my kids and hate that they may be suffering at the hands of a bunch of overpaid people that are suppose to help them get better!
