I just found out that my 7 yr old daughter is allergic to chicken and corn (more food allergy testing on Friday), however Im not sure that she gets the same symptoms as the rest of you.  She also has Hirschsprungs disease so she always has the diarrhea, stomach pain, etc. .  Her allergist says that the chicken causes eospinophilic esophagitis . . . which means her esophagus becomes inflamed so that she cant swollow.  It doesnt effect her breathing at all and no rashes or itching.

I also have a chicken allergy, and no, I'm not lying either. I have other food allergies too,but when I eat chicken I get congested and have trouble breathing within three to four hours after I eat it. I have tested it many times, thinking that it was something else I ate, but each time the chicken was the only common item. So , I don't eat chicken, and yes, people don't believe me either. So cut her a break, I'm sure she doesn't like having the allergy .

Hi,
My wife has developed the same problem. She was refered to a Gastroentorogist and he has never herd of it. He needs to do some research on here!
Its got so bad now that even if we go to someones house and my wife accepts a cup of tea. If the cup has not been thoughly washed, the rim of the cup is enough to give her stomach cramps and bloatness.
There must be an antidot somewhere?

My girlfriend is not eating chicken at all! Anyone heard of chicken allergy? Its not that I do not believe her, but I simply did not hear for this allergy. That would explain her not eating when we go to parties and similar events. Anyway, how serious is this illness? Is there a cure? Can I help her?

I have chicken allergy as well. My main symptom is that I throw up after a few hours of injestion. I believe the allergen responsible is a protein. To date I have not heard of a cure. However I have not given up as there are researchers working on allergens and possible cures. In the meatime I suggest your girlfriend afford chicken meat and possibly an allergen test to confirm.

Yes!!!! I too am allergic to chicken and have endured everything from intentionally being mislead to believing there was no chicken in a certain food (because it’s all in my head) to the ever popular…”I couldn’t survive without chicken.”<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I was approximately 12-years old (currently 37) and chicken Mc Nuggets with barbecue dipping sauce were the greatest thing to eat on earth…when on my way back from a week in San Felipe we stopped by a McDonalds in Calexico, CA. Needless to say, starved…I quickly downed the Mc Nuggets and got really sick, this is my first memory of my chicken allergy.

Symptoms: First, I start to salivate heavily, I develop a pain in my chest, swallowing becomes difficult (but not a swollen tongue), and I’ll eventually throw up. At the end of the ordeal, I end up feeling exhausted. I have noticed that over time, my reactions have worsened a bit…Benadryl helps if taken immediately.

*Once I touched a chicken sandwich and accidently rubbed my eye and it swelled up pretty good.

So, there you go…I’m ok with not eating chicken…just have to be careful when eating enchiladas (chicken stock in the sauce), hot dogs, frozen pizza’s and yes…Chinese food.

Take care all,

-Luis

Hello.

I was so glad to see that I am not as weird as I thought.  ("Allergy to chicken?  Right?" : /)  I can eat it once in a while without much of a problem, but if I have it at more than one meal, I get very sick to my stomach.  I have people say that it is just salmonella food poisoning but I know that isn't the problem.  I have had food poisoning before and this is not the same.  I haven't had the anaphylactic problems that some people have mentioned but I did get hives at one time.  I am also allergic to strawberries (even just the juice, as well as the whole berry), and most antibiotics (the -cillins, and -mycins).  I sometimes wonder if there may be something to the antibiotics in the chicken feed theory.

My sensitivity seems to change in severity as well.  For example, about 12 years ago I would grab a 4 piece chicken nuggets for dinner between work and a class I was attending 2 days a week.  First week, no problem.  The next week, my stomach started acting up; and then I started breaking out in hives.   My husband, then fiance, and I figured it was just the McD's nuggets because I was able to eat other chicken without much trouble.  Figured whatever oil or spices they used.  So I stopped eating them for about 5 years.  Then...Boom...I could eat them again.  Figured recipe changed.  Lately I have had problems with chicken again.  Within a few hours of eating, my stomach gets very ill.  My youngest child seems to have a problem occasionally too.

So...Allergy...Sensitivity...Intolerance...whatever.  It is real and it is great (well, you know what I mean) to know that it is not just my imagination.  I don't really know if any of the medical entities are ever going to look into this phenomenon, it seems pretty low on the priority list.  Meanwhile, I will just keep stocked up on Benedryl and be careful not to eat too much chicken.

