Thank you all for these informative posts; not many people know of this problem. I have been aware that when I take Vitamin C I get dry lungs, making it very difficult to breath and my lungs fill with sticky mucous which is almost impossible to remove until I exclude C . I thought it was due to Vitamins C's ability to 'dry' [dehydrate] but since your information suggests that citric acid is made using a fungal process [!] I can see the logic. It seems I am intolerant of Vitamin C.
I have found Quercetin is helpful but it is now frequently accompanied by Vitamin C, so be wary.
I am OK with citric fruit in small helpings occasionally. I love clementines but if I eat them regularly my joints become excruciatingly painful.
I am already intolerant of wheat and dairy – [darned nuisance!] – so there is a pattern here.
I'm 64 and am allergic to vitamin C. The reason is because my mother gave me orange juice too early in life. In those days they did not know or in rural areas the information was not available. I have not found a rememdy yet but I am going to try homopathic. carolyn
You might find its the Kiwi's causing allergy...
I discovered I had an allergy to citrus fruits. It started out with itching all over, a couple of sneezes and then hives, and if I kept eating the offending fruit (tangerines), I would be toxic by the end of the week. Vitamin "C" is in everything, but in the form of Ascorbic Acid. The allergy keeps getting worse. If I squeeze a wedge of lemon into my water, after my first sip, I start coughing. I finally tried a vitamin that is called "Allergy C". It is made from Palm. That works well. I can now take the dosage I need when I start to get a cold, or have one already. The Allergy C works the same or better than the Citrus Acid one.
I never ate too much fruit or too early.

There is nothing to be done except stop all forms of citric acid and Vitamin C. I have been dealing with this since birth and it runs in my family as well. My daughter's pediatrician termed it Aytopic or extreme sensitivity instead of an allergy. Cold showers for the skin irritation, no soap and lots of Eucerin or shea butter. You can try an antihistamine, but they have never worked for me. In the mean time, no juice, no viatmins and no fruit.
Hi, My name is Aimee. I don't know if anyone is still looking into this topic or not. I have been allergic to Vitamin C since I was born, and it has steadily gotten worse the older I get. I'm 41. I was diagnosed when I was 5 after many attempts at trying to figure out what was wrong with me. Certain fruits do different things, Citric fruits of all kinds burn my skin, I get acid burns just from touching them. I cannot be in the same room when someone is peeling any fruits with a rind, I will go into anaphylactic shock, The less harmful ones like apples, pears, bell peppers, cause my stomach to bleed. I have to read every label, before I eat or use products. And the minor tolerable reactions are blisters on my mouth, in my nose, around my eyes.. if I am sick at all and have a runny nose, blisters in and around it, mouth is the same, and god love me if should happen to cry. The way the Dr. explained it to me was like this : "Imagine your body is a pitcher full of water, and you've already enough Vit. C in there, now take another pitcher of water and pour it in.. it overflows, that is the allergic reaction." Though it isn't fun, and makes going out to dinner anywhere a nightmare, you will be alright. If you are worried about your immune system, take Vit. E 400mg once a day. It does the same thing as Vit. C and is nicer to your teeth than eating all those acidic foods. Trust me, though annoying, and crappy at times, everything will be alright. I'm not a Dr., I've just been living with this since birth, been through a lot of trial and error. If you want to discuss it further, or have any questions you can email me..
As an above post states, there is an actual cure for allergies... as crazy as that sounds. First of all, allergies run in my family. My mom and brother both had Nimbudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique performed on them (they both were allergic to vitamin C, as well as other vitamins). Low and behold, they no longer have allergies. In addition, it eliminated many other things that doctors don't normally associate with allergies (narcolepsy, acid reflux, IBS, depression, excema). I have actually just started the NAET treatment as well. I am looking forward to be able to be healthy again and not have such a limiting diet (I am also gluten and dairy intolerant). I really suggest looking into the NAET treatment. Its acupressure - so it doesn't involve any medications, needles, etc.
Google latex fruit syndrome, currentl;y called oral allergy syndrome. People with fruit allergies usuaslly have a latex allergy. There are many many vegetables that cross react with latex as well. Proteins in latex are similar to those in fruits and vegetable, so the imune system can not tell the difference. It took 50 yrs. for me to get a diagnosis and it was from my sister, a nurse of 35 yrs. The worst part is, I have spina bifida, so I am the poster child for latex allergies. Most health care profesdsionals do not know the real dangers of latex and will not believe you, so, BE YOUR OWN HEALTH CARE ADVOCATE. Blind faith, will get you killed. Not one of the many doctors or specialists , could diagnosis me and I had to file bankruptsy due top all the medical bills, as well. It is hard to find food without latex. Even beef has milk and milk has latex. Syringes have raw latex. Autism has risen 78% in the last decade as well as all auto imune diseases on the rise. Stem rust has contaminated our food sources, so boil everything, before you eat and say a prayer. jmt
It is impossible to be allergic to vitamin C. You can be allergic to the source - rose hips, for example. Vitamin C was named for Collagen which is the connective tissue holding all our tissue together.
What is the remedy to avoid from the effect of vitamin-C allergy? My wife can't eat any fruit that contains vitamin C.
Vit C tabs are usually ascorbic acid. Try Vit tabs if you need them that are not made from this
