I finally gave up all meds except necessary ones. I am only taking levothryoxine, xanax & 1 neurontin at bedtime. I quit omeprazole that I've been on for years & am using generic mylanta-just about 5 swigs a day to keep my stomach under control. I bought a mouth guard to sleep in at night & I use 1 tbsp of salt to 2 liters of water & swish a few times a day. I am using only regular plain crest toothpaste. I have had relief at least livable now. I am scheduled for ent, a light ran down my throat & having my teeth cleaned every 3 months. I personally believe the mouth guard has made the biggest difference because I started noticing that I was tongue thrusting at night only to wake up with the tip of my tongue in agony. I am hopeful it goes away comopletly but I have had relief by getting rid of all the vitamins & pills. I even quit my estrogen. If I hot flash-fine, I'll stand outside but that's better than the bms. I hope this helps.

My husband is an MD-surgeon. He sent me to the neurologist about a month after trying antibiotics and pregnizone. At age 53 I am almost finished with menopause. I also have had Raynaud's Disease (white fingers) for years and had recently developed restless leg syndrome. It all added up to neurological 'crunching' (nothing serious). Anyway.....the neurologist gave me Lyrica 75mg daily. After 48 hours I was almost pain free. I can still feel tingling in the background so I know the BMS is still there.

I have always taken antidepressants. Low-dose Elevil + trazodone+wellbutrin ( a very nice cocktail if you suffer from anxiety and insomnia). Lyrica does not seem to effect that.

Sorry I forgot to add that I am still chewing the Latinex. Typically 2 tabs 3-4 times a day. I've noticed if I have a bad stomach day that my tongue gets worse/agitated. Yogurts are too filling to get enough each day & also hard on my IBS. Much easier on the gut & not having to eat yogurts all day to use the Latinex.

I've just started swishing with Tabasco twice a day and I do feel it has helped, meeting with a naturopath Dr on Thursday.  will keep you posted.  I'm not taking any anti depressants, trying to do the the natural way

I went to the dr again and she prescribed Mary's Magic Mix. It is a mixture that I swish and swallow and it is the most terrible tasting stuff! It is not a cure - all it does is make my mouth and tongue feel like I have had an overdose of novacaine. I can hardly talk for a while because of the numbness. It is not helping. Just thought I would share because I know you understand.

I have been to the doctor 3 times with no help from meds she prescribed. Have tried salt water, dry mouth sprays, peroxide, the tabasco someone recommended on this site. Sometimes I wonder if I have something that is really wrong with me that is causing the BMS. My doctor has not said anything about sending me to another doctor for this. I am glad that you have found some relief.

I also use a numbing mouthwash but its pink & called magic mouthwash. Its a mix of lidocaine & something else. When it gets real bad in the day I will numb but I always numb at night. I'm using a mouth guard at night. Finally adjusted to it & I think it keeps my tongue from thrusting against my teeth which helps too. Do you have stomach problems?

Unlike most of you I am a male with BMS.  Started about 6 months ago after periodontal surgery and a molar extraction.  Went to a specialist at Nova University Dental School in Ft Lauderdale and his "prescription" has helped b ut I still have BMS.  On a scale of 1 -10, when I went to this doctor I was an 8.  Now I'm a five.  Here's what I do:

- Brush my teeth with baking soda after every meal.  After brushing I take a spoon full of water and 5 drops of hot sauce and swish for about 30-50 seconds.

- Take Gabapentin, three 100 mg pills three times a day ( 9 pills a day )

- Take Clonazepam .5 mg and melt on my tongue and swish three times a day

-wear a mouth guard on my lower teeth at night

My condition has improved.  Hopefully this helps someone.

Did the peridontal have a reason for the onset after the extraction?

Periodontal was December 2011. Extraction was June 2012. BMS started really bad after the extraction.

My doctor does not think that the dental work is related to BMS, I dissagree

I've often wondered if mine wasn't caused from the after effects of chemo.  While doing chemo my tongue felt like carpet and it was hard to taste things.  I fished chemo in Sept 2011 and then the BMS started in July 2012  but it took until then for my neuropathy to go away in my feet, once it was gone the BMS pretty much started.  Kind of like a nerve chain reaction

Your post is interesting. I had thyroid cancer in 04 & treated with surgery & radioactive iodine. I began with burnin g feet & had noticed that my feet stopped but my tongue started.my endo doesn't think the tongue has anything to do with the treatments-after reading your post I am doubtful.
