I agree. Too much vitamin C can cause a skin rash, also burning or itching when urinating.

ive'd experienced rashes due to high intake of vitamin c.

Just over the last couple of months, I have been experiencing dizziness and shortness of breath periodically. I have been trying to narrow down the list of culprits and I am starting to think it may be citric acid, ascorbic acid, or maybe even vitamin C in general. Have any of the rest of you had either of these symptoms? I have also had slight nausea and a bit of itchiness, but no visible rash that I've noticed.

Hi there, does anyone know a diet plan that contains no vitamin c, as my wife seems to think that our son might be allergic to c ?

This is a bit long but I am working through my problem but am getting closer. I have a goitre (about 10 years) Raynauds (about 8 years) and scleroderma diagnosed in early 2010 (blood test in 2011 showed deficiency in vitamin D). The left side of my neck and up the back of my head have been going stiff or in a spasm (could be migraine but does not throb but I think vasoconstriction) and I was sure certain food was triggering it. Could never zoom in on the culprit but I thought margarine was one (contained beta carotene). Late 2011 suspected vitamin C. My GP was away and saw another doctor and told him and he ridiculed me. Seems to be getting worse and is happening after eating orange coloured foods with more than or a high amount of daily average of vitamin A or Vitamin C or both (apricots, pumpkin) ref. Nutrition Data Facts site. Found the site Acu-cell.com and have been piecing things together. Just read today that vitamin c helps iron absorption and am now wondering if too much iron is the real culprit. For about 8 days now I have been taking 1 MSM tablet, 1 vitamin E 1000 IU, 1 vitamin D 1000 mg, 1 fish oil capsule from WILD fish 1500 mg., 1 amino acid chelated magnesium 500 mg. Have gone pain free for hours each day until I have gone and eaten something without checking A and C content first. I read that C and E need to be balanced so I took another E 1000 IU and it rectifed the problem.

I have ulcerated finger tips from Raynauds but have experienced itching or stinging while having the neck stiffness. I bought a papaya 2 days ago as apparently the papain enzyme helps break up fibrin (I also have a Dupytrens contracture nodule on my right palm caused by excess fibrin) not thinking of the vitamin c. I had no problem. But today I did not take the above fish oil, E, D, magnesium or MSM and ate more papaya and straight away my neck went stiff. I took an E cap. with no immediate improvement and then thinking of the possible iron problem I luckily had some magnesium complete caps. with calcium, B6, zinc and vit. k. The stiffness has just about gone now.

1 to 2 cups of coffee in a day usually helps but more than that seems to worsen. Now for the riddle I have not yet solved. 4 or more pieces of chocolate also takes away the stiffness. I am thinking it could be the lecithin in it but not sure yet. Also 4 to 6 pieces of crystallized ginger helps a little and a lot depending on the day. Ginger inhibits Thromboxane A2 which is a vasoconstrictor and plays a role in inflammation.

It is quite a jigsaw to work through. I hope this info will help you all. I plan to see my GP and get my blood tested again for at least iron.

I have been allergic to vitamin C my whole life. Doctors are hesitant to believe it but after seeing it, they have researched it to little effect. Only 3 percent of the worlds population has been found to have it. I get itchy, then swelling, hives, respiratory distress as well and I have been intubated twice. I have found I can drink Simply Apple Cranberry and Apple Juices with no reaction. You are not crazy, just Special!

I have been living with this my whole life. It sucks. There is really no way around it. I take a lot of benedryl when I eat things with Ascorbic Acid. It stops the hives and the breathing issues but the itchiness is still there. Simply Apple juice and their Cranberry Cocktail is really the only juices I can drink. Try to find things that don't add vitamin C. People fortify just about everything these days with C. I eat as many vegetables and fruits that I can, but literally all of them have different levels of vitamin C. I haven't found a cure for it yet. It is really a matter of you being able to find what combination works for you. Drink a lot of water, sometimes that helps a little. THis problem baffles doctors because C is a water soluable vitamin, but I have had this problem forever. Good Luck!

I am sorry I have not responded regarding my previous post, but as you can see I have been having some other health problems.  This is a copy of an email I just sent my doctor which is self explanatory.  Unfortunately my son has been overseas for three weeks and I have muddled through and got through it.

"Dear Dr Tameena,

I am sorry this is so long and involved but as my blood test results will be coming through and so you can digest it all, I thought it best to give you an overview of the last couple of weeks and also relay what I have learned in that time regarding clues as to what is going on with me health wise.

I had blood tests this morning and have an appointment to see you this coming Friday.  Don't be surprised if my magnesium levels and/or zinc levels are high.

For about last six months on and off I have been taking Nutrivital Magnesium Complete (100mg total elemental magnesium; 100 mg calcium citrate; 21 mg pyridoxine hydrochloride; 15 mg zinc gluconate equivalent to 3.9 mg zinc; 50 mcg phytomenadone vitamin K. Contains soy polysaccharides as an excipient.) as I was waking up some nights with a bad cramp/muscle spasm in foot and up leg and Mag. Phos biochemical tissue salt relieved cramp immediately.

About a week before I saw you three weeks ago I remember thinking maybe I don't need the other components.

I bought Natures Own "plain" magnesium capsules from Coles and had 1 a day for about a week and then realised they were Amino Acid Chelated and remembered the naturapath saying something about them so stopped taking them. I read they go straight into the amino acid pathway and are absorbed very quickly and can cause low blood pressure and even coma.

Around this time I also ate ONE serving of several foods I had not eaten for a couple of years.

Spinach, mushroom, brazil nuts, thousand island dressing, fresh pineapple.

