I am 4 weeks out from sigmoid removal and my incision area is bloated but I feel great! I sleep anyway I want, eat anything I want, small amounts. Have not tried popcorn or alcohol yet. From reading all of these posts I think every single person is much different there are no set rules for this for anyone, I don't eat raw veggies or dense meat yet, but I have been eating apples and oranges and bananas from week 2. I had an active life and profession and now I do sit around and read a lot and net flix binge, but after my 8 week healing I hope to get back to normal? The "new" normal. Surgeon and his nurse have been absolutely no help at all. The best thing is an anti inflammatory diet, probiotics, Metamucil and lots of water! I also take turmeric, vit. D. mag citrate, krill oil and eat a lot of fish.It is absolutely essential to walk at least 1/2 mile every day to get rid of the bloating. My daughter is a dietitian and if she sees me eat anything with sugar she give me the riot act. No sugar it causes inflammation. All of this is better then multiple attacks of diverticulitis and antibiotics. So walk that bloat off, drink a lot of water and eliminate anything that causes inflammation in the body like sugar. I think after 6 months you should not still be having all of those bloating problems a visit to your surgeon might be needed too.
My husbandd found using lactose free milk helped him, he can eat most foods, but when he went back to reg milk, had problems with running to the loo. Maybe worth a try, although every one is different.
Wow! Thank you so much. I am 4 years out of my colon resection. I am better but I don't eat unless I'm home. How the surgeon could keep telling me to eat more fiber is crazy. I've learned that I need low fiber. I'll try the Metamucil. I eat cheese and sugar constantly. Guess I'll have to change. Thank you!!
Hi I'm tim vandevoorde I had the same surgery done 3 weeks ago after Dr White was finished I was in Sherman hospital for 5 to 6 days and while there they started me out on a liquid diet ice chips etc then he changed it to a soft diet chicken broth etc then solid food and Dr White said that I can have whatever I want to eat
Hi all! Just chiming in with my experience. I had Ulcerative Colitis then wound up having surgery to remove my large intestine ( lwft a sm@alll segment of the rectumd) created a "J-Pouch" using my small intestine. Then take-down 2 months later. I recall getting very little in regards to diet as well. Lots of trial and error. I ate whatever I could get away with. Now, over 15 years later I know what to avoid if I don't want to experience burning or major discomfort with BM's. For me it's spicy foods especially prepared spicy tomato sauces. I do make my own chili with tomato-based sauce but it doesn't bother me as much. I steer from popcorn and corn. Ironically, I consume tons of greens, fresh veggies, and nuts. I have to wonder what I get from it though as I jokingly named myself "salad shooter". A problem of late as I go through menopause is feeling tired. My skin and hair is becoming more brittle with age...normal or accelerated due to my history? Anyway, a previous comment regarding B12 levels fluxuating was helpful and I should keep an eye on that. I drink lots of water and try not to consume c**p....sugar, processed, high fat/grease). In other words be good to your body. I am fortunate to be able to live a very healthy life post colon removal. To celebrate, I ran a half marathon in Las Vegas fundraising for Crohn's and Colitis. Good health to all of you out there struggling...hang in there.
Well it will be 5 years for me in August 2017...I have found that everyone is different, and one has to expect to visit the loo often! Not diarrhoea...Imodium helps when you are visiting too many times. I eat citrus and drink fresh grapefruit and orange juice daily but stay away from leafy green vegetables and chick peas. Baked beans are a no no but tomatoes and onions I can't live without so I just go ahead and eat them...the best thing to drink is Lassi, a yoghourt drink which is made up of plain yoghourt, water, salt and cumin seeds - delicious! I am not a fan of sugar...Any meat, fish, eggs, is fine and of course the main staple is potato! I drink alcohol but in moderation and drink black coffee and truck driver's tea! I eat a lot of spicy food including lentils and rice is fine. Stay away from the green chillies! Trial and error. I have found that some days I can get away with lettuce and some days I can't and apples are a thing of the past...good luck!
Hello semicolon2145073, thank you so much for all your help. I am on my 10th-day pos-op, suffering all the pains you mentioned... I think we all know very little about the intestines and its functioning, It's almost a second brain. Willful. I found a site and learnt about each of its components. This study gave me the knowledge and I could understand all my pains. I'll have to undergo adjuvant chemo and I thank you for the booklet. All the best,
sigmoidectomy29May17.

I am into 4th week of removal of 4Ocm of colon and I am.following almost exactly the same diet as you have mentioned . Little and often and sometimes jars of Baby food. I also make sure I walk regularly ..not far as an still feeling very tired but with the support belt I find it easier . The walking encourages the bowels to work . Good luck with recovery
I had a resection Sept, 2016. At first i was on a soft diet. I felt great and really did not have any pain or problems except for Constipation after eating Corn, Peanuts, Popcorn. I don't think i can eat those without getting backed up. About a month ago i ended up in ER because of Constipation. I saw my Surgeon last week and he suggested taking Miralax every night before bed. I also had to have surgery because of Chronic Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis w IBS. So i just started the Miralax and after 3 doses things are starting to move but still not the daily B M. I try to eat light but it seems unless i eat about a half of a meal, i am bloated, extremely uncomfortable. I am thinking i have to learn to stay away from the things that cause me a problem w constipation, eat small amount so i can feel better and have bowels moving more frequently and easier. Dr wants to do a scope next month. Has anyone else had the same problems w constipation? Unable to eat nuts, corn?
I had my colon resection surgery 4 years ago and I still can eat these things without getting a blockage and I end up in pain for days and vomiting for hours on end.
Beef of any kind
Beans
Vinegar
Corn or popcorn
Broccoli
cabbage
for whatever reason MSG
I have just begun to eat the skins on things such as: Potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant.
I have always been able to eat Pizza, go figure, it's my go to food.
When I eat something that I can't tolerate I end up eating mashed potatoes and jello for about 3 days until the pain subsides. My Dr told me that if I am vomiting but not passing gas or having a bowel movement at all then it's an obstruction and if it gets to painful I need to go to the ER. But I have never done this, I just get thru the 12 hours or so of vomiting and put myself on a liquid diet for a couple of days and then proceed to eat the jello and potatoes until I do actually have a bowel movement.
This is my process, now the funny thing is that my dr. seems surprised that I can't tolerate any type of beef or ground turkey, chicken, or pork for that matter. But I am just grateful for my life, so giving up these things are fine. But I do miss Steak and meatballs lol. Not sure if this will help you but I guess it's trail and error and the error sucks big time. I've had times where I ate mushrooms and ended up vomiting all night. I've eaten malt vinegar on my fish and vomited all night. It just depends. The longer since your surgery the better you'll feel. Like I said I can now eat things that I couldn't 2 years ago. Chinese food is still a no no for me, just learned that a couple of weeks ago, but we have to do these little test all the time just to see what may have changed.
Good luck and trust that these forums know much more than the drs.lol when it comes to what you can and can not eat.

I have been eating low residue diet but it's been 3 days no bm . Has any one else faced thi ? If so what did you do ?
I was told to take 2 stool softners without laxative everyday and thats what I did. It kept me regular with no diarrhea.
I am out of surgery 2 weeks now. I am trying to eat the right foods, I had a blockage in the hospital and had to have a GI Tube for 2 days. Now I'm afraid if my bowels are not working all the time I panic. I am passing gas. I eat a prune or two a day. Is this bad.
