I don't see why anyone would care, it's not like you are going to the super to get groceries.
I was in for an upper GI series once and they had me sitting in a waiting room in a hospital robe. There were several women in there too and I was getting strange looks from a couple of them opposite me. The next day it dawned on me why. Not being a girl I was not accustomed to preventing people from looking up my skirt and I guess they were not happy about being able to see what they were seeing. Like I give a sxxt anyway.
When I was awaiting heart bypass they sent in a teeny bopper to give me a complete body shave. She had me lie on my stomach with the robe on while she did my back then had me flip over and she helped me out of the robe. So I'm laying there naked in a shared room with people coming and going for the other patients while she lathered me up and shaved away, starting at my neck. When she got to my pubic hair she said with surprise we need a little modesty here, as she put a towel over those parts. Then she proceded to fold it over to one side to shave under it. I had all I could do to keep from laughing at her.
When the surgery was over I had tubes in me every where including where I was happy I was not awake when they snaked it in. Also everything down there looked black and blue but I discovered it was painted dark brown including under my foreskin. I doubt a doctor did that so I suspect it was a female nurse who did the painting and the snaking. It was female nurse who pulled that out the day I went home.
None of that bothered me but before the operation I had to take a shower using some special soap and they sent a male nurse to assist me with the shower. That kind of gave me the creeps.
yes, you absolutely can and more - demand your rights to wear underwear and bra if your surgery is not on your private areas, it is your right; I did wear bra and underwear during hand surgery and threatened them in writing on all consent forms with sexual assault charges if my bra or/and panties removed or moved in any way to expose my private parts of body
Ultimately it's up to the PATIENT! There is nothing sanitary about the gown, cap or booties you are given. When are patients going to stop acting like children? It is your body, your decision. I read these remarks with comments like the nurse/doctor "let me" do this or that, I was "allowed" to wear my underwear, etc. this is just plain ridiculous. For God's sake people, stand up for yourselves. Get yourself educated about what happens before hand. Ask questions. READ the consent form at least a WEEK before your surgery and respond to the form with what you will and won't consent to. STOP acting like ignorant sheep going to the slaughter house. YOU are the decision arbitrator, not the nurse. I read these posts by nurses that MY patients in MY facility do things My way. Where is your backbone? YOU are the final decision maker, not them. These paternalistic attitudes are slowly changing but the continuation of remarks like you can't wear underwear because we MIGHT need access down there are totally innane. A lot of surgeries are now done in ambulatory surgery centers that are not required to have all of the same life saving equipment as a hospital. If something goes wrong your butt is being shipped off to the nearest ER. If you're wearing underwear and thet need access they will simply cut them off. Otherwise there is NO REASON to remove underwear unless that area is the focus of the surgery or will be included in the prep
Sorry - the only people who get to keep their underwear on during surgery are the doctors, nurses and all the other staff in the room with you on the day - NOT YOU!
You will be fully naked. Sorry to say. I know a young girl who woke up completely naked even after just having an operation on her finger!!
This is why you are forced to have no underwear on under your hospital gown and why the ties are easy to get access to. Basically, the gown is just there to cover you up while you are transported from the waiting area to the operation room. Once you are in there, they will drug you so that you are fully asleep. Once you are asleep, the gown comes completely off.
This is because they need to put monitor pads on your breasts to listen to your heart. They then insert a cathedar into your vagina so that if you need to pee, you can even while you are asleep. They will probably wash your entire naked body down in betadine too, to keep it free from germs and bacteria.
They say that the doctors are all modest and care for your modesty and dignity, this is party true. They will care about it while you are awake so you dont feel too uncomfortable. Once you are asleep they no longer care, as they know that you won't know, or ever remember.
The bottom line is - there will probably be about 6-8 doctors, nurses and admin staff in the room once you are asleep (others may come in and out too - as other staff have full access to roam around between the op rooms), so it's possible that another 3-4 could walk in and out during your op. ALL of these people will see you completely naked during this time - but you'll never know.
I know we should feel fine about this, as they are doctors (Oh - yes, there may also be a few students in there too) - but at the end of the day ... They are also men - so .. be assured. They will certainly get a good eyeful; It's not right. There should be something done about it.
