I don't understand why there aren't any answers about this anywhere on the internet...because you should be able to get any information you need. I experience severe finger and leg pain when I drink alcohol, though the finger pain feels as though it is in the bones, and the leg pain does not. I really need an answer as to why this is happening. If it is some type of indicator of something more malignant than simple inflammation from alcohol, I need to know. And it certainly feels like that. Does anyone have an answer?

I have experienced this problem for many years. Every time I drink any amount of alcohol from beer to wine to hard alcohol my legs get a dull ache in them. It lasts for about 15 minutes then stops. I asked my Dr. He said he'd never heard of this problem so he asked another Dr. and they didn't know either. I asked my cardiologist and he said it sounds like alcohol makes my blood vessels constrict. But couldn't answer if it was dangerous or not. I have chosen not to drink at all, because the last few times I had just a few sips of alcohol the ache was not only in my legs but also in my arms which kind of scared me. I sure wish I new more of whats wrong. My daughter told me she saw a Dr. on T.V. who said if your legs ache when you drink alcohol it is a warning that has something to do with the heart, but she could'nt remember the rest.

Ok, a little bit a research and this is what I got: lactic acid. Which makes sense cause for me the ache is kind of like how it feels when you've pushed your legs too much and they start to hurt. It's not the answer for everyone on this thread whose experienced pain related to alcohol, but it answers some of our questions. Here's the cheesy article that gives some insight:

This happens to me also. Particularly in my knees. It is caused by an accumulation of Acetaldehyde in the joints. Alcohol is converted into Acetaldehyde then acetate. The Acetaldehyde is a an extremely toxic irritant of the body. If you experience this your body is not alcohol to acetate at a rapid rate. This usually occurs with heavy drinkers, however some individuals can just have an allergy to alcohol and to be more specific the Acetaldehyde.

In the liver, the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase oxidizes ethanol into acetaldehyde, which is then further oxidized into harmless acetic acid by acetaldehyde dehydrogenase. These two oxidation reactions are coupled with the reduction of NAD+ to NADH. In the brain, alcohol dehydrogenase has a minor role in the oxidation of ethanol to acetaldehyde. Instead, the enzyme catalase primarily oxidizes ethanol to acetaldehyde.

Most people of East Asian descent have a mutation in their alcohol dehydrogenase gene that makes this enzyme unusually effective at converting ethanol to acetaldehyde, and about half of such people also have a form of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase that is less effective at converting acetaldehyde to acetic acid. This combination causes them to suffer from alcohol flush reaction, in which acetaldehyde accumulates after drinking, leading to immediate and severe hangover symptoms. These people are therefore less likely to become alcoholics.

The drug disulfiram (Antabuse) prevents the oxidation of acetaldehyde to acetic acid, and it has the same unpleasant effect on drinkers. Antabuse is used as a deterrent for alcoholics who wish to stay sober.

That is exactly how I would describe mine. I am 21, female and after one drink I have pain that I have always associated with "growing pains" but bone pain would could also describe it. An ache and it is mostly in my legs, but I can feel it everywhere. It normally just occurs while I'm drinking and goes away after I sleep. Ahh, it is so painful and distracting. I hardly ever drink so I don't see how my liver could be the problem.

I am a 34 year old female.. Sometimes after I've had some drinks I experience hip pains the following day.. It feels like it's a deep bone pain.. I have been searching the net to try find out what it could be.. Please search for avascular necrosis.. It doesn't always occur in the hip, but the hip is the most common area for it to start. It can get so serious that hip replacement may be required. I hope this helps

Yeap totally from alcohol... i don't drink all the time but... I do drink a hell of alot when i do... before you go to bed drink 2 big glasses of water with some ibuprofen not only will it stop you from having your typical hangover headache swollen head... it will stop the bone pain... which is rather excruciating as I'm up at 5:45 AM googling bone pain trying to figure out why earlier today my left leg femur was killing me... and now my right elbow to bicep alll the way up to my shoulder has this same aching pain..  I've always just assumed it was the alcohol until I found allllll these similar posts... Nice to know im not dieing or something.

Should have done the routine of water and ibuprofen just forgot!!

I get this too, especially when I was in college and after a heavy night of partying I would have bad pain in my ankle joints that shot up my lower leg.  Did anyone get a good doctors answer as to what causes this? I would love to know... reply if so. thanks!!

Alcohol dehydrated you, that'by why you get pain in the arm and legs. just drink more water and a gatoraid before and after drinking and most of you will be fine. Works everytime for me and I'm a healthy 21 year old.

Ooouuucch! Definitely drank a lot more than usual last night and woke up entirely too early because of the pain. It is in my hips more than anything. I am worried because I did fall down last night. Ha! Bruise on my butt. I am hoping it's not from the fall though.. Anyway, I can kind of feel it in my lower back and knees too, so I am assuming it's from the alcohol.. Can this really last up to 24 hours? and HOW DO YOU MAKE IT GO AWAY?

I have a similar problem. It occurs after a night of heavy binge drinking, usually hard liquor. I get a dull aching pain in my bones, but only in my legs. It helps to get up and walk about, but I have this other symptom which results in my body locking up. It usually starts in the legs, but when I straighten my legs out they lock up. This wouldn't be such a problem if I didn't live on the 3rd floor. My arms are usually the next to go, they lock up at a ninety degree angle. After these goes my spine; if I hunch over to tie my shoe or something, it locks up. These are just the main problems I have related to a hangover, I have many more, but I feel like I'd be splitting hairs. Please Help!