Woke up two days later with gout in my big toe. I do not drink alcohol. I ate quite a few canned black cherries which I believed were good for gout and also tofu (with magnesium chloride - nigari) which I had never eaten before. Gout subsided after 2 days.

I then started going very faint on and off after meals. I looked on internet and realised my symptoms were LOW blood pressure and had salt. Was also eating pistachios which have a high level of potassium and B6.

Got back to normal I thought and ate a banana toasted sandwich which I have all the time, and straight away felt faint. Bananas high potassium and B6

A few days later I ate 10 chicken chilli chips and neck went very stiff as soon as I ate the last one. On researching, chilli has very high Vitamin A and C and B6. Pumpkin, mango, pawpaw and apricots all make my neck go stiff (high Vitamin A - Beta Carotene and high Vitamin C). One time a can of sardines (high B12) caused the stiff neck as well.

I have traced my stiff neck to maybe NEEDING more Histidine or Histamine (or a problem with Histidine conversion to Histamine) as once I eat chocolate (has a good amount of Histidine and I also read chocolate makes magnesium insoluble and it cannot be absorbed) and 1 CUP of coffee my stiff neck subsides. I usually sneeze a few times and I feel really good and then my nose goes stuffy. So it seems I need the opposite to anti histimine.

On Saturday I ate ham and tomato toasted sandwich with no problem. That evening was not very hungry and had ham, tomato and tofu (because it has good levels of Histidine but then found soy products are very high in Phenylalanine) and felt a little tight in the head. Ate about 10 cashew nuts and felt faint straight away. Then realised cashew nuts are very high specifically in magnesium and copper.

I suspect a possible problem with amino acids Tryptophan, Phenylalanine and Tyrosine and or the Serotonin, Dopamine, Norepinephrine, Melatonin side of things.

Phenylalanine converts to - Tyrosine - Epinephrine - Norepinephrine.

Regarding Serotonin (involved in vasoconstriction) I read that Tryptophan and B6 make Serotonin. There is also a B12 connection wich a specific group of cobalt-containing corrimoids. Magnesium, calcium, B6 and zinc seem to come into play in connection with Serotonin.

Regarding Dopamine it seems that Dopamine Beta Hydroxylase (is this connected to Beta Carotene) is an enzyme that converts Dopamine to Norepinephrine (released by stress - fear and flight response). DBH is a copper containing oxygenase requiring ASCORBATE as a co-factor.

This morning I was having the fasting blood test so could not eat. I woke up with a very stiff neck (I had 2 slices of toast with orange marmalade just before midnight) and could not have coffee or chocolate so massaged my neck and head and it eventually subsided. I needed to eat but wanted to get the blood test done so I could get back to see you. Todd just got back home on Saturday and my sister was in Melbourne and I had no one to mind my dog which is paralysed in his back legs and needs someone close by.

This morning while trying to get my dogs organized and get out the door so I could get home and eat I got very agitated and stressed (seems like the fright flight response).

I had my blood pressure checked at Wyee Chemist on the way home and it was 144/83."

I don't know if the ascorbate connection regarding Dopamine is connected with Vitamin C in food or not.  I will post more information as I have it.

Well my doctor supposedly did not read my email but told me very emphatically she could not comment at all on my research but whatever I do, do it in moderation.

My blood test showed normal potassium, sodium, magnesium, zinc and iron and everything else was also in normal range.

I have added more salt to my diet and cut down on foods high in potassium am not having the dizziness/fainting attacks.

I read that the body produces more histamine to warn of problems and it does so if sodium, potassium and water are out of balance.

My stiff neck problem has been really bad for a couple of days.  Today was unbearable after drinking about a quarter of a cup of Gatorade (Sodium Chloride and Monopotassium phosphate) just in case my potassium had gone to low (just as much phosphorus as potassium).    I then realised my phosphorus levels were probably too high (from eating too many sodium containing foods such as bacon).   Had a glass of warm lemon juice with water and stiffness went within half an hour.

Chocolate usually relieves my stiff neck but did not today as I also had cheese, about 10 cashew nuts and warm milk with cocoa.  All high in phosphorus.  (Chocolate and cocoa have catechins which block the enzyme that acts as a catalyst in Histadine amino acid conversion to Histamine).  See previous post.

WHAT HAS THIS TO GOT TO DO WITH VITAMIN C?

Potassium and phosphorus are both synergstic with vitamin C.

Phosphorus needs to be in the right balance with sodium.  High phosphorus levels therefore affect sodium levels.  I read that high phosphorus levels cause ITCHING.

I have sent a hair sample away for mineral analysis but the particular lab does not apear to test phosphorus levels.  My doctor did not want to know about the hair mineral analysis but I hope she will look at the results.

I would suggest that all of you who seem to have a vitamin C allergy check out the phosphorus levels in the food they are eating.   Just remember it is the combined amount of phosphorus and vitamin C in the food you have to look at.  Just eat a smaller portion of those foods each day and balance with sodium intake.

If feeling faint or dizzy check out the potassium and vitamin C combined amount and balance with sodium intake.

I hope this will help everyone.  I have forgotten my password.

My doc, Dr. Nelson, at The Center for Advanced Medicine in Encinitas, California just "cleared" me yesterday for Vit C. I'm not to touch or take anything with Vit C for 25 hours then should be fine with it. I received a small list of safe things I could eat until then. There is hope.

You are not alone, I have suffered from this same allergy since I was 4 years old...have never gotten scurvy, but when I eat fruit or vegetables I first develop respiratory problems, and can also get hives, itchiness, sores in my mouth, diaareha (sp?), blocked sinuses, etc. I am now 57 yrs old and have seen doctor's, naturopaths, nutritionists, allergists with no solution.