Once the op is completed. they will then have an orderely (normally a male), will come and get you (you're still asleep). He then will wheel you off to a little room where you will stay to recover and wake up. In this room other staff will clean the betadine off your naked body. They will clean you up, remove the pads from your breasts, and take the cathedar out of your vagina. They will then put a fresh clean gown on you becuase the one you had in thearte probably got blood or saline solution on it.
By the way - the room where you wake up in could be quite open and next to an admin area where a bunch of people are working and doing paperwork. You shouldn't expect too much modesty there either. The office workers and the male orderly are not trained doctors. they could be fresh out of high school.
Bottom line is - you're asleep, so you'll never know.
the short answer is - Regardless of what surgey you are having, even if you think it's only on your tummy (or even on your teeth), if you are asleep during the op, then you will probably be fully naked. the doctors say they need to have access to your heart (breasts) and other private parts - this may be true.
Have a look at some Youtube videos. I've seen some where there has been a fully naked girl (fully asleep) about to have surgery. There are about 8 people in the room. ^ are men. I played it in slow-motion and sure enough. One doctor just about tripped over some cords and stuff cause he was too busy staring at the womans breasts. He still only a man!
Sorry for the bad news - but I think we all need to be better educated. We are still living in the dark ages when it comes to hospital and patient modesty. I think it would be really easy to give girls paper pants and even a paper bra to wear. the doctors can still get access to their breasts if they have too, to put the monitors on, but they shouldn't have to lie there naked so everyone can have a good perv!
Ironically - I know some of these comments say that patients are given full respect and only uncovered for a short time. This may be true in some cases, but not all. Even then ... You are STILL uncovered for some of the time. the nurses will take your gown off and will put blankets over you. But, they dont get the men to leave the room whiel they are doing it. There could be a good 2-5 minutes where you are laying fully exposed while the nurses are unfolding the blankets. Regardless - the men get to see your fully naked body.
In my opinion. They should get the men to leave the room. the female nurses should prep you, wash your naked body, then put the blankets on you, and the monitors on your breasts and the cathader in your vagina. then, and only then should the men be allowed to enter the room. Once the op is over, the men should be asked to leave the room again, while the nurses clean you up, take the blankets and monitors off, then dress you back in your gown.
This MAY happen one day if enough people make enough noise about it. Even then. they could tell us anything. Is it true?
The bottom line is. Sorry - if your going for an op. Then expect to be naked in front of a bunch of strangers, most of which are mostly men (or male students)
I know it's streesful and causes a lot of anexiety. What can we do about it?
Of course someone had to insert a catheter but before that I think they painted me. I later discovered they had painted every square inch of my testicles and penis with that black/brown stuff. Someone had to pull my foreskin all the way back to paint in there. I bet it was a female. I bet there were plenty of females watching as a female inserted that catheter too. Do I care? Of course not, I don't care if they invited the whole secretarial staff to watch. I came away with a very successful operation and I feel great.
After having male doctors for 60 years I finally ended up with female care givers, a doctor and a nurse practitioner and it's great. When I get the ooo-ooo test their finger is a lot smaller than the male doctors and that's fine with me. When she did it the first time we both had a good laugh. She had me bent over the table and she remarked "Oh you have a nice little one". When I realized she meant my prostate I said "I was just thinking the same about your finger". Then she realized what she had said sounded like and we both laughed.
So life is a whole lot of fun if you aren't too uptight to enjoy it.
John where do you get "anti rape underpants". I want to wear those for my up coming surgery.
We can request in advance an all Female team. We can tell them we are allergic to Versed so we are not on the date-rape drug. We can have spinal anesthesia instead of General so we are awake during surgery. If our wishes are not followed we can just leave the hospital prior to surgery. We do have rights and do not have to be treated as if we are pieces of meat. Yes we can write all over our consent form, no catheter, no males of any kind in the O.R. we can talk to our doctor in advance of the surgery and make these arrangements. It is our body and it is our rights! The hospital are not full of God's and we do have rights. DO NOT GO TO A TEACHING HOSPITAL EVER!!!!
