Hey everyone. Just thought to let you know that absorbic acid is made from corn - cornstarch. So for all those who are allergic to corn, this might be the reason for your reaction. I'm allergic to corn, so that is why my thoroat would close when taking ester-c.

I suggest you all look at the fed up website by Sue Dengate. It sounds like you are experiencing sensitivites to Salicylolates
Sorry, that was meant to be salicylates
I too have Vitamin C allergy. My clinical manifestations are little different. If I take minute amount of Ascorbic acid in any form over a period of time (2-3 weeks) it doesn't react much. I feel it may be due to the fact that Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin. So it gets washed of the body. But if I increase the ascorbic intake in one go then I am doomed big time. If I consume citric acid food and ascorbic acid then also result is same. I just love citrus food (unfortunately)
Reaction - I get a little throat irritation and little fever to begin with then it comes to a stage where it appears like Pharengitis or some form of throat infection. My nose may or may not flow. If nose flows then it's almost a week before it stop irrespective of what I do to treat it. Lastly I start coughing. It's just dry recurrent cough, which goes on for 2-6 weeks; that too if i don't take anything citrus again.
I did blood culture, throat swab culture, it wasn't conclusive. Only my ESR goes high apart from little high WBC. Then add to this if i start some antibiotics am doomed even worse. Cough goes even bad.
Nothing works, no antiallergic nothing. Somebody suggested it be asthama. Then after series of tests he said it aint asthama by miles, my lung capacity is that of a athlete. I then disclosed I swim and play badminton / tennis ( since i was in school ) regularly as time permits.
My treatment - I just drink oral rehydration as much as i can. Gargle with salt water or Hexidine. I just wait for the this phase to get over. Do I have any other choice.
NOW THE WORST PART, am a SURGEON myself and imagine seeing my patients in hospital and coughing with them together at times. It sometimes affect my.
I know allergy is a part of life now. But am desperately searching for quick symtomatic treatment at the least. My allergic cough irritates me and my normal daily life.
My baby girl has this problem too! been searching for someone else to know what i'm talking about!!
Anything with added vit c makes her have horrible diaper rash!!
thanks for mentioning the facebook page Im going to like it asap!
Hello. I'm curious if anyone researching their sesetivity to vitamin C in general or ascorbic acid in particular has made any correlation to MTHFR? There seems to be a lot of health facotr correlations.
I'm pretty sure that I'm allergic to Vitamin C. I started taking it a few days ago because my husband has a cold and I didn't want to catch it. I figured that since I'm not big on eating fruit, I'd take large doses of Vitamin C. Well last night after dinner I took a vitamin C liquid capsule, along with my one other medication.....Lipitor, which I've been taking for many years. A short time later my body started breaking out in hives. These large red itchy welts were appearing all over my body. I haven't eaten anything different lately, in fact my husband and I being seniors, eat very health food, so the only thing different I'd done was take this large Vitamin C capsule. I then took two Benadryl tablets to fight the allergic reactions I was having. I took 2 more Benadryls ever 3 hours for the rest of the night before the hives started to shrink. So I went online this morning to ask if anyone else had allergic reactions when taking Viutamin C and I was surprised on how many articles I found. As for taking the Benedryl to combat the Vitamin C, it took at least six hours before the insane itching stopped. I had one of the worst nights of my life.
JRT I am soo happy to find someone exactly like me except I am allergic to Vitamin C, Malic acid(found in cranberries) and citric acid. I cannot eat anything. This causes me horrid problems, blisters in the mouth, anal itching and my taste buds go numb and sting. I thought I was crazy! The doctor says I have an acid allergy and no more coffee, soda, tomatoes, chocolate, pineapple beer and citrus the normal acid stuff people normally have when allergy erupts. But it has been so bad I told the doctor that something is wrong everything is effecting me! I have thrombocytopenia which is low blood platelets but this is crazy. It has only been going on for the last three years so I am pretty new to this. I thought I was the only person in the world allergic to acids. Doctor said probably 1 of 500 have this problem and glad to find one. I feel horrid I cannot eat out comfortably at friends homes or restaurants. this has become a nightmare! finding food to eat then having such a small menu and only being able to drink strange juices and water is really hard. And yes giving up Italian food , chocolate, hot tea ,coffee and stuff you love is harder than I could have ever imagined!!!
That is what happens to me. I will pass blood through both my kidneys and my bowels
I also have issues eating anything using preservative E300, E330 etc. i.e. Vitamin C, Ascorbic acid etc. Within 12 hours I notice immediate affect on my skin. Around my neck, it gets red, my skin gets a bit clammy - around the hair follicles on my face/neck some redness and sometimes puss (because I strictly control my diet and this only ever happens after I consume something with an E3xx I know this is the cause), I will cut myself shaving etc, i can also get sores in my mouth. I'm quite interested that your dentist thinks the reaction starts in the flora of the mouth - I have started having this hypothesis myself recently and testing that if I rinse my mouth out and brush my teeth immediately after having anything like this the symptoms don't seem to occur - i'm not 100% sure this is the solution though, but is interesting to have someone else suggest it.
I have known for 30 plus years that I get extreme sinus headaches from vitamin C - in pills, lemonade, grapefruit, etc. I can tolerate a small amount but not more than that. Have only met two other people who found they were also allergic to it.
Vitamin C does NOT cause kidney stones. Studies that indicate this are flawed and were not done in a way necessary properly distinguish any link.

You should really try pure ascorbic acid powder rather than tablet form, which contains many fillers and emulsifiers that may be a contributing factor. Also, vitamin C in doses of 10,000+ mg can completely stop allergic reactions such as yours and it is one of the strongest antihistamines there is.
It's probably a reaction to soy. Go to allergist and get tested for soy allergy. magnesium stearate and stearic acid along with tocopherol acetate and natural flavors are all hidden soy derivatives. You are not allergic to the vitamins, but the binders...which can be in vitamins and medications...
