I am 27 with 3 children. The third is now 3 months old and I have had the same symptoms for 6 weeks. I don't know what to do but I really wish someone had some idea of whats going on!! Help!
GO TO THE DOCTOR. Your foster parents would rather have you healthy!
First of all, I, too have these symptoms, only I have lived with IBS for many many years. The doctor has scheduled me for a colonoscopy and endoscopy to find out where it's coming from. Most of you are all Gloom and doom, but your doctor should have told you that this symptom has many causes, from hemorrhoids to cancer, so you need to be persistent with your doctor until they have the correct, PRECISE answer, don't, under any circumstances take "we just don't know" as an answer! If it's controlling your life, take control of it, and get a strait answer!
You all need to keep hounding your doctors!!!

Hello, I'm 26 years old and i've had the same symptoms, I also have a 20 month old girl and this has started about 1 year after having her- the mucus and bloody stools. I went to my doctor and she gave me an exam and said it was a fissure, she perscribed me some cream and some stool softeners. I've used both and still the same, she said it could be due to a hard stool, but I told her it's not painful at all and that I eat enough fiber so my stools aren't hard. I'm clueless, I've always been healthy.....
Wow, this post has been going on for a while, but I guess people are still responding.
There are many reasons for bloody stool with mucus, and most have been mentioned here. In my case (40 yr old male), it has been a condition on and off for nearly 20 years - have had sigs and regular colonoscopies, the last one about 3 years ago. They never find anything, and the symptoms disappear for sometimes years at a time.
In my case it is a combination of an anal fissure and stress - I expect it is the same for most of us.
Red blood incicates bleeding in the lower part of the digestive tract - if the stool is black, it is digested blood and can be a host of other things
THE IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER is that the symptoms are pretty much the same for more serious conditions, such as cancer. So if it comes back, go back to your doctor even if everything was "fine" the last time.
Don't die of embarassement, literally.

I am amazed to see all these posts. I thought I was the only one :-) I began with all the symptoms mentioned (blood, tons of mucus, gas, urgency) while I was pregnant with my second child. It continued for a few months following his birth. However, coincidentially, he showed up with an allergy to milk (blood in his stool). Since, I was nursing, I had to stop ingesting any dairy products. Little did I know, that would be the cure to my problem. I was taking meds for it, originally. It would always reappear if I skpped a few days.......hard to keep up on enemas daily. The removal of dairy has kept it away so far. It has been 8 months. Hope that helps.
This post has been helpful for me. I am 30 and just started passing stools with mucous and blood. Usually I am always constipated and do not have a BM for at least 3-5 days. I am under a lot of stress right now and usually hold all my stress in my stomach. So I think the stress has something to do with this problem. It is amazing what stress and depression can do to our bodies. Stress can literally kill a person. I guess I need to figure out a way to destress and maybe these symptoms will go away.
I see a few trends:
1) We seem to be women
2) A few have noticed symptoms after a 2nd or 3rd delivery
3) High levels of stress
I have all of the above!! it started out with just a need to go and an uncomfortable stomach a few days ago. Yesterday I noticed bloody mucous stool and that freaked me out. I had a very complicated second pregnancy and we almost lost her several times. My first one was 9 pounds and 41 weeks so this was a complete surprise. Baby #2 was born at 25 weeks vaginally and my bowel movements have not been the same since... I wonder if it is related... If anyone finds an answer please post! I will be seeing my doctor soon.

Wow I am not alone - mucus stools - many times per day - not diarrhea- and very gassy - for some reason more gassy in evening.
I have had 2 children, but the last one was 10 years ago. I am under extra stress at work. I have thought it was related to diet - but couldn't isolate it.
I will try to stop diary temporarily.
I also read something today that "with bacterial overgrowth, bloating and gas usually worsen after eating any sugar including in foods such as bread, pasta, rye, rice, or milk (lactose being a type of sugar)" - this was in a post about mucous in stools.
I guess it would be best to check it out with the doctor.
I will keep checking here!

I am a 32 year old female. I have had 4 children ranging from 3-11 years of age. I have been having the same symptoms described by all the posts one here...excessive, ongoing bloody mucous (in addition to bright red blood associated with a hemorrhoid), excessive gas, abdominal pain, back pain, and crampy feeling (even though I am post-surgical menopausal and no longer have a monthly cycle). I would not consider myself to be either constipated or having diarrhea. I had surgery a year ago to correct rectal problems associated with an extreme epistemology with my first child due to the urgency of delivery caused by the cord wrapped around his neck. However, a year after my surgery, my symptoms are just as bad as they were before. I have increased fiber, eliminated dairy, and have tried as best I could to not irritate my bowels by straining (though most of the time I just pass bloody mucous) anymore than possible. Things have not improved and in fact have only worsened. The pain effects more than just my lower left abdomen. It also causes severe lower back pain. This has been ongoing for over 2 years...I am tired of going to the doctor and the GI...any home remedies that have helped? Any advice would be appreciated.
Again, exact same thing and another female in my 30s. I hate this, and I'm scared of all the tests involved. I find I'm consistently constipated, and even if I have to go to the loo quickly, I still am. It's usually after that has happened that an hour or so later the mucous comes. Sometimes there's a tiny spot of blood as well. It feels horrible, very unsexy and I worry so much.
I am glad to find I'm not alone though. Was thinking a lot of you are new mums or at least mums anyway, but I'm not, have never even been pregnant - so I don't think the problem lies there.
Please let me know if any of you get anywhere regarding a diangosis...

