allergic to most antibiotics

Hi, I am allergic to most antibiotics, so when I get an infection it’s almost impossible to get a medicine for me. Even when I get a safe antibiotic, I always take it with fear of having allergy or side effects. Is there any other option for me, except antibiotics?

Hi, you have my sympathy. I had both my ovaries removed 8 weeks ago and now appear to be having allergic reaction

Hi to all of you
I was thinking I was probably one of just a few that was allergic to all antibiotics. I too can only take a z-pack and that is only for extreme emergency's. I am having a bout with diverticulitis and the traditional antibiotic given for this disease are making me want to remove my skin. NO one knows what do to??? I have been to many doctors and specialists and they just don't know what to tell me?? These are not psychosomatic symptoms, they are visible rashes and blotches coupled with itching, and Benadril is not doing much???
Very frustrating to say the least!!! I am glad to know that I am not the only one out there with this dilemma.

I too am Allergic to many Antibiotic families. Cillins,Sulfurs,Cefzil,Bactrum,Cipro and a non-antibiotic Brethene used to stop labor contractions. It sucks. Its stamped on my license. Have to wear that Big Red Allergy band at the Hospital. The only thing I can take is a Z-pack and Macrobid. I stick with herbs and stay away from people in fear of germs. Kinda sad. My greatest fear is getting sick.
One important aspect of adverse reactions to antibiotics that I have NOT seen discussed in this thread is the distinction between anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions. These two types of reactions can have the same signs and symptoms, but anaphylactic reactions are IgE-mediated and anaphylactoid reactions are not. Most allergists and immunologists only call an adverse reaction to a medication an "allergy" if it is an IgE-mediated reaction.
People who have anaphylactoid and other non-allergic reactions to medications may have a mast cell disorder or some other condition. Some mast cell disorders are mastocytosis and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) / mast cell activation disorder (MCAD).
Western herbs and Chinese herbs can be used in stead of antibiotics in many situations. Of course the results may not be as fast but it may be a lot safer. I go to reputable Chinese herbalists, I go to the best I can find. There are books on this subject and I have three, they all have titles like "herbal antibiotics" or natural antibiotics. Don't give up. There's also something called colloidal silver which used to be used more often before antibiotics were invented. There are probably other things to, don't forget, antibiotics weren't invented until around the 30s or 40s. The people found ways to survive in many cases!
the books I have with her about Western herbs which I am less likely to use but can be used are called "natural alternatives to antibiotics" by Dr. John McKenna, "herbal antibiotics" by Stephen Harrod Buhner and Natural Alternatives to Antibiotics" by Leon Chaitow.
Again I have to say that I have found Chinese medicine to be somewhat more effective for me.
Naturapaths sometimes have solutions to this. For example one suggested to me to have one drop, and I'm not recommending you do this, of food grade hydrogen peroxide. It causes very severe G.I. problems but apparently it has antibiotics effects. Don't do it without supervision!
I know Chinese herbalists in the New York City urban area if you are interested.
I have the opposite problem! My doctor claims I have a UTI- but I have NO SYMPTOMS! I've called the office repeatedly because all antibiotics make me violently ill- except straight, old-fashioned penicillin. What's the one thing my doctor is absolutely REFUSING to give me? Penicillin. The basis is "people have been using it for too many years." Guess I'll be flushing some pills.....
Hey, I wanted to reply to your post because I also have ehlers danlos and am allergic to every medicine that I take ~ antibiotics and otherwise. I was just wondering what happened since you posted this a yr. ago. I would be ok if you wanted to email back & forth about this! Thanks!
I have the same problem. Right now there is not one antibiotic I can take without major side effects. As I type this I am fighting an infection and taking Allegra to combat the side effects. I fear that I may go into anaphylactic shock which can kill a person very quickly. I live alone so there is a real danger for me. I wish I could find a doctor that specialized and worked with people that go thought this. There is no plan of action for me should I need an antibiotic. I need surgery but with 50% of all hospital patience getting mercer and staph, surgery isn't much of an option for me. I believe that Mercer and Staph would be life threatening for me. I would like it if we could compare notes.

I can so identify with what you said about the way the doctors treat you...they treat me the same way and even act as if I am lying about my being allergic. What is even worse is people come up with these hair brained home remedies and I get so desperate I have tried them. This week I drank a cup of apple cider vinegar. It tore my stomach in half! I was so sick. The jack ass that told me to use it didn't even call me later to ask me how it worked. I live in fear, wondering if I will survive the next infection. I am at the age where I get bladder infections very often.
I wish I could hug you. I know exactly what you are going though. I have prayed for death I have been so sick. Not to get on a preaching kick but if I didn't have Jesus Christ and God in my life I'd be so scared of death. I don't fear death but the pain and suffering. I have done plenty of the pain and suffering. It looks like a consult with the Mayo Clinic might be the way to go too. It is horrible to hurt so badly. I am willing to bet that many of us that are allergic to antibiotics were given them frequently as a kid. My mother smoked very heavy and often I got ear and throat infections. I was on an antibiotic most of my child hood. Now I am allergic to everything I have used. I pray God will help me. Like you I need surgery and with Mercer and Staph infecting 50% every patience in the hospital, I believe that would be a death sentence for me. I am not sure if it is both of them but I know that one of them comes back frequently. There is no way I could survive frequent bouts of Mercer or Staph. I hope you and I can talk. Hang in there, you aren't alone. I know what you are suffering and it is tough.
You said oil or oregano for a bladder infection. What kind of oil? Oregano...what do you do with it? Eat it, add it too the lemon grass tea? What do you do with the oil? Please reply back. I am suffering though a really bad bladder infection and the antibiotics are giving me allergic reactions.

I can't find the "lemon grass tea" only "lemon zinger herbal tea" Is this what you mean? It is put out by Celestial.
We are having the same issue with our 2 year old. She's allergic to penicillin, amoxicillin, omnicef, clindamycin and now Bactrim. Hives and anaphylaxis to all. She also has GERD, asthma and what appears to be chronic pneumonia. We have done a bronchoscopy (found strep pneumo there), upper and lower GI studies. She's a patient through Aerodigestive at children's but even they can't figure it out. Right now we are facing a possible removal of a piece of her left lung and a g-tube (she barely eats). They are also contacting National Jewish. Looking for any suggestions. She's also severely allergic to eggs.
I have been taking Allegra to counter act my allergic reaction to the antibiotics. I don't know if your baby can take this but I thought I'd let you know what I have been doing. It has kept me from getting the rash and from my palms of hands from becoming swollen and inflamed.
