Hi all, I'm glad I'm not the only person in the world who can't eat chicken.. Usually people look at you like you're crazy when you tell them you have adverse reactions! I'm in my mid-20s and have avoided chicken for about the past four years, ever since discovering it was what was making me sick (I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome at the age of sixteen).
As for me my symptoms seem a little different from the ones described, whenever I eat chicken, even a small amount, I wake up the next day with severe flu-like symptoms that last for several weeks. I have difficulty breathing, and a bizarre combination of overwhelming fatigue coupled with insomnia. Mainly it's the fatigue that bothers me, as it comes with aches and pains and it makes exercise and daily life difficult. At any rate I now avoid chicken at all costs.
Anyway I'm wondering if perhaps a small proportion of people diagnosed with CFS are actually suffering from a severe food allergy similar to mine?? It certainly pays to experiment with your diet/consult a naturopath or dietitian, as I would say my tiredness and poor health (which I was told by numerous doctors was caused by the rather vague culprit 'chronic fatigue') has improved 80-90% after avoiding chicken.
Thanks anyway, I've enjoyed reading your stories and have found them helpful!

I have been allergic to chicken, turkey, duck and all bird meats and associated food now for over 15 years. At first my family thought I was crazy; however, I had a serve allergic reaction during a Thanks Giving dinner about 14 years ago. Since that time I have been very careful to read all of the ingridents of foods I purchase to eat.
Some of my coworkers want to conduct an experiment because they don't believe I have chicken food allergy. Like I want to be sick and have my body producing excessive fluids. NO THANKS!
The hard part with a chicken allergy is you have to be careful where you go out to eat. Most restaurants cook their french fries in the same frier as their chicken. When I specify I have a food allergy to chicken the waiter/waitress typically gives me a funny look and proceeds as if they didn't hear me. Trust me when I say it is best to avoid the allergic reaction at a food establishment; just go with a baked potato.
I tend to eat on occasion low fat pork and beef products. Most of my diet is whole grains, dairy, veggies and fruit. I try not to eat too much meat. I try to stay all natural and avoid too many product additives.
Speaking of food allergies, my mom and her mom both have food allergies to corn syrup, vinger, any product with phosphate. My mom's diet is very strict and her allergies has greatly impacted her life. I look at her and know I could very well be in the same boat, so that is why I try to eat all natural foods.
The doctor I had growing up started me on a natural eating diet back in 2004. I wasn't that dedicated than. But now, I try to follow that diet as much as possible, because I believe that the more additives in the foods we eat the more likely we are to subject our selves to food allergies. The less c**p that our body takes the better it will be for us in the future.

I have a very mild but bizarre reaction to chicken. If i eat any fatty parts of the chicken, i will wake up after a couple of hrs of sleep, heart pounding, mind racing, and i'll be unable to go back to sleep for HOURS.
This affect is compounded by drinking beer with the fatty chicken... which makes my favourite "Beer & Chicken Wings" outing a very expensive vice :)
Similar to a couple of the other posts, i also have a reaction to bananas and kiwis. I researched that 'allergy' and was convinced that it's a latex allergy. See here:

Anyone else out there have a similar reaction to fatty chicken ??

Wow, my son (9 yrs) is allergic to chicken too. As a baby he was allergic to shrimp (still is) and eggs. He's been able to eat eggs but at age 5 couldn't eat chicken, it would give him terrible stomach pains. It seems he can grow out of eggs but not chicken. I guess the chicken/egg/shell/shellfish thing is happening. Good luck all. We just have 2 dinners most nights in our house.
I'm AMAZED!! I've only met a few people in my life allergic to chicken but not eggs. I'm also allergic to turkey and fish, but I can eat shell fish. The fish allergy only arose after I turned 30. I really miss salmon and grouper! My reactions are severe chest pain...anaphalaxis, swollen throat, itchy...and it lasts for about an hour. I totally understand everyone's statements about looking at the menu and seeing what's left after you delete chicken and also asking about ingredients in soup and such. I don't mind being a carnivore...I LOVE my steak and pork, but I know it can't be the best for me. If I become allergic to those...well....I just leave a note! LOL
BOYCOTT the poison bird!! LOL
Has anyone found anything that helps with the symptoms? Anything? Anyone? Beuller?

