Hi everyone - I am scheduled to have a hystorectomy in 4 weeks and I have done nothing but WORRY TO DEATH the first thing I worry about is the weight gain, of course the interenet search is all negative which does not help. I am 5"2" and weight 108 always been small built and never had to worry about my weight. I am getting hot flashes, anxiety and was told after surgury it will get worse. So I have researched and found that there is herbal medicine which I plan to start on for hormone replacement, I sure hope that I do not gain the weight - does anyone have any answers do we have to always be watching what we eat after this surgury. Can anyone tell me that you loose weight instead of gaining?? Thanks for listening

There are a lot of scary hysterectomy stories out there. I found this site to be the most positive, helpful site. I wish I'd found it before I had my hysterectomy because I was so worked up that a week before my surgery, my blood pressure was so high I had to go on meds! I had my hysterectomy on December 4th and I have lost 10 pounds. I asked my surgeon if my weight loss was typical. She looked surprised and said if that was the case, there'd be women forming a line for hysterectomies. Well, I may be wrong about it but I weigh less now than I did before!

I don't think having a hysterectomy means you WILL gain weight. I no longer feel bloated and I think I had a lot of fluid building up in me prior to surgery. My abdomen was distended pre-surgery and now I wear pants 4 sizes smaller than before (before: size 14 petite; now: a size 10 petite). I think weight gain creeps up on us whether or not we've had a hysterectomy.

For "guest1111" were you taking Lupron? Is that why you're having hot flashes? I know other women who've had hysterectomies and they didn't gain weight. Right now, instead of worrying about gaining weight, please try to calm yourself and don't look beyond your surgery. Let's get you healing and then you can deal with any weight concerns, okay?

I am glad I found this site to hear some positive feedback, I am not on any medication, I cannot tolorate prescribed medication, my hot flashes are form menopause, which I'm told get worse after a hysterectomy. Does anyone know if that is so?? I plan to eat healthy lots of veggies and fruit and excerise, which I already do. There are herbal rememdies that I willtake to try to calm the meopause symtoms. one of the worse is no sleep I get 3 hrs of sleep a night and have to get up to go to work at 5am, life is so challeging in so many ways. The reason I have to have the surgury is I am in non-stop pain everyday and am a high risk cancer patient, it runs in my family. Ive been divorced for 4 years have not been sexually active, I was blessed with two children now living alone but I do hope one day to meet my solemate if there is such a thing, but I hope that the hysterectomy does not affect our sex life?? I pray for all women going through daily pain, and challeges we are faces with.

Hi guest 1111...I had a hysterectomy just this past summer and im 40 yrs old...I couldn't feel any better, I had endometriosis and was in constant pain and bloating. I actually have lost weight since, I think all the bloating and bowel problems from before. I drink soy milk everyday in my cereal, and have not had any hotflashes in 3 months. I did get a scare however, I went for a mammogram last week and was told that soy can cause breast cancer ..my mammogram was fine by the way. I did do so research on a link between breast ca and soy but I have found alot of positives and that soy may actually "reduce" cancer risk, I'm thinking mayb the soy might be more dangerous for women who are still producing their own estrogen, I had a complete hysterectomy, no ovaries, so no hormones. Also intercourse has been GREATLY improved, which worried me before my surgery, because I was NEVER in the mood prior to surgery, but now...big difference. Hope I helped you...take care and God Bless!!!

I found out this week I will be having a full hysterectomy soon. Was hoping it would be vaginal, but will be cut. They also want a oncologist in the room to make sure there is no cancer lingering in the mess that appears to be my uterus. Has this happened to anyone else? I was tested for ovarian cancer and the numbers look ok, but my doctor wants to make sure and is being very cautious. I have put this surgery off since 2004 and now I have to go. I am 50 and was hoping I would get to the other side without surgery, but my uterus keeps growing - look about 4 months pregnant now the doctor says - and I am so uncomfortable. Terrible pain during my period now and IBS is horrible too. I am always exhausted, unfocused, and depressed - which is so not me. I pray this surgery helps. I am so worried about the weight gain. My doctor told me that his patients gain 10 pounds after surgery. :-( I was hoping I would lose because of all this bloating. I walk about 5 miles several times a week. Does anyone know how long it will take before I can get back to this kind of exercise? Thanks for all your help. I just want this over with!

