I can tell you all one thing it is enough to drive a person insane. I have a feeling that mine is from some cold medicine I am taking. Heck it says it is non drowsy but that does not mean a thing to me the stuff just knock me right out. Also it could be from not drinking enough fluids also. so all I can say is I hope some finds out some day.
I have read every article here. I can only see 2 causes so far:
1. Yeast infection in the body not just mouth and private areas, which most doctors have a hard time diagnosing if the yeast isn’t in one of these areas. Some causes of yeast infection are antibiotics which kill the good as well as the bad bacteria. .
The good bacteria keeps the yeast in a proper balance.
Another way of getting yeast infection is oral sex (male of female) with some one who has yeast problems they may be a carrier and not have symptoms.
possible solutions-(cut out foods that have yeast in them such as breads and cut way back or eliminate starchy foods (pastas…) and sweets that have sugar or turn to sugar in the body. Yeast likes sugar to help it grow. Eat yogurt which will help put good bacteria in the body. I have heard that this diet for 1+ months will help balance yeast in the body
2. Nerve damage- no suggestions
I personally am very health conscience (vegan) drink lots of water. I don’t eat meat, don't drink alcohol, don’t smoke, or eat sweets much, I take no supplements nor have I had any teeth work done. I drink lots of water 70-80 ounces per day (should be half your body weight in ounces).
I have had problems with yeast and nerve problems. I also have at times a strong salty tastes in my mouth with a burning feeling on my tongue.

Hello fellow salt-tasters,
I have been experiencing this for the past 3-4 days and have not been to a doctor yet. After reading through the posts I'm still not sure what the problem may be. I have been going through an extremely stressful and upsetting situation for the past week and was wondering if it is stress-related. I have cried more in the past week than in the past few years combined - could this have something to do with it? My tongue seems fine, the salty taste I have is in the top of my mouth right at the point it meets my throat. Nothing takes it away. I have had no recent dental work, no antibiotics, don't smoke, and drink plenty of water. I do drink wine and am on birth control pills. My appetite has been very low, nothing seems to taste right, and I've had a weird slight numbness in my lips once in a while but I'm not sure if this is from stress or the "saltwater taste." Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I too have suffered from the nasty salty taste in my mouth for a long time. Nothing worked to get rid of it. After taking 1 Allegra tablet (RX needed) the salty taste was nearly gone by that evening! Taking another tablet the next day I finally got rid of the horrible taste. I hope this works for other suffers if they care to try it. Ask your doctor first before taking any medications....

:-( I have been experiencing an extreme & constant salty taste in my mouth for a month now. I can't hardly eat or drink anything and have already lost 9 lbs. This past week I started feeling just terrible and have a
nauseous feeling and overall feel very sick. I have been to Dr. & at first he thought it was a sinus infection, but had to go back to him yesterday & he thinks that it might be viral. He is having me get some blood work today and will see me again. I don't wish this on anyone and wish there were someone who could tell me what is going on & how long I will have to have this salty taste in my mouth. I am so very tired of this!!

Hi everyone, I have this problem too and have posted before. I urge you all to try what I have been doing. I don't know if what I have is just fading or if what I am using is helping. Go and spend the 7 bucks a piece and get BIOTENE mouthwash and toothpaste. It's not expensive and use it as often as you can. It is sure worth a shot. Let me know if it helps.
Friends: My salty mouth situation started about a month ago. After an internet search as frustrating as everyone else's I consulted an ear, nose, and throat specialist. The doctor had me tested for vitamin deficiencies (normal), and sent me for a cat scan to rule out cerebro-spinal fluid leaking into my sinuses (yipe!, but negative). His conclusion was that I had irritated my tongue, and hence my salt-detecting taste buds, by an overuse of strong breath mints. He said the condition would persist until my body created new taste buds, a matter of three to six months. In the meantime he told me to take care of my tongue by avoiding minty, spicy, hot, or acid food. He also told me to switch to non-minty toothpaste and to gargle and rinse with non-alcohol mouthwash twice a day. Toms of Maine makes non-alcohol mouthwash, as do other companies--check the health food store. I've been following this plan for a week, and while I still have the taste it doesn't spike after meals as it used to, and my mouth is much calmer.
Hope this helps.
Hope this helps.

I posted about two weeks ago now its been about a month but I find that my salty taste seems to be going away or I am getting used to it.
Consulted dentist who wanted to blame it on my old amalgams. It seems that the outgassing of the mercury in those old fillings can cause this problem.(He gave me a website to go to but they could not confirm the salty taste theory and that leave that unsubstantiated.)
Question- how many salt tasters dont have the old mercury amalgams not including the one who had teeth removed since that would take those out.
Aside:
As my salt taste subsided so did a slight stiffness in my right face and jaw. As the stiffness went away the salt taste eased up. I still tend to suspect the nerve blocker used when I had my crown done a month and a half ago. My dentist does not agree. Also it seemed that allergy tablets helped alleviate the saltiness as someone else mentioned.
Ps. if this has gone away for me I am happy I certainly have a lot of sympathy for anyone who has had this for more than three months.

Dear all,
Reading all the posts have been so useful, i thought it was a problem i was imagining. Its my 4th day with the constant salt taste i just woke up one night and was desperate for water but no matter how much i drank it wouldnt go away. Im 21 with no health problems, i take no medication, do not drink coffee and drink quite a bit of water (although could probably do with some more). From all the posts i have read i think the best approach if its just started is to go a few days drinking a lot of water and avoiding salt, tea and alcohol, and take all the above advice such as the BIOTENE mouthwash and toothpaste or toothpaste with zinc and non-alcohol mouthwash. If this does not work in about a week i will go to my doctor (who as many have experienced will probably be clueless) and will suggest some of the causes others have mentioned such as an irritated tongue, yeast infection, nerve damage, Sjogren's syndrome, pancreas problems, blood pressure, heart problems, high calcium levels in the blood. Its a long list but will avoid some of the processes others have been through such as cat scans etc! I hope it all works, good luck!!

could it be a fungas?
I am now into my third month of this horrible salty taste...I have read again the posts and am trying to see what we might all have in common...I think alcohol, tobacco, age, thrush, HIV, and brain tumors can be ruled out. I have been to an ENT, my internist, my dentist, my gastroenterologist and a neurologist and none of them have a clue. A couple have listened with concern, but most seem to think I am making this up as they have never heard of such a thing!
I have noticed that the source of my salt seems to be coming from a tooth that has had a root canal and a crown.
I have also noticed that the saltiness seems to not be a problem when I lay down.
I have also noticed that it seems to get way worse right after I have eaten.
I am thinking it might be related to something in our faces...sinuses or something that relates to them, like the nerve that runs through which controls smell and taste.
Besides the crown on my front tooth, I have an eroded esophagus and am wondering if that might tie in?
I also have allergies this time of year and am wondering if overactive sinuses cause this?
The thing that makes no sense is that I have had the allergies and crown for many years and I have had the erosion of my esophagus for almost two years, and never had the salty taste until late January.
Is there any of this that we all have? Do any of you have a doctor who is actually trying to help you get to the bottom if it?
