I got my Gallbladder out in march and since then i've been living a nightmare. I got fired from my job because of the constant diahrea, depression, and nausea. I went into my doctors office and they gave me an anti nausea med but it didn't even touch it. I can't eat meat, fatty foods, or anything high in nutrients because I puke them all back up or It comes out the other end almost instantly. It's a race to see how fast I can get to a bathroom. I can't drink anything when I eat because it starts up the nausea. My right side by my ribs constantly hurts after I eat or drink. The doctors say that it'll go away with time. I don't think I can keep up with this c**p. I want answers or a way to fix this.
I had my gall bladder out a week ago tomorrow. I have not had a single bad symptom since it's been out. I heard from friends who had theirs out that I'd have diarrhea for life every time I'd eat fat. I started out on clear liquids the day before surgery and fasting and then I had veggie soup and half a ham sandwich the afternoon after surgery. So far I've had almost everything that gave me trouble before and no diarrhea or cramping or anything. I've even had to take a laxative earlier this week! I'm still taking my pain meds for tenderness from the surgery but I've evn begun cutting back on that as well. I am overweight (5'1", size 16) but I have no other health conditions. No diabetes or elevated cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. I had no other health conditions or problems before surgery. I am still sore and having trouble lifting anything and bending all the way over but otherwise I'm doing better than before surgery. I didn't know how bad off I was until I had it out. I haven't been able to sleep on my back for decades because of acid reflux, now I can with no problem. I didn't realize until they told me post op to take a deep breath that I hadn't been able to draw in a deep breath like that for as long as I can remember. I also noticed that when I urinate it's like I have an extra tank! I have never eliminated so much in a bathroom visit before and I go a few more times each day than I did before. I think that may be due to all the fluids I had pumped into me in the hospital. I saw someone in internal medicine 2 weeks ago because I had a daily stomachache that wouldn't go away. When I ate anything fatty (fried fish especially!) I'd get an incredible pressure/pain in my chest and abdomen that'd last from 15 minutes to several hours. It got to the point where I couldn't eat anything without fear of an "attack". The doctor thought I had a peptic ulcer even though I told him everyone I knew who'd had their gall bladder out said I had the same symptoms. He sent me home with a script for Prilosec and an apointment for an ultrasound in 10 days. Five days later I was in the ER in excrutiating pain and I was admitted and scheduled for surgery first thing Monday morning. My GB was almost half full of pea sized stones. I'd heard a lot of people went home the day of surgery but even though mine went perfectly (doc said it was one of the easiest ones he'd ever done in 22 years) I didn't go home until the next afternoon. I won't sugarcoat it. It was hard the first couple days and spacing out the pain meds has been tough at times but I am thrilled with the results so far. I think all the people with issues about weight gain and pain, etc, may have other issues going on beyond their gall bladder.
Hope this helps!!!
I had my 'GB' removed 4-weeks-ago in Varna, Bulgaria. The surgeons, doctors and nurses were all highly-professional, and did a great job. With the help-of my Bulgarian translator, I was given strict after-care instructions, which I 'must' follow for the next 3-MONTHS. I also have to report-back to my surgeon next Monday for a follow-up-check-up! ... My instructions include the following. In any 24 hours I must limit time-on-my-feet to 2-hours. When 'active/up' I must wear tight-fitting underpants. (for 'support'). I cannot 'lift' any weight 'over' 5 kilos (think about 'that' IF you INTEND-TO-FLY) ... ... DIET; FIRST, for the following 10-days after surgery I had a simple regime of tablets to take when 'eating' ... Simultaneously I was instructed as-follows; No fatty-foods, No YOLK-of-egg, NO coffee, No 'fried-foods', No sweets, No cakes, No 'cold'-drinks, No chocolate, No BIG-meals ... ... I'm 'advised-to', eat a-'little'-often, I can drink, 'weak'-tea, and fruit-juices, plus lots-of fruit and vegetables ... 'AFTER-EFFECTS' I have 'some' GAS, but not enough to distress-me, and I 'have' a small (expected) diminishing 'pain', NOTHING-ELSE ... ... IF you have been on a waiting-list for 'months' or, are not-satisfied with a truculent/unhelpful GP, hospital or specialist, and want your problem solved pretty damn quick !!! come to Varna, and get it sorted 'here' - I hugely recommend it. -BUT 'if' you have your EU health cert'docs (!) You 'will' have to 'pay-something', but relative to costs 'in' the UK, it's very-little, so over-to-you ... ... ... Hope this might have helped!!!
Don't think that you can't get Cancer from the Gallbladder, because I did. I'm in remision now. I have the opposite affect. I'm always constipated and gassy. So thank your lucky stars that you are okay.
