That's crazy and I completely thank you and relate. Cheap vodka is doing it to me now and I have also been at a loss as to who what how or why. Now at least someone else can relate. Thank you for sharing I don't feel so alone now.

I've got the same problem. Occasionally when drinking hard liquor I'll get the pain in my upper back and shoulders to the point where I just have to go lay down.I get overheated as well, and it might sound crazy but I get some relief by either submerging the upper part of my head in cold water or running cold water on my forehead. I'm a diabetic man, and can't seem to find a reason for any of this, but a really good belch from the gut also helps relieve the shoulder pain which makes me think it's some kind of gas caused by the alchohol.

Lol. I have the sneeze thing too. The acronym for this condition is ACHOO. I KNOW it's an old thread but it made me laugh finding another weirdo sneezer.

Please get checked by your doctor for Hodgkin's. This pain is one of the first symptoms of this disease.

Omg! After reading your post, i can totally relate!! I have these horrible shoulder tightening at times too, but it's when I'm drinking a sugary drink. Tonight I'm drinking the pineapple Bacardi for a change and I notice it's very sweet, on top of that I'm drinking it with a regular coke. I usually drink diet but I was out. After2 drinks, my shoulders started tightening up again. Im really starting to believe it has to do with the sugar. It never happens to me when I'm drinking beer or taking shots of crown of even margaritas. I will seriously start to take notice of what I'm drinking and when my pains come on. I've always wondered what caused this.....

While most everyone here seems to be affected totally by sugar, my ice-pick, stabbing pain occurs when I consume alcohol of ANY kind when my head/neck/shoulders already have underlying pain, typically from rain. So, because I am extremely sensitive to rain, humidity and barometric pressure, I cannot plan on drinking alcohol under these conditions. Friends think I'm nuts. And while I've become extremely sensitive to dairy, sugar and most fruits and vegetables (IBS complications due to fibromyalgia), and my stomach swells to the size of a 5-month pregnancy when I consume these products), none of them cause the stabbing pain in my head/neck/shoulders I get when sipping an alcoholic beverage. So much for trying to relax my muscle spasms and dull my 24/7 pain. Does anyone else get sharp, stabbing, debilitating pain starting in the occipital nerves and blood vessels along the temples when they take a drink??? I'm inclined to believe it is somehow related to blood vessel constriction in my case, and then it radiates down into my shoulder. Many times I've thought I'm having a brain aneurysm because the pain is so severe. And it occurs with a single sip. Doctors don't seem to care about this bizarre symptom, but I'm more concerned with the underlying cause. Is it indicative of yet another illness? That's what I'd like to know. This symptom started at least 6 yrs. ago and I haven't encountered a single plausible explanation yet.

I had similar episodes spread across last 4 yrs however I could notice a trend
1. Hard Spirit
2. If I am not fully hydrated or had v little water throughout the day
3. Spicy snacks along

I read a lot of posts and could boil down to following steps
1. With hard liquor spl when not spaced out in time leads to high acidity which one may not realise being high on liquor. Immediately take an antacids such as pepfizz gelucill eno or any locally available and follow up with a lot of water. If you are ok with this in 15-20 min then feel lucky that it's only acidity.

2. If this comes as a follow-on pain then there may be either prolonged stomach issue like an ulcer which must be ruled out by a doctor

3. Still doesn't help then you must speak to the doctor and rule out a type of cancer called Hodgkin's lymphoma. Good part of this illness is that the occurrence is rare but the probability of cure is v.high.

Best of luck.

I get the exact same thing. It hurts and it is very unpleasant. I feel for you. Doesn't effect me most of the time but like you said, sugary drinks seem to make it worse.

I get really bad pain also but in under my collarbone and in the pit of my stomach!..lasts for about 20 mins or so and then leaves!..terrible pain and so uncomfortable!...I do find though, that this only happens if I drink fast and if the alcohol had Ice!...and sometimes if I drink something warm the pain dissipates faster!..I can continue to drink once the pain subsides and I don’t get it anymore after that initial reaction, for the remainder of the evening!...it’s funny because my grandfather could never drink cold alcohol and he would say for that very reason!...I inherited it from him I suppose!...

Sounds like me when I was a teenager and drank whiskey I would get a pain in the lower part of the back of my neck. I'm 52 years old now and believe the pain is similar to heart burn just in the back of my neck. Praise God I don't drink anymore!
