Hi. I recently had bunion surgery about 4 weeks ago on June 8th. I thought it was odd that when they revealed my bandages it didn't look like my toe was straight. I was told that the swelling would go down and that they dont want my foot completely straight. Which was the whole point of the surgery. Now 4 weeks later my big toe is leaning towards my other toe and it now looks like I have a smaller bunion instead of it being fixed. I wear a bunion splint but it is very uncomfortable because I feel like it cuts off my circulation. I am now trying the taping methods but I have Dr's appointment next week and I am going to ask why is this happening.

Looking at the latest post, I find the same thing. I had a bunionectomy of my left foot nearly three months ago. To me, it looks as if all I have gained is a marginally smaller bunion! I can't complain about the op itself, though I am not sure what they did! I was also told when the stitches were taken, out "Don't worry, it will be OK. The swelling will go down and the toe will straighten." When!!! I can's see I have gained any benfit. I STILL won't be able to find shoes to fit (I'm not talking hish fashion, ANY shoe). I can's say how dissapointed I am. My follow up appt with the surgoen has been delayed so much that when I see him on the 9th September, I will be 7 weeks after my initial follow up appt should have been. I had the op 20th June. I wonder what he will say!

Hi, My big toe is also leaning to the second toe and I was told that when the swelling will go down my big toe will be straight. I want to know if it is true. I had my surgery on July 22. Now, after 9 weeks, there are no changes,my foot is still swollen. Thank you.

I had bunion surgery the first time in 2007 it went ok except, that I suddenly felt like I was stepping on a rock,I had developed a mortons neuroma, had two more surgeries on the same bunion and suddenly I was rushed to the emergency with a nice case of M E R S A two more surgeries just to keep from losing my foot. and here I am in constant pain 24hrs a day and nothing can be done for me and I had very respectable orthopedic surgens  the only thing I wanted from the beginning was to be able to wear a  regular shoe goes to show you

I just had bunion surgery about 3 weeks ago, I don't know if this is too early to tell or not but, my big toe seems to be swinging back to it's original position.... under the numb smaller toe next to it. (Which is one of the reasons I did it.) The first few weeks the big toe was strait as a "normal" toe could get, and after walking more and more on that foot it seemed to fall out of alignment. With the bandage and the stupid "boot" we have to use, it caused me to walk more on the outer ridge of my left foot.... Is this what caused it? Or am I just freaking out over nothing? I know the "lump" of the bunion was shaved down, but I still have that that angle where the knuckle is and the big toe constantly suffocating the one next to it. Doctor doesn't seem to think nothing of it, is he just trying to pretend that this is normal? What should I do?

I had surgery about 5 months ago. It went horrible. Mainly because I doubt the surgeon even knew what he was doing. Go to a doctor that knows exactly what he's doing and it'll go just perfectly. But remember if he doesn't put pins in your big toe, without a doubt it'll just grow right back. The first few days are extremely painful, but if you to to the RIGHT doctor you'll love the results! Which is what I plan to do when I get my left foot done after I finishing suing that doctor.

I also had a 2nd surgery to repair problems with swelling on my foot. Swelling under the ball of my foot caused me to walk off to the side of my foot plus dr had not straightened my big toe the 1st time. Turns out there was lots of scar tissue (which he cleaned out), but my foot still is not level & this hurts my ankle & it is hard to walk barefoot at all. Foot feels "lumpy" & uneven. I am sorry I ever did it. As everyone else here said, DON'T DO IT.

I had bunion surgery 11 months ago and my bunion is bigger that it was before surgery.  I went back to my doctor three times and he gave me steroid injections to take away pain and increase mobility.  The scar looks terrible and am more limited in the shoes I want to wear than before surgery.  Bunions run in my family and my mother had hers done with no complications.  I am 49 years old.  I regret having it done!  Don't go thru surgery unless you are in a lot of pain.  Mine was equally as painful as it was for cosmetic reasons.  I wish I did more research on it.  DO NOT have surgery for cosmetic reasons only.  Make sure it really hurts before you have it done.

It is over 3 months and my foot is still swelling during the day and my big toe is totally numb. I am also losing my toe nail and I don;t think there is another one growing beneath it. Same dr did my right foot which healed without a hitch. However the left foot is totally messed up and Idon't think I'll ever be able to play tennis again.

My surgery was in June of 2012. I am back in an airboot and scheduled for more surgery in 2 weeks. I had graduated to sneakers but still had issues walking and foot swelling.  It turned out my bones are not healing and both screws broke!  My dr. says this happens in 10% of the cases so I am getting a second opinion before surgery.  I am not a happy camper.

Hi there my name is Carmen and yes Bunion surgery can go bad l have just had my 3rd operation from bunion surgery to try and fix it and now l have a wrecked foot that is so horribly scarred all overand a complete foot fusion to try and fix the stuff up from two years ago. Please ask lots of questions and make sure the Surgeon is an orthopeadic ,even though my surgeon is an orthopeadic surgeon it didn'stop him from destroying my foot. Now 3 surgeries later l have chronic pain regional syndrome which makes my foot swell up like a football it goes blue and the pain is so bad l could just cut it off and there is nothing else he can do for me as he has totally made a mess of it l would have my bunion back over this anytime.

I had bunion and hammer toe surgery 01/02. The metarsal was cut in two places, 2 screws were put in and 1 staple. A pin was put in to the hammer toe. Dr ordered no weightbearing for 6 to 8 weeks. Dr took an xray and liked the results. 2 weeks after went well. After that I started getting burning and stinging, the color of the foot was red, pink, purple and white spots. I went to the dr & felt something was wrong after 3 weeks. He sent me to a pain management dr. in case it was RDS. That dr thought it may be RSD - non-committal, and prescribed Lyrica and nerve blocks. I went for a second opinion and that dr prescribed a topical nerve medication and said not to get the nerve blocks. The pain decreased with the lyrica and topical. Then I go to the dr for my 6 week checkup and he takes another xray. The STAPLE holding the bone near the big toe dislodged and the bone was displaced by 4 cm. He needed to do emergency surgery the next day and remove the staple, straighten the bone to correct and put in 2 more staples around that bone to stablize it. The Dr said that I can now use my heel with a crutch if I wanted to. It is now one week past the second surgery. I am getting burning but I can sleep. The toes and foot look so swollen, purple at times. It feels like there is a rubber band around my toe that is too tight. I am so tired of being like this and regret doing it. Don't do it unless you can not walk! I had pain but nothing like this! All my friends said it was nothing and they were glad they did it. I was the one that had complications. Know that complications are possible and that it could happen to you.

I had my right foot done with a Modified McBride bunionectomy a year ago. The results are fantastic. I am currently recuperating from having my left foot done. Can't say enough good things about having this surgery. Sooooo worth it! I didn't experience much pain--only discomfort, at the most. I had a very good, experienced podiatrist. So happy to have feet that no longer hurt!
