Hi guys,
I'm a dentist and have had some experience of this. This phenonemon is more common than people think and a lot of causes have been suggested. Another problem which is similar is 'burning mouth syndrome'.
There are many causative factors, and in most cases a couple are involved.
Poor fitting dentures can contribute, as can any parafunctional habits, i.e grinding, clenching, tongue thrusting.
Vitamin B6 & B12 and zinc supplements can help in some cases.
Another major factor is stress or anxiety. The strange nature of this problem means many people have never heard of another sufferer, and naturally this can cause great anxiety, which is thought to worsen the condition. This can in turn lead people to think that this could be something more sinister, which can worsen things further.
I think a lot of people here were relieved to realise that this affects a great many people. The main thing is to visit a dentist and check that all the affected areas are healthy, which is characteristic of this.
The main thing to remember is that this is not anything to worry about, although i can't start to imagine how hard it is to live with, and many sufferers find symptoms do resolve.
I hope this helps, and i'll drop by once in a while and try and answer any questions as best i can.

Experencing salty taste 4 months now , what exactly is it? Seen primary doctor he had ni explanation, told to seek dentis. N appointment is bscked up.3months currently out of state shall i see medical attention?
That happens to me when I eat too much salt. The solution for myself is drinking back to back 4 bottles of water. and continuing to drink water throughout the next 4 days. til the taste is gone. When I have experienced this and have not watered myself down as to this, I have experienced mini strokes which causes one or both eyes to be blind for a day. I pay attention Now to my salt intake.
i am a diabetic ,and i have started haveing a saltey taste in my mouth i have done about everything i can think of to try to help clear this ,it makes my foods not good no more my water or decafe drinks ,i was sick a couple of weeks ago with a sinus infection ,could this be my problem ???or something else ??
I too have been experiencing this for 16 months. I'm so depressed. When I wake up it's the first thing that hits me. Sleep is the only escape from it. No one can figure it out, or really cares. My HMO docs are not at all interested in my situation. I've tried acupuncture, Chinese herbs, mouthwashes, nutritional analysis with functional medicine doctor .... all with no results except a smaller checking account. :(
As many people in this post, it began for me after tooth filling, as soon as the anestetic ware off. There has been months now. Taste began around the tooth. If you have any more ideas, plese, write. Also, taste somethimes change to sour and back to salty.
Would be very interested to know if you ever resolved this problem.
I removed my wisdom tooth on the right lower jaw 3 months ago and I started having a salty taste after removing my wisdom tooth. I have done an ultrasound on my neck and x-rays on my jaw from the outside, a panorama x-ray and x-rays on my teeth and neither my dentist, the oral surgeon I saw nor my family Dr. know what the problem is. Before removing my wisdom tooth, I was experiencing some pain on my lower right jaw and I was told to remove my wisdom tooth. However, the tooth had a very small cavity and never caused me any pain so since I am still experiencing the same light on and off pain as before, I have deducted that the pain in my lower right jaw might be coming from grinding my teeth at night. Is this deduction correct?
And could you tell me what to do about the salty taste in my mouth as it is a real nuisance.
Thank you

Hello everyone, I have self diagnosed this problem and I hope this will work for you as well. I started having this problem two weeks ago and it turns out it was my finish power ball dishwasher detergent tablets had gone bad. We always left the bag under the sink and never resealed it after every use. Every time I ate something or especially drank coffee from my thermos I would have a reaction. I woke up one morning with no salt taste and for some reason I decided to lick the lid of my thermos, and sure enough I had an instant rush of salt. I then proceeded to drink my coffee out of the thermos and every sip was salty. We bought new soap and store it properly and I have no more salty taste. I hope this helps you!
My husband has had salty taste for six months.... After being told he was crazy and having doctor after doctor treat us the same we had him have a 3D dental x-ray on the tooth that the taste was coming from. He had several regular x-rays and was told everything is fine. The three d x-ray showed a cracked root on the root canal another and an infection that had completely eaten away bone. We removed the root canal completely and also found another root tht had not been filled. It has been a month and the salty taste is pouring out of the hole. He stuff the hole with paper towel to give himself a break. The dentist's are still treating him like he is crazy. The guy can't even enjoy his coffee or food. We are waiting a month to see yet another doctor who is also a dentist. Our concern is tht maybe this is all coming from more infected bone tisue. I would recommend all of you getting 3D dental xrays done so we can see if any of you also have decaying bones inside due to infection that does not show with regular x-rays.
I have had this problem for just over a month. It began with the mucus membrane part of my mouth and tongue swelling and felt very raw and painful. After two weeks on antibiotic and a mouthwash that was like acid the problem got worse. Although the swelling is mostly gone now I have no taste and no smell except that I taste salt in everything I eat or drink and it taste so salty that it makes me nauseated and I cannot eat eat. A large lump appeared on my left side of my face and disappeared after 3 days. My mouth is still raw and I have read Many articles about burned mouth syndrome that describes a lot of my symptoms but not all of them and certainly not the the salty taste. I tried to eat a taco and it tasted like I bit into a block of salt and it made me so nauseated. My Dr did a lot of lab work and I don't know the results yet but reading how so many other people have this condition and have not found an answer makes me feel very unsettled that I'm not going to find an answer myself. If I do get an answer, I will share it with all of you who suffer with this horrible affliction
The root canal filling (crown) is likely to be the cause of the saltiness (imo) after having 7 of them in my mouth at one time. Each time one is extracted I get better. I suffered the saltiness for years, but it disoap eared about a year ago...I didn't know why, but probably after aroot canal tooth extraction.
Good day
