Glad to hear this is most likely the cause of my hip, knees, ankles problem. I am a very social person, and mostly in bars. I have been drinking quite often and I feel that I'm in a perpetual state of dehydration. I have not consumed alcohol or cigarettes for several days now. And while my fingernails are suffering, my joints are feeling better with every pint of water I drink. Also, my sinuses and muscles seem to be detoxing as well. Yes... the water is boring me and is much harder to drink as much as something beer or soda flavored, but overall, my body is feeling much better. Especially the excrutiating leg pain that is subsiding.

Hi,
Alcohol is proinflammatory and will aggrevate most types of arthritis. Single joint inflammation is often due to gout or psoriatic arthritis. Get your doctor to check your uric acid and esr :-S

I'm a regular drinker(red wine) and for the last three months have had pain in my achilles tendons,wrists and elbows.I'd been giving this some thought and decided to conduct a bit of an experiment on my self-a week so far with brilliant results!

The first thing I did was to get some ice and massage it onto my right ankle wrist and elbow.This constricts the structures around the area thus forcing toxins out of the inflamed area.About five mins will do it.Dry then apply heat-I used a deep heat spray.Three times a day seems about right.The heat dilates the area allowing a fresher supply of blood and thus less toxins to cause pain and inflammation.My joints felt better straight away.

The next thing is to drink plenty of water-everyone knows you have to do this but only a few do!Alcohol really dehydrates you so you have to drink even more to counteract this.A bit of a bind but I did it anyway.Water between glasses of wine as well!All the structures around the joints need an ample supply of water to function(as well as all the other organs).

The other thing about alcohol is that it depletes all the water-soluble vitamins,especially the b and C vitamins.Smoking denatures vitamin c too so I took extra.These vits are incredibly busy and have a lot of jobs to do including keeping the musculo-skeletal system functioning properly.I also took co-enzyme CQ 10.This depletes as we age and is involved in a whole host of cell processes.The Japanese cottoned on to this years ago!Before I started all this I was taking rosehip capsules.I noticed that if I stopped taking them the pain got worse so I carried on!


obviously diet is crucial.No processed food or trans-fats (crisps etc). eat beans and puses(lots of vit b),fruit and veg-as much raw as you can bear,fish,cut down on meat and increase poultry,nuts,any thing with omega oil.

A week has passed and my ice-therapy side is completely pain-free! The non-ice side is a whole lot better-with only the odd twinge.Whoopy Doo!I'm still enjoying my wine in the evenings and the kids are all on a healthy diet kick!

I probably won't manage to keep it all going but I know what to do if the pain comes back!I hope some of you try a few of these things-especially the cold and hot which gives you results straight away.I'd be interested to hear of any results.

I thought I was the only person who suffered from knee and elbow pain after drinking. It only happens if I drink beer, wine or things like Tequilla and Sambuca so I try and stick to spirits. Does it have anything to do with Gout?

This happens to me too! I've been trying to figure it out for years and no one has been able to help me. It happens in my shoulders/elbows/wrists and it is a strong ache. Very uncomfortable. Always the day after a few drinks. At first I thought maybe I was sleeping on my shoulder in a bad way, but I'm realizing that it's always after drinking and has nothing to do with the way I sleep. Some people tell me it's dehydration, but rehydrating doesn't seem to make a difference. If anyone has a suggestion I'd love to hear it!

Hey guys, i probably can explain a few things but im not really sure is this the main disease. Joint pains that happens after consumption of alcoholic drinks especially beer is called gout. This is mainly because of the kidney does not have the capability to filter too much consumption of alcoholic drinks, as this happen the kidney releases something call the uric acid that is really dangerous depending on the level. These uric acids will eventually flow to joints like hands, knees, toes and ankle. The uric acid will crystalize joints and that is when the pain kicks in. One of the ways to get rid of the pain (probably will work) is to drink lots of water to quickly cleanse the kidney and start urinating. This will probably allow the kidney to function properly. I read an article about curing gout's disease, one of the way is to eat celery stalks twice a day to lower the uric acid levels to stop and also lower the pain in joints. Try it out, it may work. Hope this is the answer you guys are finding for.

excellent discussion. i have severe joint pain that i think is made worse by alcohol. i drink too much and know it and am trying to stop. this may be the achilles heel that makes stopping drinking happen. i have enormous shoulder pain, constant that was brought about by 15 years of competitive swimming and diving. in recent years my knees have gotten bad and i have had surgery. the tops of my feet are very painful most of the time. i think it is alcohol....but EVERY doctor i have asked has said no, that alcohol doesnt increase or cause joint pain. i think they are wrong. call me dr. aix.....but when i cut back, so does the pain.

anyone else out there not wanting to admit that alcohol can be the primary cause of all that pain....because we dont want to HAVE TO give up alcohol?

