I have unexplained swollen lips, they burn and hurt a lot. I also developed a red ring around the inside of my top and bottom lip, like a burn line. It disappeared after 1 day, but my lips are still really swollen and sore.
I'm sure you might be right this has never happened to me but my son and his wife have been staying with me and they love sweets so I eaten more in one week that the law should allow and I have the same thing this moring.
I had NO idea there was SO MUCH of this going on. I, too, am having the symptoms many of you describe. My bottom lip is swollen and has been for over 2 months now. I it started with a cold sore on the right corner of my mouth - a cold sore that didn't go away! The large cold sore is now gone, but constantly I have the feeling like there is a new cold sore brewing inside my lip. Daily I have the the tingling, soreness, painful and hard to smile, small sold sore eruptions come & go, but never turn into a full blown cold sore. Sores keep coming in the right cormer of my mouth/lips. Nothing seems to help it. Carbonated beverages irritate it. I have been to the Dr. She has given me 3 different typs of medication - nothing has helped. As some of you have mentioned the MSG thing - I will start watching for that. Also I plan to try the antihisitimines. Thanks for these tips. Really starting to wear on me & becoming more painful than it was at first.
Wow - I have been experiencing this. I woke up one morning and my lips felt sore and burning, they got redder through the day and salty things hurt - both the insides of the top and bottom lip were bright red - as if I had been eating a red ice lolly. I then realised that they were swollen. Burning.........I called my doctor and couldnt get to see him, I had hives 6 months ago and he said it was similar - swelling version. He said it might take a few days to go down. Well, the major burning and redness did go down within a day, but what has followed is severely chapped lips. They still feel slightly swollen which comes and goes, but the coloured part of my lips are not smooth, the bottom one gets darker and then peels. This cycle has happened a few times, it has been 2 weeks.I cant see that it fits any of the descriptions here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CheilitisThe closest is exfoliative cheilitis which it says is rare and it's not quite what I have experienced. I have no known allergies. I also have developed bletharitis in the last week and a flare of dandruff.I am extremely stressed in life right now and this could be setting off things with a weak immune system - the symptoms come and go. Or could this be candida or fungal or virus as others have suggested.I am going back to the doctor this week - no amount of lip balm works - I think it isnt a moisture thing like chapped lips, it's an inflammation from the inside that is causing the dryness and burning. Amazing how many people don't have answer to this problem - it's really uncomfortable
I have the same issues as many of you: embarrassing red rind around my mouth, cycles of extremely dry lips that then crack, peel, ooze, seem to get better then fall apart again. Finally after 2 months of trying every cream under the sun I went to a dermatologist. She said it is perioral contact dermatitis. Not sure what caused/triggered it. I was down the shore and maybe got a sunburn when it started so that might have been the trigger. A bit about me...I am a 40-year old woman, non-smoker, have fair skin, am an average weight with a so-so healthy diet, drink plenty of water but soda too, I do not take any meds other than an occasional Motrin or Alleve. The dermatologist prescribed Desonide ointment (topical corticosteroid) to be used 3x/day on lips & around mouth for 1 week. Then 2x/day for the 2nd week then stop. If I am still having issues after that she will do a "patch test" on my back to zero in on what I may be allergic to. After that, I may go on Prednisone. Also, she said to use basic toothpaste...not tartar control or whitening. She suggested Tom's Natural brand. And just use very mild soap (Dove or Cetaphil) to clean the face. In between using the Desonide, I should only use Vaseline...nothing else! I think jumping from cream to cream/ointment to ointment didn't help the situation. I'll post again in a few weeks with any updates on my condition. Hope this helps others!!
I am wondering whether my lips caught the sun - but I don't think so and I wear SPF balm, perhaps I have developed an allergy - I am going to the doctors tomorrow as it's not resolving. The only other thing that might be related for me is that I am getting facial flushing occassionally and I am thinking this is hormonal and or the start of rosacea - my whole face feels hot at times. Random associations but they might be connected, I will update too. I will also ask about low vitamin B's as I read somewhere further up this might be a factor.
I have this exact same issue and i am clueless as to what may be the issue .. It is a coincidence thet my first encounter with this random lip swelling was from eating almonds as well ..! (which i have always eaten) .. Let me know what the issue was ..
So I to am having this very same problem since July of 2013. Dry chapped, oozy, itchy, red, swolled, and peeling lips. It seems to come in waves, it almost seems to be getting better and then wake up with red swollen lips and the whole cycle starts over. It started with dry peeling lips and then a crack on one side of my mouth. Went to the doctor, was told I had angular cheilitis, and given anti-fungal. Didn't do much and went back. Told skin scraping came back with staph, put on antibiotics. They helped but the sympotoms started back up a couple of weeks later. Went back to the doctor. Now it has spead to both sides (great!). Told to put on anti-fungal and some other topical cream, helped but as soon as I stopped using came back. Went back again was told they couldn't help and sent me to dematology. 1st time I went was put on protopic and antibiotics and blown off. Helped but didnt fix. Went back and was put on stronger antibiotics, still there. Went back, set up for a normal patch test, nothing positive. Went back given 2 more types of antibiotics, nope, nothing! Going back 2 a couple of weeks for a cosmetic patch test. I am so frustrated and I feel lost. I don't even want to go into public. I am sure I forgot some stuff seeing how I have been to the Dr. a bunch of times. PLEASE help!!!!

I had really bad allergies to sucralose/Spenda. It started slowly but I started getting hives on my face and body and swollen throat. It was very scary and it took awhile to figure out what it was. Check your toothpaste. I started getting reactions after cutting all Spenda out of my food but it was in my toothpaste and getting into my body that way.