I too am Allergic to Chicken. It's nice to know I am not alone! Many people when I tell them about my allergy look at me like I have 3 heads lol
Thankfully I am not allergic to Eggs (wierd).
I and my family ate chicken all while I grew up. I loved it, it was a weekly staple in my mother's kitchen.
Both my older brother and I became allergic to it between 18-20. My Brother's seems to fluxuate between a severe reaction if he eats too much within say like a week period; he'll begin to get red, puffy and his throat gets tight and itchy.
For me it has progressed to the point of annafalaxis (spelling?) within minutes if I have Chicken meat, broth, byproduct, or have food that by cross contamination, (ie: most restaraunt grills), has had Chicken Grease cook into other meats. I even had someone I was dating make a bowl of Ramen Chicken flavor noodles and after stiring in the broth mix; forgot and came out of the kitchen and gave me a deep kiss; yes, that sent me to the hospital. I carry an Eppie pen.
I pretty much have to be hyper vigilante about what I eat and I am constantly checking ingredients in proccessed food at the grocery store etc. Same with restaraunts; it's now nearly like a Mantra; I tell my server everytime I go out to eat that I have a severe allergy to chicken and usually they can accomodate by cooking my food on seperate pans, using one set of utensils to cook just my food etc.
The only thing I don't to really have a problem with is say, Fries or stuff like that, even if it is cooked in the same vat of oil that chicken has been as well I don't seem to get a reaction; perhaps it's a heat thing; I don't know. (Not that I am suggesting others try it.)
Aside from my brother I have not come across anyone else who seems to go through anafalaxis (again spelling, sorry) shock, but I have been hearing more about people who seem to have this allergy pop up out of nowhere.....
For myself; I have had to cut chicken completely out of my diet. I miss it sometimes but would rather eat turkey or that fake chicken stuff (made out of soy? some of the brands aren't bad!), than die lol

No one here is alone. Every time I have to tell someone I can't have chicken in or around my food they act like I am persnickety or a loon. But according to my extremely brilliant and informed Doctor, it's not that uncommon. There are 2 types of reaction. A chicken allergy causes swelling, hives and chest problems, much like a nut allergy. A chicken intolerance (my unfortunate condition) causes cramping, diarrhea and vomiting, much like lactose intolerance. Unfortunately, many doctors are not necessarily up to date on all research being done in all fields. Science is broad. The more you inform your doctor about your symptoms, the more likely the demand for research will be heeded. For now, vigilance about what you put into your body is the only cure. Good health!

I didn't realize it was as common as this thread is suggesting, but then with the internet, I suppose a quick google search will lead us all here.

I have the allergy as well, although it also applies to turkey, quail, pheasant, and duck. I'm curious about Ostrich, as it might be far enough away genetically, but I don't want to risk it. Generally speaking, I get urticaria, slight swelling in my throat, and indigestion in the form of cramping. When someone is cooking it, I can get congested if I'm nearby. One time my eyes went bright red, presumably from the increase in blood pressure, and it looked like I had been smoking cannabis all night. I can have trace amounts up to the size of my pinky fingernail, but I otherwise just avoid it entirely.

I'm curious about about the protein that causes it, because eggs are completely fine. It's a shame, too, as I'm a bit of a health nut and chicken/turkey are excellent forms of lean protein.

Hi I am also allergic to Chicken and not eggs. Japanese researchers have isloated the protein. Different for eggs. So the difference. I have not tried Turkey or Duck thinking I would be allergeric to all poultry. How do you go with Turkey?

I ate chicken nuggets for lunch yesterday, and I am in excruciating pain at the moment. I have a sore stomach and a migrane. I am not sure wether this could or is classed as chicken allergy, but I have never been a big fan of chicken. I also ate chicken wraps for tea last night. I have never been a big fan of peas either. I just hope I feel better soon.

yes there is a chicken allergy, mine was so high I could not be vaccinated. I have not eaten chicken since the 1980's. the symptoms I suffer are severe migraines, however it isn't only the meat I am allergic to it is also the smell, the trucks, the houses, etc. It all affects my breathing and gives me a migraine.
