Look up sleep paralysis. It’s exactly what you describe. You wake up unable to move, and you sense a dark spirit. Happens to me often. Just know you’re okay, it’s just a weird phenomenon of the brain. Try not to sleep on your back as it happens more that way.

I'm really concern and no one did give me an answer or a true diagnose for this. I have everything you just described and it started 3 years ago I have been doing sports and I'm fit and 24 I hope it's something we can fix and not something serious.

Have you ever consulted somebody from sleep wake disorder dept. ? Have you ever heard of a sleep apnea disorder where the body while asleep is not properly breathing therefore not enough oxygenation of blood because in your sleep maybe you have episodes of stopped breathing. I am not sure about it but there is nothing wrong to go for the test.

I would suggest you go to a sleep clinic for a sleep study. I have never had one done so i am not sure exactly what they do but the jist of it is that you sleep there a couple times and they monitor you, i think they connect some monitors near your heart to see if you are breathing during the night or if your breathing changes during the night. If you have sleep apnea they will fit you with an oxygen device to wear while sleeping to keep you breathing properly through the night. I am not sure if insurance will cover it but usually insurance covers tests that are ordered/referred by your primary doctor. If insurance doesnt cover it explain it to the clinc before you get the test done and ask if they can work out a payment installment plan for you. I am sure this condition is difficult to live with, i am saying a prayer for you that you get the right andwers and treatment you need to get your sleeping patterns back to normal and waking up feeling refreshed. Best wishes.

when any body part goes numb, it means that the nerve supply to that area has been cut off. So your hands going numb while you sleep means that some nerve that goes from your neck to the hand is being compressed. Nerves have their own blood supply around the outside, so pressure on a nerve cuts off that blood supply and the nerve eventually is starved for oxygen and nutrients, making the nerve shut down. If this happens for a short period of time, the nerve just wakes up again once the pressure is removed. However, continued insult on the nerve can mean that it gets a little damaged with each episode. So months or years of numb hands at night can mean damaged nerves.
What usually causes this to happen? The biggest and most significant cause is neck (cervical) stenosis or a disc bulge, or when there’s little room in the neck bones due to arthritis or that disc for the nerves to travel or exit. You don’t have to have constant neck pain with stenosis or a disc bulge and some patients just notice that their hands are numb. When the neck gets into a weird position at night and the muscles that protect it during the day relax, the nerves get crunched and the hands go numb. Many times a cervical collar worn only at night will reduce the numbness. You may need to experiment with different collars or varying amounts of tightness (usually wearing it loosely while sitting at the side of the bed is enough, as the shoulders come up when you sleep and this makes the collar tighter). If this helps your hands, you likely need a cervical MRI to check this out.
The second biggest cause is thoracic outlet syndrome or TOS. This means that the nerves are getting crunched in the shoulder area. This is a common problem for modern computer users, as the shoulder and head come forward leading to nerve compression. There are some stretches in a book called "Orthopedics 2.0" for this issue. Other causes can include carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrists. This is when the main nerve of the hand (median nerve) gets pinched in the tunnel that it traverses in the wrist. It can cause numbness in your hands, wrists, and fingers while you sleep, and also travel up your arm and shoulder. I have been an administrative assistant for years and i think i have this in my fingers and hands because i have woken up with numb hands and fingers, but that usually only happens when i fall asleep on my sofa so it is possible that maybe your mattress or pillow needs to be replaced. My daughter is a hair dresser and started waking up with sore neck, and numbness which was job related and she got a bunch of tests done and found she had bulging and deteriorating disks. i found a special pillow for her online that is designed for people with neck problems and she said the pillow made a difference along with replacing her mattress and making dietary changes as well as some specific orthopedic stretches recommended for her. Diet can be a factor if you have disk issues because low carb diets are better for relieving pain and inflammation. Maybe you shoukd consider making an appointment with an orthopedic doctor to get some spine and neck x-rays. If it is something simple like carpal tunnell, simple wrist splints worn at night can be a huge help.

I have got almost the same problem. Only my face numbs.
I almost fell asleep, even dreaming, and then BOOM!
I am awake... Not just like the dizzyness awake in the morning, but totally awake. I can not fall back asleep for hours.
It doesen't matter how tired I am. I can do hard work all day long, it can be happen again.
I can't find any disorder on the internet like ours. The closest disorder is the hypnic jerk but i can't feel any jerking muscle, except the numbing face, mainly around the lips.

I have normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), and a shunt was implanted. Shunt setting is 5, and has not been checked since.
When I fall asleep when lying down, e.g., after going to bed, it is hard to move hands upon awakening. Is that a normal side effect?

I'm a 15 years old boy. I have trouble sleeping and eating. When I wake up in the morning, my pillow is full of my hair. When I brush it, about 200 to 300 hairs come out. Can anyone tell me what's going on with me?