For years I have had this mysterious wrist pain that shows up every now and then. At times I can't lift a gallon of milk or even shake hands. I went to a carpal tunnel Dr thinking I just needed the operation. Then about 6 months ago I started getting this pain on the top arch part of my foot...crazy. I drink every day. I also go on these kicks were I wont drink for weeks or months. I just came off of one of those kicks and the pain is crazy, or am I. I am trying to tie the pain to anything. WTF

I was also wondering the same thing about why my knees would hurt after I drank alcohol, so I found this and I am suprised to find that it wasent just me. I looked a bit more on Google and found this article: . It talks about how the pain in the knee, possibly be associated with drinking alcohol, might be due to gout knee pain, or the gout. I have the same kind of joint pain after drinking alcohol, but this is a recent development for me.
I'm a 35 yr old female with a history of arthritis in multiple joints and degeneragtive disease in my lumbar spine.
It only takes one or two drinks, but in the morning I wake up with bad pain in my shoulders, arms, hips and back, and it takes a couple days for me to recover fully.

I have this same problem!
Excessive caffeine seems to have the same effect also.
My doctor thinks it's gout.
He says that alcohol increases the production of uric acid and hampers the renal excretion by the kidneys, thus resulting in increased levels of uric acid. Which causes acute pain and inflammation in the affected joint. Caffeine does the same thing.

I know that this is approx. 3 years after the majority of these posts were made, but I was wondering if any of you have or ended up having joint disorders? RA,OA, joint inflammation? Wine is a natural pro-inflammatoy chemical that would make joint pain/discomfort worse in people who would present with joint disorders. If you were a pre-curser patient (you do not usually have symptoms, but will end up having these disorders in the future) the alcohol could be progressing your "symptoms" into an acute stage of the disorder, even if only for a short time. Maybe this will help!

It's great to read these posts. I've had reactions to alcohol (I thought of it as an allergy which I'm told is impossible) since I was 35. I'm now 62. My original symptoms were quite different - burning in stomach and cramps after the first tiny sip of any kind of alcohol, but it only lasted a couple of minutes and I had no problems with drinking more and no problems the next day. Since there was an immediate reaction to a tiny sip, it was pretty obvious that the alcohol was responsible and that dehydration was not involved. About 10 years ago, I started getting joint or maybe tendon pain the day after I had even 1 drink (knees, hips, hands). No RA, but probably OA at this point. I've gone as long as six months without alcohol and there is a definite improvement but it takes time. There is some strange reaction to alcohol that we're all experiencing and we all know there is only one solution. Darn. The only curious research I've come across has to do with the effect of alcohol on the rare patients with a developing cancer (different types). When they drink alcohol, the rare person feels immediate pain in the affected tissue or lymph node (this can occur long before the cancer is diagnosed). Curious, but probably unrelated to our problems.

I have shoulder impingement, torn labrum and partially torn supraspinatus. Surgery in the cards. Pain much worse at night, and common knowledge that sleeping position affects shoulder pain. But I decided to stop my nighttime drink (helps me fall asleep) and pain improved. I was wondering about a connection when I found this tread. S

There is no question in my mind that alcohol has a direct detrimental effect on joint health. I am not a doctor, but doctor's don't bother to study a pathology that mostly effects homeless people without health insurance. (well, and to a lesser degree, us "functional" drinkers)

I used to have severe knee pain, which would be more pronounced the day after a binge. Eventually I suffered a ruptured patella tendon. I went on the wagon for the year that it took to rehab the knee back to the point where I could again run, play basket ball and tennis. I stayed on the wagon for health reasons for a few more years. Just recently, I began drinking again and this time, I have bilateral shoulder pain, which the radiologist who read my MRI characterized as "severe to moderate tendinosis". That was six months ago, now I am having hip joint pain as well - time to go back to club soda and ditch the vodka!

That was my personal experience. There is another observation I want to share. I used to work in a certain city where I would have to walk through a questionable neighborhood, and on a certain corner the same group of homeless guys would gather every morning to drink cheap liquor from 1/2 pint bottles. Over a period of a year, I noticed one guy transition from using a cane, to using crutches and finally he was wheelchair-bound. It then occurred to me that it seems a lot of homeless guys use canes or crutches. I really think their daily excessive booze intake just destroys their joints.

Ok, that wasn't a large study sample, but the info is free! I bet if a formal study was done, they would find a link between alcohol and joint pathology.
