Did you know? On an all-inclusive one week cruise, it is estimated that passengers gain a pretty shocking average of 14 pounds. Arguably the toughest time to maintain your diet and fitness regime is during your vacation. While sticking to your diet plan on vacation may be tough, it is still possible to stay on track even when you're out of your regular routine and away from home. We've compiled the top tips that you can follow to keep your diet and exercise on track during your vacation.

1. Come prepared
Expect not to have access to your usual gym or training equipment. Plan what sorts of activities you can do to replace your usual workouts. If you can bring stretch bands or other compact fitness equipment, then do just that — and actually commit to using it during your vacation, as well. Its also important to bring your workout gear; shoes, clothes and whatever else you may need to work out.
2. Expect to engage in newer activities
A part of planning ahead is to find out what new activities you may be able to try while you are on your vacation. If you don't bike and find out there are bike paths, its a good idea to rent a bicycle and get your exercise for the day in that way. If you're on a beach, try jogging — you'll be amazed at the intensity of running through sand. A beach-side workout can be short and sweet and yet very effective. Other great workouts you may be able to try on vacation include swimming, playing beach volleyball, hiking, snorkeling and more! The point is, don't let your vacation make you do nothing at all. Work out in whatever ways are available to you.
3. Research the local food
Find out what healthy local foods there are at your holiday destination that you can seek out. Find out where the best spots are to eat ahead of time, and even ask the locals when you arrive at your destination. If you're really not sure, you can always ask your server or waiter how the foods are cooked or what ingredients are used. Exploring new culinary delights has got to be one of the highlights of your vacation, but it doesn't have to cause your weight gain to skyrocket to be delicious!
4. Be creative and adaptable with workouts
You probably won't be able to do the same exercises you usually do, but you may be able to perform comparable ones. Using the everyday items around you, you can easily create a workout space which resembles your the usual exercises. Using a bag for weight, stairs for a step, or chairs for a bench, you'll be surprised how simple it is to work the same muscles with a little creativity and imagination. You can do lunges, single-leg squats and deadlifts, step ups, push ups (on bench, as well), tricep dips, and much more!
5. Balance your portions
Eat plenty of fruits and veggies while your away- just because extravagant, rich food is available, it doesn't mean you must eat it for every meal! Be aware of what you're eating in each meal and go for light food items every now and again. Be sure to continue to eat a good balance of grains, meats or meat products, fruits and veggies.
Stay Fit On Vacation
Here are more of the best tips on how to stay fit while on vacation:
6. Eat In
Try eating in as much as possible while you're away. Restaurant food tends to be less healthy and is usually made up of huge portions. Have breakfasts or lunches in (if possible) to help keep a meal or two light. You'll also probably save on money as well!

7. Choose drinks wisely
Choose drinks which are zero calorie to avoid taking on extra, unnecessary calories. Fruity summary vacation drinks can add anywhere from 100 to 500 extra calories per beverage! As often as possible, order water for a cheaper, zero calorie option. If not, go for the zero calorie options for any other drinks.
8. Minimize portion sizes
Portion size is a major factor when it comes to weight gain. North Americans easily eat twice as much as they need in a single meal. As good as the food may look, its just not worth it for your waistline. If you can help it, minimize your portion size and eat slowly so you can keep track of how full you may be feeling. Don't feel as though you must finish everything on your plate.
9. Share – especially with dessert
Sharing is caring! Especially when it comes to irresistible desserts, order one with two or more spoons so you can share with loved ones. You'll cut your usually vacation calorie intake by half or more. Even if you've been walking and getting your fair share of exercise, remember that your eyes are always more hungry than your stomach. Share meal and dessert portions since it is usually enough.
10. Walk, walk, walk.
There are sights to see and things to do! Don't forget that the best way to see it all is to walk as much as possible. It is also cheap and simple, not taking any extra time from your day. Walking the streets in a new town, or new country, you're bound to see and hear things you wouldn't otherwise in a bus or car. Also consider going shopping or for a walk on the beach.
If you're worried about staying in shape while on vacation, the key is to not lose yourself in the vacation. Remember that you worked hard for your body and good health; being away from home shouldn't get in the way and stop your good habits. Staying active and being aware of what you're eating is the best way to stay fit and in shape during your vacation.
