Mine is exactly like yours except I've went thru this for so many years that I haven't seen anything that is consistent to say that any one thing is triggering it and mine happens day and night randomly.

MIne is on right side also. Seems to be only when I stretch or turn differently. Did you find out what it is yet?

It sounds like perhaps there are two different types of cramping going on with those who have posted here: Those that are localized and possibly associated with the abdominal wall or surgical site, and those affecting the diaphragm muscles between the lungs and ribs.  Mine are the latter type and most often follows a heavy bit of laughter.  The cramps not only cause intense pain throughout my entire ribcage but some difficulty in breathing while the cramping persists.  My cramps usually last no more than 20 minutes.

I would wonder if those with pain in the abdomen, especially those with prior surgery or hernia in that area aren't having spasms where the muscle may be restricted by scar tissue.  It would make sense that such a thing would make the cramps to be more severe due to the pulling on the scar tissue.

I support the notion that many of us are likely having cramping or spasm problems related to dehydration or a mineral deficiency.  I have wondered if the problem is exasperated by a weakness of the surround muscles due to a lack of exercise specific to those areas or possibly being overweight.

Good luck to all here.  You are not alone.

For those of you poor folks with the most severe instances of this cramping problem, please continue to do research.  Do a google search or one on this site about Angina Pectoris and related conditions, especially if you are having these symptoms while at rest.  You may very well have some sort of vascular constrictions causing the pain.  Good luck!

I am so happy to see this blog. I have have this spasm in my LUQ(left upper quadrant) for three years for no apparent reason. BNo abdomen surgeries until Dec., 2012 when the surgean went into the right side laparascopically and took out fat (lipoma) and supposedly fixed a hernia in my umbilical area. That did not help AT ALL. I HAD ANOTHER SURGERY jUNE, 2013, this surgeaon made two and a half inch incisions on my left abdomen and I am in worse shape because he did not do a lapacopy; just mutilated my abdomen. Now I get spasms from bending over and constant pain. I also am healing from his mutilation to where he took out more fat. I have a protuberant abdomen; but only one stomach, not doubled. He could have taken twins from the first incision; did not even use a camera. UGH! I take carispodal which stop the spasm immediately but I am left with soreness for two to three days.

I have have Cat scans, Mri's, x-rays, and I also have a seperation of the abdomen muscles;

which would require a tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck. I believe the doctors know this but don't want to address the issue because I am a black female, over 60, with an assertive attitude and well-informed NOW with my medical records in hand.

I am going to see a Eastern medical professional because I knpw longer trust American doctors of any nationality. They only want to keep practicing to make more money and are not concerned with healing or solving the problem

Well I just had to join in since I too have had these severe cramps and knots in random areas of my abdominal and back area. This has got to be the worst pain other than childbirth that I personally have ever encountered. Since I also believe that it is not normal to have this bad of pain and it has to be something serious. I have been doing some reading on MMS (Jim Humble) and also Bentonite Clay and Diatomaceous. After researching a few of the benefits of transdermal and  internal consumption I thought why not give the clay a try. Before I had even gotten into these sites I started thinking of all the movement in my abdominal area as being alive. I would be sitting down and feel the movement move across my gut as if to be headed for a destination of familularity like whatever it was, was heading home and taking my organs with it, once they quit moving my pain would start to subside. Okay, I know what you may be thinking ! Now, I am a woman and not a fan of scif, but if you yourself feel this I believe it may have crossed your mind. It has come to my attention that some Dr's can not or do not address the facts that we have parisites in our bodies due to the fact that they do not know how to treat them and think we are delusional . We are born with them from way down the line of our ancestors. Why is it that since we have these muscle pain and severe pain to say the least and we really have no answer as to what it could be other than another mystery diagnosis. I am now doing the Bentonite clay treatment and put it in capsules so not to taste the residue. I read all the facts and testimonies there is available on a list of conditions and when I got to parasites I knew I had to address the fact that they live in a bile environment and that one parasite can hatch one million eggs in a lifetime. I was told I would have to do this bentonite Clay for some time since it is a task ,but it will get rid of them. Answers we have none really at this point and I feel that if this happens to relieve the problems I am having in the slightest relief of the forever knotting cramps then I will have done my best to share this. If it does not help stop the cramping, at least I have detoxed my body of heavy metals, bad bacteria and pathogens. I wish everyone can find relief from this horrible pain. I would like to add that I stand against a wall with arms extended and push it with back arched to subdue the pain when I get them ...Bye for now and Good Luck to you all. You were my inspiration after reading we were not alone in this. :) Lind

