Well written, Charlie. I have been mystified about my joint pain(s) as well. I had started doubting my jaunts with red wine as a potential culprit; it does sound like I need to stop. Much appreciate your detailed write-up.

Been drinking for 32 years...now 47.... im lucky cause my old man drank for 50 years and still had a titanium laced liver.....but he got nerve damage...and im getting gout and muscle degredation now also psoriasis(flackey skin on kness and elbows tiny bit)....uric acid in beer will form crystals between your toes over time...your senses are completely dulled down...acid reflux and peptic ulcers are common...throwing up blood or black stools (cirrhosis)is a massive danger sign..seek help immediately...i dont like doctors or the garbage they presribe... im a kindred spirit..and here are my experiments that work....first for gout...100%cherry juice amd rosehip tea...abstain from drinking 3 months...youll clear it...but you drink again 1 year window period it will return...my ankle swells up knee too...takes me a week to recover..cut back to 1 day a week drinking...mix your wine with water...truth is you got to stop...just say NO...alchohol is the second biggest killer in the world(sugar first)....dont let it make you a new statistic!!!

I'm only 20 and I had this happen today. I have many shots of whiskey and a few beers and now my shoulder is on fire. I broke my collar bone back in high school so I have some problems with it already but it hurt so much. I couldn't sleep I just rolled back and forth in pain. My left knee and my ankles also experienced some discomfort but nothing like my shoulders.

That's very interesting, as I am terrible for drinking water. Even on a good I would say I drink 5 glasses. I drink 1 tea, 2 coffees and sometimes wine at dinner. I have been diagnosed with Seronegative Rheumatoid Arthritis. The inflammation has been on and off the past 3 yrs. The last yr has been consistent and unbearable. I am on a large cocktail of drugs that I don't like to take. They make me feel tired and sick all the time. I know I should drink more water. Now I've read this I will.
Thanks for the info.

Hi all - I am a problem drinker - I have to quit - I also have hip pain only when walking and if I move it a certain way - it's on the right side. I been drinking and amoking a good two years. I didn't do both for over 10 years. I'm hoping it is just bursitis. I have to quit both - I also have pain stiffness on right side of neck.

Nice story Charlie, having similar issues myself. Might give up the booze for a few weeks and see how things go.

So reassuring to read that I'm not the only one suffering from joint pain after drinking alcohol-although in my case the culprit is red wine. For years I suffered from painful knees, shoulders, wrists, knuckles and ankles, but fortunately the pain was restricted to one joint at a time. The pattern would be that I would have a glass of red wine, the next day I would feel the pain coming on in one joint. By the evening I would be in agony and unable to sleep and then by the end of the next day the pain would start to cease (as long as I wasn't still drinking red wine). Symptoms were usually extreme joint pain, redness and swelling around the joint. No over the counter painkillers could even touch the pain. Then I fell pregnant and gave up alcohol. No problems at all with any of my joints. Months after I gave birth, I had a celebratory drink of red wine. Next day, I was in pain again. Took me a few drinks to realise that red wine was the cause. Strangely, I can drink white wine, sherry and port without any problems. I met someone at a party and he experienced the same thing, but his nemesis was yeast. Disappointingly, I was seem by an arthritic specialist at a hospital in York (UK) and she was very sceptical that red wine caused my arthritic pain. It seems that a lot more research needs to be done linking food/drink with arthritic pain. On the plus side, as long as I keep off red wine, I no longer suffer the joint agony that I used to.

Well I just turned 21 in January and tonight was the first time I went drinking. When I got home I wasn't drunk or anything, just that my knees and elbows were really hurting. I can safely say I do not have arthritis, so I am more inclined to believe that the dehydration causes the joint pain.

I'm only 21, and only just started drinking. I have tried Googling reasons for my joint pain (mostly in my shoulders) and am pretty sure I do not have gout or other inflammation or diet-based diseases. The only time I get joint pain is when I am sleep deprived or have been drinking alcohol. Interesting that they say scientists can't exactly figure out the link but it may have something to do with dehydration.

I have searched out this board because I am having severe hip pain. I drink about 2-3 glasses of mostly red wine a day. I have had every test in the world and they can find nothing wrong with me. I am starting to realize that maybe it's the alcohol affecting my joints, tendons or ligaments. I stretch daily and it's not helping with the pain. Anti-inflammatories work but i need to take strong doses and I'm worried about their side effects. I will quit drinking and try to over hydrate to see if this is the case. I'm very glad to had read that others are suffering from pain and stiffness after drinking and I'm starting to realize that even a little wine is not good for my joints.
