Thank you for the post.  This was right on point.  I'm on day 8 and I agree.  I have had slightly less pain than described but my nights are HORRIBLE.  One additional point:  a heating pad works wonders.  I always have the heating pad wrapped around my throat and, at night, my ears.  The heating pad plus the meds take away almost all of the pain.

Wow!!! I am having the same isssue. The weird thing is it seems worse in the winter months, not sure if it is because of the dryness. I wake up in the middle of night coughing them out. It grosses me out. I also use a ling ear cleaner and sterlize it to clean my tonsils out. I check my tonsils everyday. I am going to doctora in few weeks for annual physical and I am going to let her know what a nuisance these are. I am worries to have surgery. I am 33 year old female. I have had 3 kids, so I know what pain is. I am also really mucousy and not sure if it is from these little things. I clear my throat constantly and guzzle water. So not sure if it related. Do u remember being mucousy???

I had my tonsills removed two weeks ago, what helped me with the mucous build up was gargling with water and peroxide. My dr told me to gargle after each meal, worked great for me.
Good luck.

Thanks so much for writing this all up, it really does help. I'm on day 15 and beginning to think it will never end. Still have huge white scabs and very sore on both sides. Arrgh! So thanks for letting me know this can be normal, as I'm not scheduled to see the Dr. for another week. My tonsils were huge as well, and I'm 56 years old so likely heal slower than you.

I'm having my tonsillectomy in a few weeks and having gone through all the numerous posts about it I have to say this is the best one I've written and it's helping me mentally prepare for this.

I have pretty serious tonsil stones and the main reason I am getting this operation is to get rid of these smelly b******s, I long for fresh breath! I know it will be worth it even if the pain is gonna be agony.

Thanks for this post, it's excellent though my worst fear is bleeding after the operation, how do you know if you are in danger of bleeding out?? It terrifies me thinking I could be bleeding to death without realizing it! Sorry if it sounds stupid but any advice would be appreciated? And isn't yogurt bad to have as I imagine that will make your throat quite phlegmy as well?

Bless you! Thank you for this. Just like you, I have been wanting to hear another person's story. I am convinced now. My breath gets me depressed. Sometimes I just stay in the toilet, almost breaking down, not knowing what else to do, and hiding from people who may have a conversation with me. With my god awful breath, I don't want to speak to anyone as much as they don't want to smell my breath. I don't even walk with the posture that I used to. I walk looking down, avoiding eye contact with anyone. I only speak to people if its absolutely necessary. Oh, and I forgot to mention... I am in sales! I get paid to speak and sell to people....... The procedure is sure worth the 2 weeks of suffering. I have however heard of recurrences after surgery. Any ideas on that? And what exactly was the procedure used in your tonsillectomy?

I got my tonsils removed four days ago. Like you, I had problems with tonsil stones quite often. Other than the pain (which is a 5/10 when I'm NOT crying due to my brother making fun of me), the only problem I really have is the mucus. It's disgusting and I spit so much out a day. Not to mention, the sh*t is black. Personally, I found this really helpful (which is good since I have a very LOW pain tolerance), and I thank you very much for posting it.

This was very helpful because I am on day 4 of recovery and still have not experienced too much pain but now I can be prepared for more to come. The only thing though, you NEED to cough and clear your throat. My doctor said I need to every 30 minutes to help the lungs. Also to do some deep breathing everyday. I see a lot of posts about pain pills, ask your doctor for liquid painkillers so that you can swallow more easily.

Wow what a story. I would have to say that everyone is different however. I am on day 4 of my tonsillectomy and I didn't have anywhere near the problems you had. My pain was the worst the day of surgery and got better from there. I would say I have definitely had worse surgeries and this one wasn't so bad. I never got sick or had anything fall off and bleed. But, my doctor used a laser, maybe yours didn't, I'm not sure. I am considering going to work tomorrow.

Hi I am on day 3 of having tonsils out, and I am still waiting for this pain everyone talks about. So far my iv in the beginning has been the worst. After waking up after surgery I panicked a little bit not knowing where I was, and had a hard time breathing for a bit, but that got better after about 20 mins. I ate ice chips right away cause my mouth was dry and slept till they discharged me a few hours later. I am at home now on day 3 and been taking my meds regularly every 4 hours. I 28 years old and so far am taking it pretty good. I have te scabbinh in my throat but my pain so far has been no more than a 2 and 10 being the worst. I have been sleeping A LOT and just been staying hydrated. I try to drink something every half and hour and I are jello, mashed potatoes and soup. I am sure I can eat more but just playing it safe so far cause all of these horror stories. I also got a deviated septum fixed at same time and have tubes in my nose but those either are not painful. So wish me luck and I wish all of you best of luck you will feel like this also!

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with a tonsillectomy. I Am only on day 2, and I can safely say that your pain scale is accurate. I am dreading tomorrow and the next day, but luckily, my boyfriend doesn't have to work those days, and can keep me company.

My medication isn't pills; they actually gave me a syringe (sort of like the one you get for Wisdom Teeth surgery), and I have to squirt 4ml of the painkiller into my mouth. It doesn't taste entirely awful, but it's not the best.
I was also prescribed a numbing gargle. It doesn't taste bad, actually. In fact, it tastes quite good... minty! Like mouthwash. But the act itself of gargling is rather hard. The scabs in my throat are huge, and my uvula looks as if it has been swelled to about twice its normal size, plus the scabs are sticking to it as well. Like you said, the worst feeling is throwing up, and since my uvula is so big, if I burp, cough, or even gargle, I WILL throw up. It is very difficult. Sometimes, I manage to gargle half of the prescribed amount for only 10 seconds, as opposed to 30. But when I do, I notice I feel like I have a bit more room in the back of throat. Is that just the numbing, or do you think it's helping break down the scabs?

I know the pain is going to get a lot worse, and I do not take physical pain well; in fact, I am kind of a wimp. But I do agree with you, this completely beats having to reach back into your nasty smelling throat to squeeze out tonsil stones. All I am looking forward to is when I can eat pizza again.
