This symptom could be gout, or a pre-gout syndrome. Alcohol aggravates gout by increasing purines in the blood. I have noticed the same problem. People who work out a lot may be more sensitive to this, perhaps because they lead a healthy life the rest of the time and too much alcohol is a shock to their systems, or because they are in better touch with their bodies and notice even subtle changes.
AI was curios about this too. After heavy drinking my as****e tends to be sore with a little fluid leakage.
there are three possible issues to consider, all have to do with allergies:
1. Wheat allergies
2. celiac disease
3. Histamine intolerance
look for other symptons including, rash, headache, stomach ache,
Getting worried about drinking half bottle of wine if not more most nights to knock out aching back and shoulders and when googling see these posts. Seems drinking the wine in the first place is the cause. Wake at 2 most nights ridden with aches and pains and awake til 5 or 6 before half hour sleep and time to get up! Long day at work and I crave the wine again! What a vicious circle! Got fortnight off work. Booked gym for fortnight. Determined to go of an evening and NOT drink. Need to see what difference it makes. Will let you know...
It happens exactly the same to me. Pain on knees and Achilles tendon. I will try to reduce alcohol drinking.
I have had chronic knee pain over the last several years. I also am basically an alcoholic. I have not had any thing to drink other than a few beers in the last 2 months due to stomach problems. I have just noticed that in the last week or so that I have only had very mild pain in my knees and other joints. So my answer is........Yes alcohol does cause joint pain. I am also 62 yrs. old.
i was suffering from the knee pain due to alcohol drinking since last 1 year , i left the habit and start hitting the gymnasium , i would be recovering from the same month and slowly slowly my pain was gone in three month , i am fit ever , i am cool ever ,,, so leave the alcohol as soon as possible .....
I tend to drink while I am working around the house, so I am moving as much as one can while drinking. Doesn't help. I get the swollen knees complete with sharp pain.
In addition to my knees aching, my tendons feel like they are tight as hell. The entire knee area feels like some kind of fluid has been injected.
Mr. Junior. I began getting the knee pain suddenly at age 48. Took me a few months to figure out it was the alcohol. Prior to this sudden onset of knee pain, I had absolutely no joint issues whatsoever. This is why I knew something was wrong. How could I go from healthy knees to old man knees so suddenly? What had changed? I had been drinking quite a bit over the past few months; whereas, prior to this time, I hardly ever drank. Quit drinking, and the knee problems went away.
Alcohol will cause joint pain more so in your knees. Drink more water before you go to sleep.
Brilliant. I too am a physician and suffer from severe pain post alcohol. The microbiome seems to be involved in so many of our "idiopathic diseases" as well as obesity and who knows what else. Thanks for the post.
I do believe you are correct. Since all my symptoms seem to be at the entheses ( the attachment of ligiment as it penetrates bone) and since water does seem to mitigate, I think it makes clinical and physiologic sense along with the fact that many people post that water seems to be the answer.
I get an intense ache in my right shoulder every time after I drink now these days. Never had surgery on it so can only put it down to drinking the night before. 4 panados have done no good. I had 3 beers and 1 gls of wine last night. I know it seems much but I dont drink often.
Hi kk8675309, this is exactly what I'm suffering with. I only drink red wine, not every night and never more than 2 glasses but have found over the past few months that every time I have a drink I wake up the next morning with terrible joint pain in my hands. I did read years ago that certain red wines have a chemical that can cause pain for some people and that you should avoid them if affected. I've come on here tonight to see if I can find the name of it. At the time I did actually find it listed on the label of a couple of bottles and was quite surprised that it sounded genuine but I didn't suffer with this then and have forgotten what it was. I'll keep searching and re-post if I find it. Better to avoid the bad ones than give it up all together eh? :-)