I HAD MY GALLBLADDER REMOVED TWO MONTHS AGO. I DO NOT HAVE THE DIAHRREA. MY ISSUE IS THE OPPOSITE. I AM UNABLE TO GO TO THE BATHROOM ON THE NORMAL BASIC WITHOUT TAKE SOMETHING. I FEEL BLOATED ALL THE TIME. I KEEP A HEAVY FEEL ALL THE TIME. I JUST WONDER WHY MY DIGESTION SYSTEM IS NOT WORKING AS WELL AS EVERYONE ELSE AFTER THE SURGERY. I SPOKE WITH SOMEONE ELSE WHO HAD THEIR TAKEN OUT THREE MONTHS AGO AND HE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. HE SAID HE HAS GAIN ALOT OF WEIGH IN HIS STOMACH AFTER HAVING THE SURGERY. I HAVE CHANGE MY HOLD WAY OF EATING. I HAVE TAKEN MEAT OUT ALL TOGETHER. I DO MORE VEGETABLES AND FIBER. I JUST WONDERED IF MANY ONE HAVE THIS PROBLEM AND DID YOU FIND A SOLUTION TO IT.
Hi all,
I have found since my gallbladder was removed(2010), that I can't tolerate high fat consumption, else I get what I affectionately call the 'Xenical effect'. I put this down to not having that little reservoir of extra bile, normally stored in your gallbladder, ready to help digest any fatty meals, so unable to digest the high fat content, my body just rejects it - the very next day in a rapid way :). I just have to watch the fat content of food and not over indulge in cake and cream(worst offenders). Not all bad I suppose as I won't gain any extra weight, but it does mean I have to have half portions of cake and go easy on the cream and chocolate. At least I can eat, albeit smaller portions, of those foods I couldn't when I had gallstones.
I have a more of a tummy now but I think this is more age(perimenopausal) and after two kids, plus surgery, rather than just surgery alone - my tummy muscles had disappeared after the second child :(
Maybe try cutting down the high fat content foods may help with the diarrhea, certainly helps with me. You don't have to stop them altogether, I find just maybe having half the portion of something fatty helps, though try to stick to less than 5% fat is best of all.
Hope that helps x
I had mine removed about 2 years ago... I also had a false negative pregnancy test before hand, & after i had the surgery, I experienced pain - to find out i was 9 weeks pregnant & now my daughter's hair & teeth growth is stunted... on top of all these things, i cant eat half the things i like without running to a bathroom within the first few bites. im only 19, had my surgery at 17 (had over 100 gallstones). before my surgery i was 125 lbs. after my pregnancy and i had lost the initial weight, i weighed in at 130 lbs. (i had little to no appetite while pregnant) & ever since i got my appetite back, ive been 150-160 lbs... i dont eat junk food, & i have no idea what to do.

I had my gb remove in july of 2012, and I am problems with diahrrea also. I also had it after a surgery I had in 2008 but that went away pretty much. But this time it is constant. I have to wear Depends because of over active bladder that I plan on have surgery for, but if this keeps up I guess that I will not be able to stop wearing them. It really gets expensive. I take immodiuam before I go out just incase. I never know when it will happen. I have to make a wild dash for the bathroom and sometimes can't make it. thank God for depends.
I had my GB removed 2 years ago. Sergery went wonderful 3 little sars you cannot even see. But yellow stool and running to the bathroom is the problem from time to time. Cholestromine works but I devide one scoop in four and take with meals. Also I add Cholacol bile salts (yes more bile but we are suffering from bile acid not salts because our fat is not absorbed) And yellow stool diahreha and cramping often caused by nonabsorbtion. So I am taking Cholestromine, Cholachol, Digest Basic by Enzimedica and Aline Probiotics. But take your meds away from Cholestromine: it binds your pills and take them on a way out. I take cholestromine in apple sauce followed 1 cup of water and then I eat my meal. It helps. When I am good: i have good days Beeng good means No more fat then 4 g per one meal No fried No marbled meat lots of (cooked for me cannot have raw) non starchy vegies(potatoes Yams feed bad bacteria and hurts our gut) no sweets except fresh fruits (limit) So vegies, cold water fish, organic chicken, meat No dali meats or cheeses. Aged Asiago cheese is ok with me a little. I hope it will help
Both I and a friend found relief from the diarrhea and post-hepatic dumping syndrome or whatever you want to call it by doing the Atkins Diet (with some modifications with trial and error). Also, a product called Mediclear seems to help. I'm experimenting with that right now. I did the cleansing diet with it as per instructions (kind of hard but possible) and it really knocked the problem back significantly. Now I'm trying to see if I can get on a maintenance schedule without using as much and not so many dietary restrictions. A fair number of people that have GB's out develop gluten intolerance as well.
I'm really ticked that allopathic medicine has not figured this out better. I get a lot of "deer in the headlights" looks when I talk about this or seek answers/help from regular physicians.
