Hi, my boyfreind suffers terrible pain in his hip and he does drink a fair amount, usually miller and i wondered if this may be part of the cause as the pain usually kicks in a couple of hours after a drining session.

I also experience joint pain after drinking. It does seem though, like it goes away more quickly, or is less likely to occur if I drink lots of water before and after consuming alcohol. The amount of pain I feel later that night or the next morning seems to be directly proportional to the amount of alcohol I drink (minus the effects of water).

Hi,

I ran across this message board this morning as I was researching something that happened to me yesterday. I am a very healthy and active adult female with no history of joint pain at all and I rarely drink alcohol. On Sunday night I drank 3 glasses of wine and 1 glass of Sambuca.. that was alot for me but not that much for a full-grown adult.

Monday morning I began an 8 mile walk and about 4 miles in my knees and hips started burning so intensely I could barely stand it. I was in pure agony but I forced my way through the whole walk.

My research today showed me this....

Alcohol aids in the release of histamines into the body but inhibits them from breaking down. So if you're having a bad reaction to drinking alcohol the un-broken-down histamines move in around the joints and combined with the dehydration "can" cause inflammation and swelling and some pretty intense pain.

There are other things that can happen too... but these are the main points with regard to joints and joint pain. I've got a doctors check-up next week and I'm going to ask him about this.

Cheers!

Yep, I'm yet another one who suffers from joint pain after drinking just the smallest amount. 10-20 years ago I could be drinking like a fish and wake up fresh as a daisy, now I find even after a single glass of wine my knees ache badly the whole of the following day. Drinking water doesn't seem to help.

As a teenager I played a lot of tennis and developed arthritis in both knees at 17 which forced me to stop playing - they don't cause me much problem now apart from clicking and crunching a bit, but perhaps there could be a link to joint wear and post-alcohol symptoms?

Argh me too!

I'd had a few glasses the other night and after I woke up my knees were really hurting! I'd just been dancing in heels all night, but it didn't feel like that sort of pain. I hope this doesn't happen every time I drink, because it is really frustrating and disruptive and painful!

Would moving around more during and after the consumption of alcohol help do you think?

Hi, I usually get woken up throught the night after relatively few drinks (4-5) with pain in my shoulders, I notice that it is common in Knees aswell.

Hey, wow, I thought I am the only one suffering from this wine-beer related joint pain. It seems that doctors (like me) are not aware that it exists at all. Rather, the Urban Legend goes that one can alleviate joint pain -which we all know is BS. No cure there except abstention, it seems.

Took me a while to figure out the cause relationship but it seems quite clear. As for the mechanism, there are quite a few possibilities. Alcohol and its metabolic products affect many aspects of our body and even our intestinal bacterial flora.
So it is soft drinks, fruit juices and water.
Well, I have had my share anyway!

like most of those who have replied i'm happy to see this is something other have experienced. i'm not much of a drinker and i'd begun to notice without fail that after drinking id have aching knees for most of the next day. In last night's case it couldn't have been any more than 4 beers and I was hardly intoxicated.

to add to this i've always been linking it to not only drinking but the fact that i have "double-jointed" knees. or as ive only recently learned of, "hypermobility" in some of my joints.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypermobility

so my question on top of what seems like overwhelming evidence that alcohol can cause aching joints (for some of us) is to ask if any of you are hypermobile/double-jointed and most importantly in your knees? It may not be related but its also possible some of us are experiencing more drastic pain because of it. thanks

Hey, im only 14 and i get this too after drinking, i thought it was just me! it has only just come on recently. I get it in my knees and it really hurts, always after having a drink. Is it something to do with dehydration, crystals, gout?! im not sure! anyone have any ideas what it is it would be really helpful!

after seeing all you guys saying its to do with drinking am glad in a way if this is the reason as not only is the pain unbearable at times i am a floor layer by trade so you can imagine :-( on that point i need to ask does anyone get the feeling the tendons etc are tight as hell ?

im so glad to see we're all on the same page, when i talk about my next-day joint pain/temporary arthritis to my friends or family they have no clue what im talking about

my symptons include very sore knuckles, stiff back, stiff/sore neck and shoulders, horrible pain in my knees and minor pain in other joints i.e. shoulders and wrists

they seem very much to resemble that of the flu or a bad cold, not that i get a runny nose or congestion but my body is just overrun by that generally "SICK" feeling...

PS. I have no family history of Arthritis thati know of, however i have been an avid soccer player and i assume that could be the reason my knee pain is the most intense. Also, i 'suffer' from Hypermobilithy (double jointed-ness) primarily in my hands arms shoulder and legs, which i know can cause permanent damage to your tendons and joints in some cases
.. i can help but feel that my pain and stiffness might have something to do with that %-)

i didnt really provide any answers, sorry but i felt id share my story (seeing as i once again woke up this morning with the conditions i just described to you... )

Morning-after-arthritis wtf...... >;)

I'd like to support everyone's experiences here as well--I'm currently pregnant, so not drinking at all, and I noticed almost immediately the changes in my joints and tendons. I have already ruptured one achilles tendon and have been managing the other one through massage, stretching and acupuncture. After one month of not drinking, my acupuncturist said my achilles was no longer in danger of rupture. I love wine and cocktails, and often had big dinner parties where we have several drinks. Now that I'm not doing that, I feel minimal pain, when I used to start every morning off with a limp. I play a lot of sports, and have also noticed I recover faster from them. My chiropractor and massage therapist have both commented on the inflammatory effects of alcohol. I can't understand why doctors don't get on board.