Hi Cookie, It sounds like you have been through a lot and sorry for that happening. I too have been from Dr.'s that want nothing to do with the treatment of what health is all about. I trust no Dr. that hands me a pill to subside the pain and send me home. I have been juicing and doing my holistic regimen and the cramping is still there (severe) As I said in my post below, I have taken to believe the Jim humble protocol to helping my self with my issues and have only started 2 wks ago. I hope you find what works and share you progress or your just keep reading here since the group may have found out why these are happening for no reason. Good Luck and God Bless ! Linda

I'd love a definitive answer, but I'll settle for not being the only one to whom this happens! It's been going on for about a year or more, and is getting somewhat worse.  If I bend over while in a sitting position--omg, on a scale of 1 to 10, pain can go to 11.  Same if I sneeze while seated.  It takes at least 15 seconds to subside, and feels like something in my upper abdomen, usually on the left side, is being totally twisted.  I did mention it to my MD, who suggested it's from weight gain -- I gained all of 5 to 7 lbs. since previous visit and I'm not overweight, so I don't believe that's the cause.  I'll be following to see if there are any new insights on this board.

Hi there, i realise i'm a little late in replying to this but I've just stumbled upon this site whilst researching the web for my problem and i have to say I am relieved to see I'm not alone in this. my pain is always on the upper left side, just under the ribcage, and it usually hits me when I bend down or twist - eg in a yoga class! the pain is unbearable and I have to stop what I'm doing immediately and either bend in the opposite direction or just try to breathe to ease the pain away. It stared after I had my son, after an emergency C-section, and I am convinced it's to do with that..some sort of a tear in my abdominal muscles. My core strength is very poor and whilst I am trying to strengthen it, i get frustrated that it's not improving faster..I had ultrousound of the abdominal region and they found no abnormalities, I have asked a number of yoga teachers about it after the spasms occurred during the practice, but no one knows anything about it and they just tell me to keep the breathing going! i will try to keep up with plank positions and all, maybe eat more bananas is Pottasium is a possible answer, but it is absolutely horrendous when it happens..

Well Guest I did recognize that when I took magnesium and then a bath with about two cups in the water I didn't have them for a couple of days and that could be some reason as to why I felt better even doing my simple things like bending to tie my shoes. Then again it did happen a few days later. I have them every day so this may have helped to keep them from happening. I am going to continue doing this. You can't take too much Magnesium since most people are pretty much deficient in magnesium because our food lack this from poor quality of soil our foods are grow in. I hope you the best in finding a cure as I will be letting it be known when I have actually done this on a regular basis for sometime to see how I fair. Good Luck....

It was great finding this site and finding out that I'm not alone! it started out of the blue a couple years ago and scared me so bad that I thought something had ruptured and I went to the ER. It starts as a weird pain in my upper left ab area continues to progress to fluttering then spasms then severe Charlie horse, sweat profusely loose color and end up on the floor in the fetal position, laying on my stomach in bed seems to help, but is real sore for days afterward. They have tested me for everything GERD, ulcers, liver, stomach and all other organs but everything is good. No rhyme or reason to what makes it happen, bending just right getting into the car or even bent over in the shower etc. my GP gave me loritab and flexeral the ER said my system was backed up, but nobody has an answer. Still searching!