I can't eat chicken or turkey either. Ever since I was about nine years old, I suffered from horrible headaches. They continued as I got older. They were diagnosed as sinus, hormones, & migraine. Nothing but ice packs, and maybe Fiorinol with codeine, helped. The headaches followed the same pattern, and each one was usually a little worse than the last: I would wake up with a hard pain behind one of my ears and a very stuffy nose. At that point, I knew the day was shot. I couldn't stand light, sound, or smell. I felt clammy, and nasty/nauseated, but it wouldn't go any farther. By late afternoon, I felt a little better and would crave aspirin, caffeine, & chocolate. The next day I would be totally wiped out. I went through years of this.
Then I started noticing a pattern, along with some changes; I would wake up, not with just the pain behind an ear, but with the pain going farther and farther down into my back, along my spine (and spinal cord) each time. It felt like my brain was trying to get out between my eyes and I couldn't see. I started taking my temperature, which was going lower each time. The last time it was 93.9 degrees. I noticed that I would get these headaches 1-3 days after I ate chicken or turkey.
So about 25 years ago, I completely cut poultry, along with any chance of exposure, out of my life. Believe me, I read EVERY label and quiz EVERY waitress. There is chicken broth, fat, stock, and flavoring in everything from noodle mixes to potato chips--no kidding! Heat doesn't seem to kill whatever it is that makes me sick. I do everything possible to prevent exposure, including avoiding the deli, so I completely stopped getting the headaches. Recently, I went to Subway, and the worker tapped the dressing bottle down on the counter where she had just had the last customer's chicken and proceeded to pour it onto my sub. I walked out.
Maybe I didn't get sick every time, but to me, it's not worth the risk. The last time I got this headache was the result of an accidental exposure. I think if I stop being careful, it will kill me. Occasionally I hear of others who suffer from this, but I can never nail down an actual person ("I don't know, it was somebody at this party I was at.")
I've always felt that I could not be the only one who gets sick from eating chicken and turkey.

This info is very helpful. I ate chicken last week and my upper lip puffed up. I ate it again tonight and my lower lip puffed up. I usually only eat wild game so this was pretty scary. My lip(s) calmed down within about 18 hours but I think I won't be eating chicken again.
I just confirmed tonight my 12 yr old son is allergic to chicken the allergist has been in practice 17 years and said there are only "10 repoted cases" in the US. Apparently he hasnt looked at this site!! LOL
I did not think he was allergic. He doesnt have any of the symptoms mentioned here. His throat feels scratchy. He doesnt seem to have hives or headache either. He is also allergic to Turkey and eggs also came up positive, however he does eat eggs occasionally without a problem. We are just going to watch his diet now.
I posted about this in another reply to another question. Yes, you can have allergy to chicken. I was initially told I was allergic to eggs but not chicken. I won't be eating it any longer because I had a life threatening reaction today. I have over 25 food allergies and I keep Benadryl dissolve strips on me all the time. If it doesn't resolve the issue, then I have an Epipen. I thought I would have to call the ambulance today.
Between the ages of 5 and 6, I discovered that I am allergic to chicken, turkey, and fish. I had several anaphylactic reactions. However, I have never had a problem with eggs or shellfish. Lima beans and other dry beans used to be a problem, but I seem to have outgrown that allergy. The fish allergy seems to be waning (I am 35), and I can now eat most freshwater fish, but just the smell of marine fish--especially tuna--makes the mucous membranes in my nose itch. I am sorry to see that many others have the same allergies, but it's nice to know that I'm not alone. I have experienced many of the same social problems that arise with such an allergy.
I wish an allergist would post here with an opinion!!

Tartrazine, a real yellow menace; do some chicken farmers feed their chicken with foodstuff which contains Tartrazine?
Read the labels of the foodstuff you buy to see if they contain Tartrazine.

I don't get the symptoms that most of you describe here; but sometimes I got rash and itchy skin. I can't pinpoint whether it is caused by eating chicken or any other foodstuff because I often eat a variety of food. I suffer rash and itchy skin for many many years. A few months ago, after doing some research over the Internet, I found out that Tartrazine can cause rash and itchy skin ; so I stop eating foodstuff which contain tartrazine; so now I don't get rash and itchy skin so often, but I still get them once in a while; I eat chicken too, but I can't say whether or not the rash and itchy skin are caused by eating chicken, but I do have some suspicion about the chicken which may have been fed by chicken farmers with foodstuff containing Tartrazine.
I'm allergic to chicken as well as turkey. I'm 26 now and when I was much younger, around 5 or 6 and earlier, I remember having sandwiches called Chicken Little's at KFC. I also used to have a little bit of turkey around thanksgiving but not that I can consciously remember.
Then around 4th or 5th grade I remember having a hotdog during school. It was either at lunch or during class. It was story time and I noticed I developed a rash on my arms and legs. Since then, anything that has chicken does something to me depending on how much there is. Usually it amounts to a kind of heartburn feeling and a feeling like I'm getting a sore on the inside of my lip. The problem is that somehow I noticed that I enjoy hot wings...one time I had a craving and ordered a large helping around 10pm at night. I woke up around 3 am with THE WORST rash I've ever had. EVERYWHERE. Especially my scalp itched. I thought I might try taking a shower but the water both soothed my scalp and intensified the need to scratch.
The most recent times that I've noticed chicken is when there has been some kind of contamination or ingredients that I didn't know about in a couple Mexican restaurants (beef tacos etc), and nearly all frozen pizza. I don't understand why frozen pizza pepperoni must always include chicken and turkey but restaurants are pure beef. With this little amount though, I usually will only start to feel a sore in my mouth and slight heartburn.
I can eat eggs just fine.
I do notice that some fruits give me a similar itchy feeling in my mouth though. Most notably bananas.
I haven't tried anything like quail, pheasant, or duck yet to know.
I've never been tested, but it seems like a waste to me? Obviously I'm allergic...
