Just be careful with the small spot that bleed when they become scabs, I have these from time to time and when I go for a hair cut the comb tends to catch the scab/ scabs and rips them off and it hurts to high heaven. I had all my hair shaved off for charity last year and my head looked awful, it was a bloody mess with the scabs that had been cut open by the razor.

I wish more physicians would study the root cause behind this. I see only 1 response from a physician here and it is very vague. I would love to participate in a case study.

omg i didnt know dat dis even had a name! I have been doing this for lyk 10 years now! It first started when i was 10 and had got chickenpox.I used to pick those itchy scabs on my head constantly. Now it has become this embarrassing habit that i cant come out of! Although i dont do it in front of others, i feel disgusted as it increases dandruff and makes my hair greasy. I also end up wasting a lot of time as the urge to scratch my hair never ends. I do it subconsciously when im stressed or thinking about something. Due to this i have to wash my hair every alternate day as my hair starts smelling.I generally start scratching the day after i wash my hair.
i think its partly hereditary as i have seen my mom also doing this to her hair. But im way more creative than her when it comes to picking dandruff.

I wonder who does this most, males or females? I love seeing my flakes on different surfaces, I too sometimes scratch too much on my scalp which creates scabs, I might be one of the few members on here that actually like having my hair cut and like it when the hairdresser catches a scab with her comb, I like the idea that I have no control on whether a scab gets removed or not and the action is very quick, I tend to keep changing hairdressers as they get to know my scalp so proceed with caution, I admit I enjoy the pain of a scab being sliced off, my husband and family don't know about this.

I just love dandruff. I love seeing it come off, watching the little flakes catching the sunlight before landing on a dark surface. I like close-up videos on youtube of people removing dandruff flakes from their head. It's awesome. I don't know why anyone would want to get rid of it. I wish we could all have cradle-cap forever. Like a never-emptying box of Tim-Tams.

Same here, have you tried taking photos of falling dandruff in a dark room, the flash creates ghostly orbs!!! Wish we could all get together and have a dandruff orgy!!

There is nothing stopping us, except for the possibility the flakes won't teleport to the orgy location with the rest of our bodies. I would hate to leave them behind to fall into the wrong hands. (Please stop telling people how I create my ghost orb photos. They've been selling like hotcakes. If anyone finds out, I'll have to sell them on the idea my entire scalp is demon-possessed.)

^^^ brilliant response!! Have you seen the Utube video of the guy in the office with his workmates and he shakes his dandruff over a black Jumper? There is a guy who is watching who keeps saying OMG!!

I'm a 25yo male and I've been getting this issue since age 13. I uncontrollably scour around my scalp with my fingernails and peel up whatever flakes I find. It's annoying when I get my haircut because they just fall out the entire time it's being cut.
I've tried Selsun Blue shampoos, other medicated shampoos and olive oil/other scalp moisturizers, including conditioner, but to no avail; they just keep coming. It's a genetic issue of eczema that only affects the scalp. It could be worse, I guess!

My hair is black and gets curly if I let it grow too long, so that makes the flakes visible before even being peeled up. So frustrating.

Nothing better than see dandruff fall, I shed my load over pages in a magazine, its great seeing photos of celebrities with dandruff in their hair, I like to see if my dandruff blends into the colour of their hair and just generally the colours they are wearing. Only problem is if you or anyone in the family go back to read the magazine the pages have ingrained dandruff in them!! I would so love to be a hairdresser, I would play with customers scalps removing the specs.

I started picking my dandruff in 4th grade when I discovered I had it. I even told my best friend my trick because back then it wasn't gross. I eventually stopped doing it for a few years in middle school to high school and started back up in late high school. I have not stopped since but I definitely go through phases where I do it more. I'm 25 now and currently in one of those phases. I also know I have anxiety. I think it's definitely relevant to that but nothing I've ever seeked a Dr for.

I never moved as a teen. My head doesn't even itch I just like searching for the big chunks. Little ones are less satisfying. I've actually even set the bigger chunks in a place where I can find them again but I'm so enthralled. It's very strange. My sister also has the problem where she is constantly scratching her head. I do feel a little bummed when I can't find anymore large patches but it's usually a sign that I need to stop.

I love it when my hairdresser catches a nearly healed scab on my scalp, it hurts at the time but the pain is short lived, is this related to self harm????

Cut out animal based products like meats, milk, eggs, etc! It helps your body all over! Check out the documentary Cowspiracy where they explain more about this. I still have junk food, flour and some oily food and I am fine. The main problem is the animal products of a western diet c:

To the above, I like having dandruff flakes, I would hate to cut out animal based products and find a dramatic reduction in my dandruff flakes.

wonder what the biggest dandruff flake ever recorded is, mine is really fine ( like sugar) at the moment, it is always like this the first few days after washing my hair.
