If you get diarrhea from whey protein, you are most probably lactose intolerant. Whey has very high amounts of lactose, more than you normally consume (more than cheese, milk, pizza, etc.). If you are lactose intolerant, your body will not be able to break down this extremely concentrated dose of lactose, and bacteria in your colon work on it to give you diarrhea and gas.
I get the same reaction from Isowhey powder and soymilk, within 20 minutes I have really bad diarrhea. Isowhey is lactose and gluten free, so what else might I be reacting to????
you need to get soy powder, low in lactose and is from a different source. It has higher quality amino acids in than powders like why protein. However, there are downsides, although it is cheaper, it tastes terrible and the protein content per scoop is half the amount, there it ends up being expensive. Alternativley, you can buy high street brands without lactose that cost a futune. e.g Pure Whey Protein.
Whenever I try to use Whey Protien shakes it comes out as it went in - liquid and with cramps and gas. I also thought I was the only one with that reaction.
I've tried the Beachbody Whey - have the same awful results that you all are talking about here. I think I just lost all the liquid in my body.
Same here... I don't know what should I do..thank God that I bought just 2 Lb. to try the taste. and the taste was good, but now this f.. gases and diarrhea. Probably I am gonna switch to soy proteins and see will be the same problem.
hi i also wonder about the protein shakes. my massage therapist always complained about my legs, but i never knew what is her problem with my legs.
now i'm taking 100% gold standard whey protein since 10 days or so, and i start to feel terrible pain in my knees and lower legs and feet. i wonder why .... so i see two answers
1. only now i start to feel my legs. the protein helps me with getting to feel my body better, and finally i start to understand the meaning of what my massage therapist always tried to tell me.
2. the local pain is due to some ingredient. but this would be very strange, why the legs, and not the stomach, or pancreas, like for you folks?
also one has to be aware, that if you build up muscles, your nerves and vessels have less space, also the organs have less space and are squeezed in, thus more likely to stop working, which, of course, will sooner or later lead to problems or even death.

EXACT same problem with me recently been to the doc as the problem continued for a long time (3 months after) almost like stomach became SUPER sensitive to ALL dairy products, Doc thinks its HPlyori and breath test confirms but i had the these problems before i went on my sashimi binge. But not before using protein suppliments tolarance was good for the first 4-5 months then the problems started.
Symptoms are almost gone now but just the other day i picked up a RTD (muscle milk) on my way home from the gym all seemed good till i pulled into the drive way and i couldnt get into the bathroom fast enough...not cool NEVER EVER wasting my money on suppliments again.

Hey guys,
If you're having trouble digesting your protein shakes, you may want to check what your protein powder is sweetened with. If it's sweetened with sucralose, this may describe your stomach pains and loose bowels. Most artificial sweeteners will do a number on your stomach and intestines, you may want to try an unsweetened powder to see if this may be your problem. Just a suggestion!

Protein Shakes should not cause any changes in your bowel movements. If the shakes contain too much sugar, loose stools could be a side effect.
Same thing happened to me. I bought a very expensive whey protein, namely, mass muscles XXX, which caused liquid poop for the first few days but then that stopped and now I'm pooping unusually yellow. I'm really worried if its going to harm me? I'm really new to bodybuilding and muscle gaining so guys help me out.
if you don't have the bubble butt, it's not working. you're supposed to get those, it's the choice you make.. you eat solid protein, like eggs fish or meat, then you'll have solid waste, if you drink your protein... enough said,
and btw, diarrhea often happens because of dehydration. try to hydrate yourself while the bowel movements start acting up

Hey Guys! There can be a number of different problems when taking Whey, Iso or any kind of protein. First of all what is your total protein consumption? Over-protein diets exist guys and they can be somewhat dangerous. I'm awed by the fact that some of you have taken enough to actually get blood in stool and abdominal pains.
Although i'd advise all of you to see a certified nutritionist if you're having really bad problems, most of you guys are just either dehydrated and/or overburdening or killing the benign bacteria in your stomach by over-protein diets and/or eating a lot. Let me explain, in our stomachs there are bacteria that help us digest lots of foods. When we eat a lot they get overburden and can't handle the food, causing loose stool, constipation etc... Now a high protein diet will cause gas and a little discomfort naturally because of the way it's digested, but you can handle that with drinking a lot of water (and i mean a lot, 4 times or more what you normally drink), eating lots of fibers (Salads, whole wheat, Metamucil etc.) and yogurt, yes Whole Unsweetened yogurt (I personally like mixing this kind of yogurt which is quite bland and not tasty at all, with unsweetened natural jam, really good for breakfast) for probiotics, or buying probiotic helpers, or just eating probiotic rich foods (google it).
The reason i'd advise to see a nutritionist is too find out what your problem is, as these can vary a lot based on each person and diet. But basically most people suffer from protein shakes by dehydration, lack of fibers and probiotics. Remember, when you're on a hypertrophy diet you're eating a ton. Every time you eat you use water for digestion, now add that to a ton of protein you're putting in, NOW add that to the fact that you're working out and/or running and losing lots of fluids, dehydration is almost inevitable! Unless you drink the proper amount of water.
The basic rule of protein is you should take about 0.8-2 gm of protein per KG (i don't know what that is in pounds and ounces). 2gm per kg being almost an over-protein. Over-protein side effects can be really sever depending on the amount. Bone mass loss, liver damage, kidney damage, the list is big. So be careful when using protein, it can either be your friend or your worst enemy.
Be Safe,
Nolan
I had the same problem myself. try plant protien, i have never had that problem with the plant protien ( tastes good, and is a lot easier on the stomach) mixes great with almond milk/water! good luck
