Final update on my condition. AS of today it is two weeks since the onset of that horrible taste. I think its 100% gone at this point, though every now and then I think I get a hint of it. I am gonna go with 10 days to two weeks was how long my episode lasted. I have eaten pesto with pine nuts since and the taste has not returned. Matter of fact I just ate pest on Friday (three days ago) and again last night….no ill effects to report. I believe my issue was definitely caused by either bad\old\rancid pine nuts, or where they came from. Unfortunately I do not know where mine came from but they were Badia brand. Good luck to all. Good news is that I am still alive and eating pesto. Thank God!

What type of ginger? Fresh and grated, powdered, etc. I tried it with powdered and just couldn't do it. It was too strong for my stomache to handle :cry:

I am now hearing people are using acidopholous. Wonder if that may work?

Well, count me in as another victim of Pine Nut Poisoning!!! I noticed that lately, everything was tasting soapy--solid food or drink...and I thought that maybe I had a sinus infection since I was just on an airplane and my ears hurt during landing, and were kind of stuffed up for a day or two after getting home. But now, thinking back on what I fixed for dinner a few days ago, I did put some TJ's Pine Nuts (and yes, they were the ones that had the Dec 09 pull date on them, sourced from Russia/Viet Nam/Korea) on some pasta I made a couple of nights ago. I do remember biting into one particularly bad pine-nut, and spit it out; it was tough and bitter. So at least I know I am not alone in the soapy/metallic taste thing. Whew! Well, I might as well be added to the list too. My bitter taste lasted nearly 2 weeks before it finally went away. The pine nuts that I ate came from one of those bulk bins at my local market. I should ask at the store if anyone else has had the same problem. Maybe they can tell me where the nuts originated. I'm also going to print out some of these feeds and show them to my doctor next time I see him.

I was paranoid I had some sort of allergy to sugar because everytime I ate something sweet I had this nasty bitter aftertaste in my mouth. After searching the internet for a short while I came across this post and was convinced this is what my problem is. It is far too coincidental to be anything else. I went to Costco 4 days ago and they had a huge sample of pine nuts they were giving out and I even remarked to my wife that they seemed like abnormally large samples considering how expensive the pine nuts are. I ate most of them and did think anything more of it until I read this post. I mentioned to my wife that I have been having a weird metallic taste in my mouth that always seemed really strong after eating, especially if it was something sweet. Glad to know what is actually causing the problem and that it will go away with time.

thanks to all for putting my mind at rest. I have had the taste for over a week. Not sure if it's subsided any but there's a relief in knowing what's caused it and that i'm not alone! Some points I would add to the discussion -

I am blood type A+ People have made claims on other threads that it is/isn't blood type related. There isn't enough evidence to suggest either and should be disregarded.

I experience the bitter taste a few seconds after eating. It is particulalrly unpleasant when I try to eat chocolate and I find the taste occurs in the top and back of the mouth. When I drink water, it doesn't taste quite so bad.

For what it's worth, if a toxin has been put in the body, then ginger is seen as a good cleanser and plenty of water to flush the system is a no brainer. I am going to my local health shop later to get advice on how best to get antioxidants into the system and will be drinking plenty of water. I note that other people have used alpha lipoic and parotid with success, si they might be worth a go!

Just wondering if anyone has gone to a doctor with these symptoms and gotten a reason for this reaction in some people, not others. I ate pine nuts at a very nice restaurant last week. I got the awful taste in my mouth 2 days later and it has not yet gone away (5 days). Also curious if anyone else who has gotten this reaction is also allergic to artificial sweeteners as I am.

What can this be? this is the second time i have experienced this recently, i first thought it was bad miso, then thought it may be mercury poisoning, then i thought when it happened the second time it may be down to chemicals from preservatives or other food treatment chemicals in avocados? I have just read this topic and perhaps it is pine nuts, but why? I can say that the last pack of pine nuts i bought were from carrefour which is a large but cheap supermarket in europe, these pine nuts were especially large. Is it possible something happened to them during some type of treatment? The only other time something similar happened was one year ago when i bought some bananas and some semi fresh cartoned fruit juice in the north of Norway, i thought that it was that the bananas had been at the bottom of the container at the bottom of the ship (as north of Norway would be a final stop) and had soaked some preservative in deep into the flesh, i imagined the bananas had been almost swimming in preservative at the bottom of the ship after crossing the ocean, the pine nut theory is interesting, i wonder if there are large batches which could have been somehow contaminated, i hope they are not coming from a nuclear fall out area or an area high in mercury contanimation, hope it's not pesticides or fertiliser? Can anyone come up with a natural reason for this with pinenuts. Perhaps it's Swine nut flu......

I, too, have the bitter taste after eating small pine nuts in a pesto wrap three days ago. The taste started about 36 hours after I ate them. Crazy thing! I haven't found any natural reason yet for why the nuts do this, but I take comfort in the fact that others have experienced it and have gotten rid of it. Anyway, great posts! I thought perhaps my wife was poisoning me!

Let me tell you , I think that there may be something in pine nuts that has a bitter taste in some people because I swear that I have done nothing but give them a fair shot and they're always bad. What do you think?

Who'da thunk it?! I had no idea what the tinny taste in mouth after eating could be, like everyone else I had feared some insidious illness. For the informal survey, I am blood type O+ although that didn't prove exclusive, and the 'taste' came 2 days after snacking on Kirkland brand pine nuts from Costco while making 3 batches of pesto. My room mate detected an aftertaste in my bag of pine nuts that was not in hers, and my pesto had taken on that same taste. As for what helped, the aftertaste was much less to none eating scrambled eggs topped with muenster cheese and drinking water. The post that mentioned rinsing your mouth out with salt water made me start looking around for something salty, which I enjoyed eating about 1/2 the bag, savoring the salty-ness and woke up this morning without the bad taste! However a hint of it came back while eating Chinese at lunchtime and a cold coffee later this afternoon. I only had the one day of real bad taste. Hope it helps!

I think that's a pretty good method! I think I'll try that out if I have a bad taste in my mouth. Thanks for your insight okay :)

Thank Goodness I googled this subject! For the last couple of days I've had this discusting almost "soapy" taste in my mouth. I bought a ready prepared pasta salad with spinage & pine nuts friday lunch and the strange taste started sunday morning! Must be the pine nuts! I too am blood type O - how strange! Although on a more possitive note I think I've discovered my new weight loss secret!

I've had the same symptoms for 24 hours and was getting a little concerned. Decided to google "bitter taste in mouth" and was lucky enough to come upon this forum. I have always enjoyed pesto/pinenuts, and had a good handful two days ago. Within 24 hours the symtoms started and have not abated. I'm glad to know that they are not permanent and not serious. By the way, I've never heard of this before, and I'm a physician.

I'm on the same boat, folks. Bought some pine nuts by weight from a fresh food market at Flemmington Markets in Sydney. The guy was selling to varieties. One type was larger paler looking nuts. The other was smaller and a bit grey looking in color. After tasting both, I bought the smaller looking variety on Saturday and has a few handfuls. The bad taste started on Sunday night and is still with me today Tuesday. I ate my last handful just before reading this post. :-( I'm now dreading the next 2 weeks... Off to buy some ginger, me thinks...