Hi, I am a 34 year old female with three children, the youngest being just 6 months. During my last pregnancy I noticed that my stools were covered with a white web like substance. I thought that it was probably something to do with the medication I was taking at the time for severe heartburn and just dismissed it. It was not until a few months after giving birth that I noticed that I was still passing stools covered in a mucus, however the mucus had changed in colour to more of a green/brown. I then started to notice that I was passing more and more mucus and that it was starting to be streaked with blood. I started to become very worried and went to my doctor who referred me to the hospital for an internal examination. This I had and although the registrar could see that I had internal hemorrhoids, she said that they were not inflamed and so could not be sure that this was the source of the blood and mucus. Therefore I was referred for a colonoscopy. I had the colonoscopy and a number of biopsies were taken, which all came back clear. I therefore went back to my doctor as I was still experiencing a lot of blood and mucus which was also accompanied by bouts of gas. I provided a stool sample which was sent off and also came back completely clear. After talking at length with my doctor we are both in agreement that it must be the internal hemorrhoids. I am now going through various treatments to try and control the symptoms. I have tried suppositories which didn't work as they are mainly to control pain and inflammation, both of which I am not experiencing. I have just been trying another form of medication which is a steroid foam. Again this has not worked. If anything the amount of blood has increased and the mucus has decreased. I will be back to my doctor in the new year, however feel that removal of the hemorrhoids may be the only cure.
I wanted to post this as I visited this site when I was in the throws of feeling extremely worried that I may have a serious illness, however was relieved to find so many people experiencing the same problem. It was also strange how the majority were females in their thirties who had children. What threw me with my symptoms was that I felt perfectly fine in every other aspect and that I was experiencing no real pain, therefore I couldn't match my symptoms to any particular condition. I hope that this helps anyone going through what I am. It is very important to get yourself checked out if you do pass blood as there are many things it could be. However, if everything sinister is ruled out then get your doctor to check for internal hemorrhoids.

I am a 27 year old female and have recently started having the same symptoms ( increased gas pressure, mucus and blood in stool, diarrhea, urgency to go to the bathroom with nothing coming out or just bloody mucus). I am really concerned with what is causing these problems, but I have no medical insurance so can not afford to have multiple tests run. I was wondering if anyone could help with a possible answer or even a home remedy that i cold try. I am ready for some relief.
I am a 32 year old female who gave birth to baby #7 4 weeks ago by c-section after hours of hard laboring. During c-section doc. cut my bladder, now bladder repair surgery. I had to come home with a catheter for two weeks. Soon after removal of catheter I began to have major problems with rectal bleeding and rectum was so swollen I couldn't even pass stool. I started using hemroidal suppositories(the first day or so I could barely get one to go in) which helped relieve swelling and bleeding after 1 week. For the past two weeks I have had a feeling of urgency so strong it feels like a contraction, then stools very thick with mucous. I spend so much time sitting on the toilet pushing, now my abdominal incision area from c-section even feels strained. I am very nervous as we just lost our medical insurance.
Recently for like the last 4 months I have had bad cramping on my right side like I did I million sit ups...I went to doc they did everything but scope said it all looked normal well 4 months later I still have this pain its very annoying sometimes very painful..Now I have also noticed a increase of urgency..and today there was mucus an blood I thought I had my period but then I realized that's not where its coming from..I am thinking the two are linked does anyone have any of these issues an what do think it could be? I am an unlucky person who also is with out insurance so I am wondering how important this might be an what to do!! I am very worried!! oh I forgot to mention I am 30 I have had three children all C section
Unlike most of you, I'm 51 and my last child was born 22 years ago with no complications from either of my children. I'm also happily married have a great job and great kids. So stress isn't a factor either. I rarely eat dairy products, am not overweight, but I do like a glass of wine in the evenings. As a matter of fact, my life couldn't be going any better until this problem showed up. Like all of you, i have blood in my stools, in the mucus and sometimes just blood. A lot of blood. Now I've had to go to wearing pads because I never know if even a little gas is going to show thru my pants. I have a history of diverticulitis, but it's never really given me to much trouble. Some one mentioned symptoms that cam gp omtp ipri eshophgus as well and I've had problems with sore sort fo reflux that just burns going up. Don't know if these are related, but you have convinced me to check it out to be on the safe side.