Hello well I have been buiding up a great work up - just worring I think all these wonderful people have made me look at this whole hysterectomy surgury in a more positive way. I have been on natural estragen I take herbal supplements for just about everything, so I was planning to continue taking after surgury for a few weeks then go have my estragen level taken to see if its the right level to see if it is ok to be on these supplements or if I need take somethin stronger bio-identity. Is anyone on this medication currently have not heard much of it or it side effects. I am happy to hear from all of you wonderful women that we are all kind of going through similar situations. :-) thanks again

I had a vaginal hysterectomy in August 2010. This was the best thing I could ever have done for myself. Since the surgery almost 6 months ago I am 25lbs lighter and feeling great. The post op wasn't too bad, the only issue was gas pains that lasted about two weeks.
I have been on Premarin since October 2010 and that has stopped all the menopausal systems. I was hesitant at first to take hormone medication but it has made a significant difference. So, any of you ladies comptimplating surgery, I highly recommend it, I haven't felt this good in about 25 years. :-D

Thank you for the information on the Premarin. There is so much information to take in right now. I wish I could have a vaginal hys, but my doc says it is not possible for me. Also, he wants the oncologist to take a look, so they have to open me up. :-( Not sure if I can wait until 3/28 - very uncomfortable with this pressure and bloating. I have felt miserable with all this female stuff for so long, I pray I feel great afterwards as well and your information about losing weight is so encouraging. That worries me a lot. I wonder if it makes a difference if you have a vaginal vs abdominal, I guess it would just be your down time. Sounds like I won't be able to work out as I do now (walk 5 miles several times a week) for a couple of months or so. Do you know why you lost weight? Hormone change? Or maybe you just felt better and you were more active? Maybe the Premarin? Sorry for all the questions. I have so much anxiety with my upcoming surgery. Wish it was over! I hope I lose weight too!!

Hi jasonsmom - not too worry I'm sure the dr knows whats best, I am going to have vaginal hys this Friday Feb 25th and yes I am worried to death but I know that if we set our minds to doing something we will, I don't want to gain weight either have always been petite and weighted 105 I am 54 yrs old and I will eat right and excersie when I am able to do so again. In the meantime I have been walking everyday for 20 mins - I don't want to have to take hormone replacements but if I have to I plan to take herbal which contains soy, Sometimes life challages are not easy but its better to go through surgury and get better than the alterantive. You will be fine be possitive :-) I will pray for you and me and all the other women that go through this surgury. Keep us posted as I will it helps us all understand, I will let you know how it goes. Take care

I am scheduled for a hysterectomy on March 16,2011 and I have read on google about the weight gain and as some of you have mentioned I am freaking out. I am considering cancelling the surgery. I am having one ovary removed along with uterus due to a polycystic ovary and a failed ablasion (removal of uterine lining). I can not lose weight to save my life no matter how much I restrict calorie intake, workout, eat a balanced diet...nothing works. My doctors are all in shock of how much I do to lose weight and how much my body refuses to let it go. I have had blood work done more times then I can count and everything comes back normal. I am literally sitting here as I type this sobbing, shaking, having a panic attack about this weight gain thing. I can not afford to gain any weight and the fact that I have seen that people are gaining 16-20 lbs after surgery is making me almost pick up the phone and cancel this surgery. I have seen a lot of people say it started about 8 months after the surgery. I have read alot of these reponses and see that many of you have lost weight and also not to read google bc it will freak you out! You are correct in that! I am curious how some of you are doing a yr out from surgery and so on. If any of you can reply that would be great and maybe I won't cancel the surgery! :'(

I am wondering how the Guest 1111 did with her surgery yesterday. I hope it went well for you. You were so positive, so I think that helps so much. Mommywifey3 don't cancel. I had a failed ablasion too. i know I have to do this, but it is so scary. I can not imagine gaining weight after all this bloating I have. I think we will lose weight at first because of the surgery. I have started counting calories now and keeping up with what I am eating so I can continue this afterwards. I am just wondering if hormone treatments are why women are gaining weight. Kind of like some birth control pills can do. I am determined not to gain weight. Maybe it is a mind set and we just have to stay positive! ;-)

OMG! I too looked through the Internet for side effects from a hysterectomy, because I have heard about all the weight gain after you have a hysterectomy. I’m having the new robotics surgery were my doctor makes up to 4 incisions. I was absolutely terrified that I was going to gain a tremendously amount of weight and tell you the truth I was about to back out! I had decided I could live with the pain but not 50-60 lbs. I’m small framed, 5’3” and 120 lbs, I can’t imagine changing that much after surgery. Thank you for posting positive feedback and for teaching me a lesson about believing everything I read. On the Internet! I’m nervous enough as it is. All I can say is God bless all women!!!
