I had the mirena put in on a Friday and by Monday I had a brown watery discharge and one of the most awful odors I ever smelled!  I have appt today with my Dr. but thinking I want this thing out.  From reading the other posts it sounds like this isn't going away until it's removed and I'm not living on antibiotics.  I had it put in because of my heavy periods so now I don't know what to do.  I hate taking the pill, makes me feel terrible and cranky.  I'll let you know what my dr. says.  Sounds like we all have the same iud symptoms.

Just went to dr. found a tampon I left behind, embarrassed but so happy problem solved easily. Ladies, if you think something is wrong you need to go to your dr. don't continue living unhappy with your physical state.

Yes, I have had the same smell. I have had it 6 months now and the smell has been here for about 2 months and it is quite embarrassing. It smells awful. And it is so strong, I can smell it through my clothes and that's gross. Also, other people are around me can smell it. When i'm around somebody, there are like, what's that smell? But i always played it off like i didn't know because it is so gross and embarrassing. I don't even want to have sex with my husband because of it and he is starting to think i don't want/like having sex with him anymore because of it. But that's not the case at all and i've tried explaining that to him, but he's not a woman so he doesn't understand the things we do. I just want this thing out and the smell to go away so i can get back to my life and to let my husband know that i still do love him sexually. I have an appointment for removal, but does the smell go away after it is removed?

Talk about wearing a dress ugh! OMFG, I have the Paragard and my p***y is so f*****g stinky. Ladies, I had sex 24hrs after insertion as directed by my doctor and boy look here. I smelt the most awful scent ever and I am a very very clean OCD person. So I bathe at least 5 times a day. ITS THE IUD'S, REGARDLESS OF WHICH ONE YOU HAVE. They both will give you a fonky monky. LOL, but I am so serious ladies. I have an apointment on Monday for a hysterectomy consultation. I don't have kids and don't want any at all. This is a serious matter for me because I am a woman who loves sex and this smell is really ruining my sex life and ladies, if you can smell yourself then you know others can too. I am going to ask the doctor on Monday if he can remove this sh*t. f**k that, I will not fall into the category of women who all the guys talk about saying, "Yeah man, I hit that p***y and it was soo f*****g stank". Yall got life screwed up if you think this is OKAY. I got Paragard on Oct. 11th and you can bet your ass that I will not have it in still by Nov. 11th.

Ok I took out my paragard 5 days ago and I feel relieved. The smell is gone, even the metallic smell that s sometimes present is gone as well. The nurse told me that a lot of women come in for that same problem. I am so happy although I miss the convenience I couldn't take the odor any longer.

I have had the IUD for a little over 7 years. I have the 5 yr one so this is my 2nd IUD. After reading everyones posts I look back and I remember getting BV myself and I had never had that before. I had never even heard of it. I had endomitriosis really bad and cysyts before I had the IUD. After I had my daughter 6 wks later I had the IUD placed. I actually had no problems at all. At least compared to the endomitriosis the IUD was a cake walk. Now I have had this second one for a little over 2 years and in the last 6 months or so I have been experiencing cramping and a little pain. I kept telling myself I was ovulating and i recently moved across the map so I thought maybe it has something to do with that. I have also noticed an odor sometimes with some white discharge at times. This all can not be coincidence that we all have the same kind of symptoms. This the best birth control that I have ever had but when I first moved I noticed light spotting which that hadn't happened in years and this cramping is happening more often. I'm just scarred to take it out because the endomitriosis hurt so bad I know that I couldn't handle it and I think I was tougher then. I don't know what to do I don't know any doctors here and I have been a cna dor 13 years so I don't trust just any doctor. I am glad that I read that others have these problems as well...

i have had my 10yr IUD for about 5 yrs now and never had any "major" concerns until about a year ago. i started smelling the odor through my pants and it was so off putting i literally got nauseous and felt sick. then i started getting a bad itchy feeling and if i scratched it i would swell up around the area and it hurt like hell. made my life miserable! i was told i have BV twice since this started but the meds never seem to work longer then a week. ive done the whole 9 when it comes to home remedies. nothing seems to work! my doc also told me it was not from the IUD but it is the only thing i can think of that makes any sense. i am a clean person who has had the same partner for 3 years who thank god is very understanding of my situation. but understanding or not it has def started to cause some separation between us! not cool at all so i made another apt to go back get checked 1 more time and if it comes out to be BV again im going to request her to remove the IUD on spot. this is ruining my life. im embarrassed when i shouldn’t have to be and my vagina hurts damn it..... it's time to make a change and put a stop to it. thank you ladies for all your comments, i feel allot better knowing that it's not just me and im not completely alone in this. now i see that some of you have made the choice to remove the IUD and although i know you say it felt better after you removed it.... how has it been long term? has your BV come back at all or are you still experiencing any of the same issues since???????????????

Hi ladies,

I had this exact same problem after having mirena implanted 10 months ago.  I recently went back to my GP as I could not stand it anymore and she did a swab test which showed I had a candida infection that I had no other signs of so did not suspect this.  She treated me with a tablet of canesoral oral as wel as the 3 day thrush cream which is inserted plus a month of inner health plus tablets.  It has been a couple of weeks and touch wood it seems to have cleared up.  I am still taking inner health plus tabs.   I am certainly no doctor but this treatment is all available over the counter so may be worth a try.  Good luck!

I"m just so relieved to know that I'm not alone.  I have been having this awful fishy, sometimes metallic, sometimes rotten smell coming from my vagina and vaginal discharge and I KNOW that it is the Mirena.  I'm a clean 31 year old woman and I know how to take care of myself.  I've never smelled like this before.  Also, know the difference between a vaginal yeast infection and BV and this sure as hell aint it!  The smell is putrid and only seems to be getting worse not better.  I had my baby in March, had the IUD inserted in May, and here it is the end of November and I still stink!  I went back to the doctor a month or two after having it placed for them to yank the damn thing out because it was causing me so much distress and the doctor all but made me feel like a lunatic.  She said she'd been doing her job for a very long time and had never had this type of complaint.  She kept saying that over and over again as if to say that I was either crazy or just milking "the system" (being that I'm an army wife and the cost was covered to have it placed).  I bit my tongue because I wanted to rip her head off.  Obviously if I had the damn thing placed a couple of months ago, it's because I don't want kids right now.  I was sooooo excited to get it.  Long story short, she swabbed me and sure enough, I was clean as a whistle (no stds, no yeast infection or ANY kind of infection) and she still pushed antibiotics on me!  Stupid doctors...  We women know our bodies better than anyone.  I'm getting this thing removed.  It's not staying in not another month!  I just hope we are not all part of some sappy commercial a few years from now where we're suing the makers of Mirena cause it did irreparable damage!  I pray that won't be the case and I hope this smell disappears soon after I get this thing out of me.  Good luck to you all.

I have had my IUD for 7 months. I live in the Caribbean , and I thought maybe the heat of the tropics had something to do with the foul smell, but hearing you ladies speak I realize it must be the IUD itself. From day one of insertion I started smelling a really nasty scent and the scent seem to have gotten worst over the months. During and after sex the scent seems to intensify and the odor is in the air, it's very embarrassing. I am going to be tested tomorrow for all STI's and then get treatment if they are positive, if I have BV I will get that treated and have the IUD removed. I swear my co workers can smell me whenever I walk near them.
