To anyone considering bunion removal, please shop around for a reputable doctor. I had this surgery performed 10 months ago during this time I went through 6 surgeries. During the third surgery, they removed the new plate and I contracted pseudomonas and had to wear a picc line for 3 1/2 months with home healthcare coming twice a week to draw blood and change my picc line dressing, skin graft on the top of my toe not to mention numerous trips back and forth to the doctor. I've been in a wheel chair, on a walker and a knee scooter. It seemed like every time they did surgery, it ended up worse. Finally, 3 months later I found a new doctor because I ended up with an exposed bone (chronic osteomitis). I was left with no choice but to have my left big toe amputated a month ago. I've gone through many pain killers, antibiotics and ibuprofen due to swelling. Please, if anyone is contemplating on having this surgery, do some extensive background checking on a reputable doctor. Never ever dreamed this would happen to me!!!!!!!

I am post op about 4 years and still to this day my big toe on right foot does not touch ground and sticks up and pain under it.
After first surgery there was no p.t.
I complained to Dr. that after 6 months to 1 year afterfirst surgery toe still stuck up and ball of foot under toe sore and painful.
He did another surgery to try to 'release a ligament" and then prescribed about 3 months of hard core painful p.t.
Am I stuck with this forever?

DEFINITELY FEEL YOUR PAIN!!!!
NOT SURE WHAT WENT WRONG BUT 4 YEARS LATER MY BIG TOE STILL STICKS UP IN THE AIR. I EVEN HAD A SECOND SURGERY AND 2 MONTHS OF PHYSICAL THERAPY TO TRY TO CORRECT IT. I EVEN GAVE IT A YEAR TO HEAL AFTER FIRST SURGERY BEFORE SECOND THINKING I WAS BEING IMPATIENT.

NOW PAINFUL IF ON MY FEET MORE THAN A FEW HOURS. SOMEONE COMMENTED IN AN EARLIER POST THAT IT FEELS LIKE THEY ARE WALKING ON A ROCK ALL THE TIME. GREAT ANALOGY.

I had bunion surgery 5 years ago. Worst decision I made. Week after surgery wound popped open. Back to the stretch. Battled will healing process. Discovered I had picked up staph in hospital. 3 weeks of expensive antibiotics. My big toe is shorter than my second toe. None of my toes touch the floor when I stand. Walk on the ball of my foot. Battle to find comfortable shoes. Now new shoes which I thought were extremely comfortable have rubbed against my second toe do much its formed an abscess. Do I try and have it rectified by a different surgeon.

Absolutely! I had bunion surgery along with my baby toe small bunionette. 7 months later I can't walk, my big toe does not touch the ground, my baby toe has a huge callous protecting the baby toe bone that is damaged. I went to another foot Dr just to be told that the surgery performed was horrible and I will have to have a more abrasive surgery to fix it! I would NEVER suggest bunion surgery to a sole!

i have had 4 surgeries. a double by a hack...dont get 2 done at same time...and then needed to redo them.
the next surgeon was great. perfect. i hike alot so can tell. he said he did a procedure for soccer players in europe. i walk normally on right foot.

then 2018 had left foot done by another hack. he just stuck toe on, no understanding of the alignment or angle of twist. so now i bruise my small joint bone as i walk. im looking for a reconstruction surgeon.
the 2nd hack didnt know why i had pains walking. i had to go to mechanical foot dr to get a special insole.

ask questions. ask questions of several surgeons. read dr reviews.

but my toes were crossing over. i had to do it.
